So I heard there's some new rascals in town

By Blail Blerg, in Star Wars: Armada

Okay, I can't help it. This game looks way too cool.

For all of your who have it and have tried it, how is it? What is your favorite thing about it? How does it differ from X-Wing?

If I was to go budget and wanted to play Imperial, could I pick up just a core set? Maybe one of the Wave2 SDs and a Raider expo?

The game is great, though Wave 1 will really make the game tick.

On a budget I would get a Core Set, Dice, GSD, Fighters..... hmmmm, there really is not a budget way for me. Hell, I'm getting it all! ;)

As for how is it compared to X-Wing? Well there is a lot more planning ahead that Must be made and there is a resource management element that also makes the game feel more in depth than X-Wing. Is it X-Wing? No. Is it as fast and furious as X-Wing? No. Does it have more depth and ways to command your fleet while feeling very thematic and yet easy to learn and play? YES YES YES! :D

I do like it better than X-Wing already and from those I have payed with we all agree, Armada is a fantastic game.

It focuses on planning farther ahead than X-Wing. Fighter combat is fairly simple, but in a good way. It lets them stay relevant without stealing the show from the big ships. Once wave one launches you could probably do just fine with a core set, a Victory-class, a couple Gladiators, and one or two fighter packs. Once wave two comes out I think we're pretty much all going to rush out and buy an ISD.

It's not like the ISD was in all the first trilogy or even in the very first scene of the first film that floored a whole generation and changed the way movies are made and told forever.

Yeah, thats the wave2 one right? it looks good. i want a raider though

I think you over estimate the ISD's popularity and place as a house hold name. The Raiders are known much more than an ISD.

You're making my fanboy hurt!

:P

Armada on a budget: pick either rebels or imps.

-Core (ideally selling off the 'other' side)

-1 fighter pack

rebels; 1x assault frigate

imps; one gladiator sd

This would set you back approx. € 80,- (core) plus €25-30 (AF or GSD) plus € 17,- (fighter pack)

Minus whatever ships you'd sell. (if at all)

Not too bad for a new hobby involving minatures imo.

All you 'miss' is some upgrade cards. And even those you can proxy unless at official tournaments.

(at least; I would let you. Come over to my place ;) )

At a guess; not realistic where you live?

Sorry man. :(

They are in the Netherlands...

Haha, nah I'm just saying why not pretend for just a moment they're free/cheap...

Not free, nor cheap. Realistic I said. ;)

For a miniature game not too bad though.

I have spent far, FAR more on armies (per army) in other game systems.

Even counting wave 1 and wave 2...

The Raider didn't even exist until a few months ago. The ISD is definitely far more popular. Wasn't there a huge thread here just about how big it should be in the game just a few weeks ago? People don't argue like that about something they don't love.

It was internet sarcasm. Its very hard to detect, kind of like when a women is mad at you.

Imo bear minimum is the core+fighter pack and 1 gsd

but I would highly recommend getting the victory pack as well since that will open up 3 ship lists and give a lot of flexibility,

Also I would preorder from miniatures market if your really budget ing because you can get all of that for about 120$

Yes, I was being as sarcastic as I could have been. I still remember sitting in the theatre as a young boy watching this new movie my dad Just saw hours before. It was 1977 and my dad swore he had just seen a movie that was going to define a whole generation. He was wrong though, it is still defining new generations as I am introducing it to my son to.

Are you kidding? People will argue about whether or not milk is dairy, or water is wet.

Wait, women get mad? I thought that was a myth. ;)

Me and my dad still flap our jaws about how awesome it was first seeing that star destroyer loom overhead.

the star destroyer really is a genius design, especially just accounting for its presence in the original triology

it's no surprise that it'll end up being possibly the most popular expansion out of the lot

hell, before it was even announced people from my local group where gushing about Armada just because of the Victory, which looks more than enough like an Imperial to give you that epic movie feel

it also feels like an Imperial in that you just don't ever take it head on. FFG translated that ideology beautifully, and I can't wait to see how they'll exacerbate it with the biggest, baddest star ship in popular culture ^_^

I wonder if we will ever get that super star destroyer and the Death Stars.

So, would Core, 1 GSD, 1 fighter pack be enough? (Also, I plan to grab 1 ISD and 1 Raider when they come out).

If I had to add one more would you rec 1 VSD or 1 GSD?

If my friend wanted to play Rebels off my Core Set, what would he want to get on budget.

Never?

Yep. Think so. For casual play for sure...

VSD. But I say this mainly for the cards in this expansion. They are different. ;)

(different from the core set anyhow)

I heard that someone has seen Executor SSD marked as Wave 3 presumably present at some convention recently, although it was a second-hand information from a friend's friend, so he could've either been wrong or making things up, although seeing how we can field Home One, the ultimate flagship of the Alliance, then Executor doesn't seem that much of a stretch. Oh well, still just a friend's friend's word.

We will eventually see an SSD. count on it. It is too iconic to leave out.

I'm gonna need at least 2 of those ISDs though.......

Welcome aboard! The game is awesome, and the Forum community is among the best I have found.

I agree that the way to do this game on a budget is to focus on one faction. Since you like the Raider, maybe focus on Imperials. That said, you can always fill in ships for the other faction if and when funds become available: the game looks to be considerably more affordable than a lot of other minis games.

The differences from X-Wing are many: to the above examples, I would add that it's not (quite) as nit-picky on ship positioning. While game length is similar, it feels faster. I have no objective basis for that: it just feels that way.

By the way, "Tarkin-ing" a thread is what happens when it becomes a heated debate about anything related to Super Star Destroyers... We argue about those so much around here, we must really love them!

You too DarthFish, we are serving seafood on the Home One Cruise Ship tonight and you don't want to be on the menu.

No Tarkining this thread! All those caught doing so will be sent to the Spice Mines! ;)

Slow down there...fish served on Home One? Know your audience.

"Well, I guess I'll have the calamari."

"And I'll have the insensitive *****. With a side of **** you."

And so it was, with his exposure to an irritated Mon Cal house guest whose humidifier had recently failed on a hot Nubian day, that a kind, sensitive, boy Palpatine with a naive penchant for seafood was deeply hurt and forever fated to the Dark Side...
