I was thinking of coming up with a very small portable carry case, just big enough for a single squad, maneuver templates and no more tokens than needed to play the game.
Anyone like the idea?
If you do this please share you idea with us.

There are plano cases that are popular for this sort of thing.
For a while I had each ship in a separate box. Miniature, base and pegs, dial, inserts, all relevant tokens and pilot cards in 400 (I think) count card boxes with custom foam for the fig and subdivided compartments for the components.
Made getting ready for a game very quick, but sorting and putting it away again was a real pain. It also took up a lot of space.
Thought about doing larger boxes with a squad, but that didn't save much space, had the same problems putting stuff away, and I change squads around too much for it to be practical.
I have an ESB lunchbox filled with pluck foam. The 5-straight template doesn't really fit and the range ruler doesn't fit at all, but otherwise it's great. You could solve that with a couple of magnets, if you wanted, or otherwise attach them to the outside--or just throw the long pieces separately into a backpack or bag, along with the lunchbox.
I use a Panduro storage box set I picked up at a local hobby store. The small compartments (which open seperately) hold a single small based fighter, complete with dial and all needed tokens but the pilot cards. It is modular so you can take just as much with you as needed. Remove the small compartments and you can fit two large based ships.
It's a European company by the looks of things:
Cheap too by the way, space for 12 small ships, or 4 large, or 6 and 12, plus all maneuver templates except for the range ruler for a little more than the price of a small ship.
I frequently use a Converse shoe box to transport goods and minis for my tabletop RP, that said, when I play Xwing I usually just bring everything with me because I never know beforehand what I feel like flying, and I like to lend components, as well as play with folks who don't have their own stuff.

The lunch box is cool
I use a "really useful box" 1.5L pencil box, it holds any squad I want except something with a decimator or falcon. I have some foam in there for ships, but not much. I also use another case for the tokens, and just let the range ruler and templates in the bottom of it. It also fits very nicely between mats on a table!
I just use the Core Set box if I'm taking a single squad anywhere. Even with the plastic insert it has more than enough room for up to four more ships in their plastic packaging, plus tokens, templates, asteroids, the rules etc.
I've bought a BattleFoam C4 P.A.C.K. With foam insert for an unknown game. But it works great: easiƦy stores any squad incl. Decimators/Firesprays or Small ships and dials. Also all templates etc. And even has storage for rule book/FAQ and my box for tokens
... i just use a cardboard box. granted. its not a good idea. but it works. you could minimize potential damage by protecting the minis more.
I just found a cardboard box at work that will just fit the longest templates. I'm planning on using foam core to make little spots for the ships and tokens.
One Plano box could hold the ships on stands and all the tokens you need. Maybe even the templates if you that kind where they fit.

It's easy enough to protect the minis by putting them back in the plastic packaging they came in first (assuming you've still got it)

Yeah, I bring a lot of stuff with me, haha.
I have an organizer for tokens, a small metal briefcase with templates, upgrade cards, etc inside... two deck boxes for pilot cards, and 2 Plano carriers for Rebels/ Imperials. Oh, and there's still room for the 4 large ships I've got, which I've kept in their plastic packages.
But yeah, I like being able to lend out whole squads if someone who has never played before shows up and just wants to see what it's like... so I bring EVERYTHING.

battle foam 216 bag...
I know you want a solution for a single squad, but I use a Plano 767. Holds my entire fleet (minus epic ships of course), two damage decks, two sets of templates, dials, tokens, upgrade cards, etc. It is far less bulky than my previous method of several cardboard boxes, travels well, and allows me to switch up what squad I want to play. I have all my pilot cards in an ultra pro softcover binder, so it's ridiculously easy to transport all my stuff.
If you really want just a single squad box, I second using a core set box. Get some small bits of foam to protect more delicate ships (x-wings, I'm looking at you). My problem when trying to do anything else was getting bases, tokens, dials, etc. all organized decently. Couple that with the fact that I usually supply at least templates if not whole squads to other players, the Plano just makes a ton of sense.
Edited by FatherTurinFeldherr mini case with pluck foam. Range ruler fits diagonally on top.
I made this for tournaments when I don't have the space for my entire fleet.
I use one Plano 3750 for tournaments and just bring what I need for the ships I am flying.
I found a nice wooden box (brass fittings) at Michaels for about $3 each. They are something like 4x5x3 or so (I took my 5 strait and range ruler to the store to test fit them). Then went to Home Despot and got some small "L" shaped edging for about 50 cents. Cut the edging with a razor knife on the 45 degree and glued it to the lid of the box, making a nice tray section on the top. Took off all the hardware, painted mine black, The Girls blue (like a Tardis), then reassembled them. I've been thinking of adding a felt liner. We will see.
The boxes are just large enough to fit a 5-strait inside. I also use a pill container that fits neatly inside to hold all of the tokens I will need. Plenty of room left inside for your Obstacles, cards, damage deck, dice, pen/pencil, etc. If you use the cut up 1 and 2 sections of the range ruler they also fit inside.
On top of the box I place the ships and lay the range ruler across the top (Its just large enough that 5 small bases fit side by side between the edging with room for a second row if your doing TIE Swarm; 2 large bases fit with room to spare). My girl likes to place her ship cards and upgrades on the top also. YMMV.
Small, compact, and holds everything you need to quickly go from table to table and get setup.
(Wish I could attach a picture...this stupid forum wont let me do pics or links).

It has enough room for 2x 3 ship squads and everything required to play except for the standard range ruler. I just carry it separately or I was thinking of getting the acrylic range ruler that is a range 1 and range 2 so everything can fit. I also have the larger cases to hold the rest of my collection
Not to mention it's only $4
Edited by baddogednI use a loot crate box (the bat cave one) and a small Plano 2 sided box for tokens (cardboard in one side, acrylics in the other) and a card sized "really useful box" for the cards and upgrades. Asteroids in one ziplock bag, templates in another. Ships go in FFG dice bags. range rulers go in the bottom, diagonally. One box to fit all my tournament stuff.
(I am going to look at the "Really useful box" in the 1.5 L size for fleets that use small base ships.)

I made this so I don't have lug all my ships with me every time I go to play.
This is what I've come up with so far.
I took a suggestion from this post and picked up a school box long enough for a scale (aka ruler) I intended to make a case just big enough for one squad, but then when I started sizing up the needed space I found that in order to take the range template the box had to be just under 12 inches long, so that left me with all options bigger than planned, so I just adapted my plans and came up with a case that fits 3 squads.
It aint sexy but it I holds 3 squads for a total of 9 ships 1 of which is the 2400, templates, dials, bases, tokens, dice and cards are all in a case 12 inches long.
I have a 3X3 felt in a pull string pouch I leave in my Jeep in case I need it.
If you are interested the case is cheap, $3 at office max, its a pencil case, the closure is not great but it works just find and could be improved with a little creativity.

I agree, I do like to have stuff to lend, I mostly wanted this so I could keep a few squads handy in my jeep so I could stop by the game store after work with minimal stuff to dig through so I would have a squad on hand and ready to go asap.
