3 starvipers. are they viable?

By Scoundrel, in X-Wing

i have tested

guri, thrusters, predator

xizor, thusters, predator, AS

naked enforcer

I love the list and it fares very well for me, but it doesn't feel strong enough to compete 4 real. Any 3 viper builds or comments, experiences etc is welcomed! I want this to work.

imo, nope

the Starviper is an awesome fun ship, but it's not "Carry" material like a phantom.

*Its stats are very solid, but "average" (i.e, there's nothing that stands out as stupid, such as 4 dice offense and essentially 4 dice defense ala whisper)

*It's powerful, but not ridiculous. At most, you're getting Predator or FCS + focus on your 3-dice attack which forces actual choice when you decide to focus or maneuver because doing so will greatly impact your offense (unlike whisper or IG-88B, which just fart out 4-dice with fcs and gunner effects)

*It's maneuverable, but not incredibly so (not enough greens for PTL, the dial is essentially a B-wing's unleashed which makes it lovely at close quarters but not fast enough to create serious distance)

I need more games with generic enforcers to see if I like the feel of double Vipers, but so far I've been very happy running one of the characters in a list with predator + thrusters. At 35-36 points, I feel they're more than worth their place for what they bring, but any more and they start dropping off considerably.

Imo, Vipers are solid center-pieces and surprisingly difficult to kill (especially Xizor with his ability) but they're not like other super-aces or fat ships.

Four Starvipers, however...

Xizor is at his best when taking advantage of his ability. I wouldn't use him in a three Starviper list.

Guri is a great named choice for a three Viper build.

Guri+Title+Predator+Adv. Sensors+Autothrusters

2x Black Sun Enforcers+Autothrusters

This puts you at 93 points. Use the remaining points on Illicit of your choice and possible Torpedoes.

The key to this list is to use the BSEs to block often and deny actions. Guri, in this set up, is not effected by bumping either. This is an easy way to keep opponents from being able to shoot you. When it comes time to break, get the heck out of dodge and reset, unless your opponent is stressed and you can get the drop on them with an S-turn. When played well, this list will give just about anything a run for its money.

or three AT Enforcers w/LW N'dru...

It is not as forgiving and as "automatic" as a 4 B-wing list. It is far less predictable though. Want to improve your flying skills? Fly 4 Starvipers. The dice will decide a lot of the outcomes, but so will your flying.

I see starvipers as 1 or 4 as well. 2 or 3 vlper builds seem lacking, specially with even the ace at ps 9 max.

Two Vipers with three Z's is just about great!

;)

What loadout on that list?

The four vipers list. How strong is it?

20 hp behind 3 agility: slightly less survival than a 7 Tie Swarm, but more than 2 (naked) Aggressors

12 attack dice between 4 attacks: Good

Mobility modifier: Phenomenal. As PS 1 pilots, they plan in full confidence of their maneuvers, and can boost/barrel-roll for even more complicated maneuvers. Additionally, they have Segnor's Loops, rather than Koiograns, which is also a plus. Additionally, they hold all of the Short and Medium speed maneuvers along with their Barrel-Roll and Boost, so they're scary in a knife-fight. Matador turns and Segnor's Loops, beware!

Anti-mobility modifier: Medium. With 4 firing arcs, each of which is a threat, odds are fairly good you can catch the arc-dodgers. However, at PS 1, the arc-dodgers are at their most annoying.

Verdict: A good list, and absolutely terrifying in the hands of a deranged mind.

be careful with your boosts/rolls. without action efficiency, you'll be leaving your vipers on naked green dice.

Naked green dice will hold you up about as well as gravity

I want to run 4 SVs, but I'm afraid I won't like it and waste the ~$30 bucks on 2 more SVs.

I think the SV is very much like the Scum version of an E-wing. Very good (they aren't Corran good) as a centerpiece in your list, but doesn't stand well when used exclusively. The main problem is the lack of upgrades unless you take the unique title. The generics can take ATs and a Torp... not much there. I wish they would stop making 2nd level generics without EPTs. Its maddening. It doesn't help that they only have 1 shield either. There are a ton of upgrades out there that throw crits around nowadays.

I kind of think you either have to take a loaded up Guri or Xizor, or don't bother.
