Claim and deadly resolution

By kingsoyboy, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

My Stark opponett did a millitary challenge on me and I only had 1 character. The character was Tywin Lannister with Nymeria (Kneel Nymeria to save attached character from being killed) attached to it. He attacked with a deadly and I defended with no deadly. When it came time to pay the claim I knelt Nymeria to save Tywin lannister, then when it came time to pay for the deadly I said you can't choose a character to die twice. He said they are 2 seperate events, which makes me believe perhaps they are.

QUE STION: Is the claim and deadly 2 seperate events

First thing, Nymeria (if its the core set card) is Stark character only . So no way to put it on Tywin. Besides it's sacrilegious to put a werewolf on a Lannister! :)

About your question, you can't choose twice the same character as claim of a military challenge (so when the claim is 2 or higher) but the same character can be targeted by multiple kill effects in the same phase.

So, in your example, you resolve the claim first, choose Tywin and save him. Then the Deadly effect comes in and as Tywin was the only defender he is the only legal target for the keyword. So he dies :( These are two different things. The claim ends, then the keyword starts. So the same character can be chosen as a legal target for both effects.

Just to make sure, even if you could play Nymeria on your characters (but you cannot because of the play restriction - Stark char only) you would have to pay +2 gold to play the card out-of-House. Whenever you play card that does not match your House or is not neutral you have to pay +2 gold penalty. So playing nymeria for 4 gold would be extremely expansive. I would rather play 3x Bodyguard.

I'm betting he used Compelled by the Rock to take it from his Stark opponent, instead.

Well to play 3 Bodyguards you need 3 CS :D … But it's another discussion ;)

Also, it is worth pointing out that if you were to let that challenge go unopposed, you could choose Tywin for claim, kneel Nymeria to save him and then not have to kill anyone for deadly (since deadly requires you to kill a character who participated in the challenge).

Nymeria is "Stark character only", not "House Stark only". Can you really do that?

No. He can't do that (move it to Tywin with Compelled by the Rock). Compelled by the Rock will not let you move an attachment to an otherwise ineligible character.

I thought the discussion had already established that the attachment was "illegal" on Tywin. I was just trying to point out that Nymeria hadn't necessarily found its way onto Tywin from the Lannister player's hand or deck.

Ahhhhhhhhh, you scared me :P

Yes you are correct Ktom!! I used compelled by the rock. I was loosing to Stark 7 to 13 with only one guy remaining I was desperate and i came back for the win in 2 rounds. But now that I see Tywin would have died from the deadly and the fact that Nymeria was Stark character only, my opponent will cry for a rematch.

Thanks again for all your help on learning this game, I just wish my other friends would purchase cards also so I could play the game in its entirety.

He might not be very happy when you will explain him the rules :P

About the Stark character only, he is as "guilty" as you, maybe even more as he should know his cards better. But I made (and still make) a lot of mistakes in this gam tooe. Many things to watch for.

The way to reduce these errors is to play often of course and most of the time the same deck so you will know perfectly the cards.
