New player Question

By kalstrai, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

My gaming group seems to be diving into X-Wing so I've been browsing the shops and figuring out what I might like to play. I really like the look of the StarViper so the newer 'Scum' faction seems to be where I'm headed. The only problem I'm facing is that there doesn't seem to be a good way to 'Start from Scratch' as the Scum.

I guess my question, is there a good way to start from scratch with Scum? It appears better to collect rebel and have Scum as a second faction ... since that's what will happen anyway with collecting extra Y-wings, Hawks and headhunters.

Any thoughts?

I may just get the StarViper to put on my shelf :) To use later when my collection has improved.

Well, you'll need to purchase a Core Set (27$) to get the dice, damage deck, maneuver templates, range ruler, and asteroids.

You could technically pick up most of these second hand from people who bought multiple core sets.

Other than the fact that you won't be getting any S&V ships in the Core Ste, Scum & Villainy is as good/easy a faction to get into than any other!

You'll definitely want to pick up a copy of Most Wanted (28$) since it's the best value you'll find with the 3 ships it includes.

And it'll give you the option of picking up the Firespray, HWK-290 or Rebel Y-Wing!

Then, add in other Scum ships as you see fit! :)

In no particular order...

  • Firespray (20$) to use with the content from Most Wanted
  • HWK-290 (10$) to use with the content from Most Wanted
  • Y-Wing (10$) to use with the content from Most Wanted
  • M3-A Interceptor (10$)
  • StarViper (14$)
  • IG-2000 Aggressor (20$)

As Klutz mentions you only 'need' the Core Set for all of the miscellaneous pieces that are needed to play the game. Most can be found other places although the damage deck needs to have come from a Core Set; by the time you put all of these other sources together you're often better off just buying the Core Set to start out with.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I guess it just seems weird since best case scenario I'll be collecting rebel and scum at the same time. Most other miniature games I've played/ seen you invest in only the faction you're interested in playing.

If I'm interested in playing Scum it looks like I'll be starting out with something like this:

Core set

Most Wanted

StarViper (since it's the reason I want to play Scum)

I do know a guy who bought two core sets, I'm guessing he got them for the models / cards. I might be able to get his extra stuff off him and then just collect straight Scum with the most wanted and StarViper. Should give me lots options to start with and then expand with a rebel HWK and M3-A later. The IG-2000 looks pretty cool too!

Thanks for input and the prices, though I'm up in Canada, so you have to basically double them :S Hence my wanting to explore cost savings haha.

Thanks guys!

John.

Definitely try and buy his extra core set components off of him!

I'd imagine he'd be willing to sell you the Damage Deck, Range Ruler, Maneuver Templates and Asteroids for pretty cheap (10$ maybe?).

Then you'd just need to pick up a pack of Dice (only 8$ on greatboardgames.ca).

You can always try joining one or both of these Facebook groups and asking if anyone has extras they'd be willing to part with, I've seen extra Damage Decks posted a few times.

Hah! That's where we were looking at ordering our stuff! Great website that greatboardgames.ca

I'll definitely check out the facebook groups, I know I used swapping groups back in my MechWarrior clicks days and they're pretty slick. Although there's more reason to do it with a blind booster method. And now to email my one friend with extra things. I'll have to see what he says, Thanks again!

John!
