Like the topic says, when is the most advantageous time to use a bye? When there are lots of people or fewer people playing?
When to use bye
Could you clarify? What do you mean?
If you are talking about a Store Championship bye being used at Regionals, then you don't have a choice. If you wish to use the bye you must submit it at registration, and you get a round 1 bye.
Edit: see tournament rules here:

When you lose the first 3 rounds and they've already given out the participation prizes. Then you leave and say "Bye!"
Right. If I'm going to multiple regional tournaments, and I know how many people are going to be at each one, say 60, 80, 100 people; when should I use the bye?
I would think less players be more advantageous.
Few games means you play less and starting off with a win is an advantage
If you only have to play four games that's much better than 5
I would think
I'd use it at the one where you think the easier competition is going to be.
More players.
If fewer people show up, the value of a win decreases.
For example: 2-1 is top 4 in 8 man tournament, and no better than 26th if there's 100.
You should use it when you don't want Make it tough but when you want to say it (that you had enough)
Might sound crazy, but it ain't no lie
Use it where there'll be the most players, that way you are likely to fight other Champions; all the way, to the Finals.
And it feels particularly good winning then.

One thing no one has brought up yet is who is going to be at the multiple events. Last year Phild0 and I used ours both at the Ohio regional, and we got paired up in Round 2. It's not fun for that to happen. So this year, I know I'm going to the PA and OH regionals, and Phild0 (along with several other MI folks) will only be going to the OH one. As such, I'm going to use my bye in PA. This ensures I won't be matched up against my friends in the early rounds at either location.
