Control Deck Question

By Xcalibur7369, in UFS Deck Building

In a control deck, would you rather rely on making your opponent discard cards or simply prevent them from playing them? My current hang-up is trying to decide between placing Unorthodox Training or Saikyo-Ryu into my deck. Any suggestions?

Can be both, like Void/evil Voldo

Saikyo is the better option. Picking out the one useful card is better than letting your opponent choose 3 cards that don't matter to discard. Especially if the card you could pick out is the one they are going to kill you with. I mean sure, pitching 3 will give them less blocks when your turn rolls around, but if they still have a high block in hand for your high attack, its really not going to matter. I actually run both in my deck, but if its one or the other, Saikyo is the way to go.

saikyo for sure for an control deck.

what is your character for another question

Whichever card serves your purposes better. To answer the question that you asked, its better to prevent your opponent from playing cards than to selectively discard, but only if you can do it quickly enough to change the outcome of the game. So perhaps its better for you to make a decision based on which option you can get working faster and the gains of that action over those same parameters for the other card. Also, you have to determine if your deck or play strategy has a particular weakness that one of the cards can cover for better. Generally speaking, you should want your winning strategy, kill turn, etc. to be as solid as possible. If you can gain control and live long enough to that point without either card, then choose the one that lets you wrap up your kill turn the best.

Truthfully, Unorthodox Training (as an action) is probably better used in a deck that has lots of cards in hand on the opponent's turn (ie. more often than not, an aggro deck); whereas, Saikyo-ryu is better for forcing damage. Another thing to consider is the pressure that both cards can put on your opponents to prevent them from attacking. Saikyo-ryu should be much stronger in this department because it is a threat that your opponent can clearly see, thus they will want to prepare for it when you use it. On the other hand, Unorthodox Training should matter less often in your Staging Area or potentially in your hand because your opponent is able to manage it better than they could Saikyo-ryu. Furthermore, there's the minor consideration that,as foundations, Saikyo-ryu keeps your hand hidden, but Unorthodox Training requires complete discolure. There are other considerations too such as "do you want to build more aggressively?" (Saikyo-ryu's better) or "do you need to keep your checks up?" (Unorthodox Training then). The High block on Saikyo-ryu may or may not matter for your designs at +3.

It really depends on how you control and what your win condition is. However, I'd run both and probably in less than full playsets too. If, for some reason, you must keep your deck total down, then 3 Saikyo-ryu and 2 Unorthodox Training should work as often as you need them to. Its hard to say.

For overall networth, (IMO) Saikyo-ryu's zero difficulty gives it a slight edge, more so in a deck with higher difficulty foundations.

Saikyo ryu fir sure having knowledge of your opponents hand is a huge advantage .

Im running a build off of Tri-Symbol Domination Ryu. The deck is comming along nicely but I am still looking to make tweaks. Ive only been able to play the deck twice so Ive had to try to think out scenarios in my head that I would see in play. Nobody can think of ALL the angles though.

saiko ryu. also it is always beter to stop an oponent from playing something. (thats why akuma is beter than dan)
