Potential player still on the fence

By stayontarget, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

I am a long time minis gamer, I have played em all at one time or another, but am mostly focused on Infinity at the moment.

I have wanted to play a starfighter minis game for a long time, and since there is no Firefly or Infinity themed one on the horizon, I thought this might be fun :)

My favorite ship from the three movies (there were only three movies) was Vader's special TIE fighter. Reading around it sounds like they were not very good, but just got a big boost in a rebalance.

However, do I need the new rebalanced cards to play in a tournament? I understand they are in a pack with the $100 Star Destroyer and another card is with the new droid ship. Are they not sold separately? I can't find them anywhere. That is pretty horrible if true and really kills my interest in the game. Please someone tell me I am wrong!

This is the list I was interested in:

100 points

PILOTS

Night Beast (15)

Academy Pilot (12)

Tempest Squadron Pilot (21) x 2
TIE Advanced (21), TIE/x1 (0), Accuracy Corrector (3)

Darth Vader (31)
TIE Advanced (29), TIE/x1 (0), Swarm Tactics (2), Sensor Jammer (4)

the problem with the tie advance was that it didn't do nearly enough damage to justify its cost, which FFG believed would be handled by the missile slot but didn't realize until later how crap one-shot weapons were

the system slot and new Advance Targeting computer addresses that lack...unless you put sensor jammer on vader :P

give the poor give advanced targeting computer ("I have you now!") and take it off of Night Beast if you have to (might as well bump him down to get two obsidian squadron Ties, the gain on Vader is more than worth losing Night Beast)

To answer your question, yes, Tournaments require you to have all the cards you're using (So, If I'm running, say, Three Royal Guard Pilots with Push the Limit, I need three copies of the Royal Guard Pilot card, three copies of the Royal Guard Pilot base insert, and three copies of push the limit). This makes the Tie Advanced somewhat awkward for new players, unfortunately. That being said, not everyone needs all four copies of their Tie Advanced x/1 and Advanced Targeting Computer, so you might be able to pick it up for a few dollars online once the Raider is released.

Also, I second getting rid of Night Beast- His ability is a lot more situational than it seems (It doesn't trigger if he's stressed when he performs a green action).

Thanks for the replies. I will probably hold off until I see if I can get the title card online.

Pretty frustrating business practice IMO.

The card based upgrade system has it's advantages and disadvantages (No need to purchase big rulebooks periodically is one of the big advantages), but the raider is a rather sore spot for more than a few people. I suppose they could have done a Tie Advanced+Tie Defender Aces box, but then there'd be no ship to go with the Raider (The Tie Fighter and Tie Interceptor both already have a ton of pilots, The bomber is not terribly popular, and the phantom doesn't need more named pilots), and I think they've realized not putting a small ship with the Corellian Corvette was a mistake.

If you want to fly the TIE Advanced, fly the TIE Advanced. You don't have to assemble a competitive list to enjoy playing the game. If you feel like you really need those upgrade cards to win an event, a $100 tax really isn't the worst you could do in the competitive gaming scene. It's all about perspective, really.

I agree. Darth Vader is not terrible (even without the fix)

For example, you could run him with just Squad Leader as a support ship or you could run him with outmanoeuvre/predator and engine upgrade. That's not really a bad use of 36 points (not the 'most' competitive, perhaps, but not bad).

That's more than I would spend on the list I am actually going to use!

I understand liking a cool game but that is some serious cool-aid.

Has there been any indication that FFG is going to sell cards separately? Seems like a no brainer.

That's not a bad price compared to other miniature games. I doubt they'll sell card packs. eBay handles that demand pretty easily.

There has been every indication that they will not. Again, perspective. Have you played competitive Magic? Any other miniatures game? $100 is a drop in the bucket by comparison. If the title is important to you, spend the money. If your money is better spent elsewhere, learn to be happy with what you've got.

This is a bizarre attitude. Just because GW is terrible and overpriced does not mean every minis game is like that. You can get a solid sized force for Infinity, Malifaux, even WM/H with their new starter boxes, for around $100. Saying that amount of money is the price of admission to get a card that fixes poor design is mindblowing.

I appreciate it, as if you are indicative of the Xwing community my mind is made up.

I want nothing to do with this game.

Thanks.

Don't let one person drive you away from a very fun game. The only time you need to have the actual cards is if you're playing in a tournament situation and those can be borrowed if you know people who own them. If you're only playing casually then photocopy proxies are fine. As for finding cards online, EBay is a great source as is Team Covenant.

I've never understood this mindset. "Why do things cost money? Why can't I only spend $50 and defeat others who spent $500? <game company> is greedy and should let me do things how I want to."

The amazing thing with X-Wing is, though, you can have a tourney caliber list for $150.

Howlrunner w/Determination/Dark Curse/Backstabber/Acadamy TIE x4. Always good, only needs 2 core sets and 3 TIE expansions or 3 cores and one TIE expansion.

Don't like the Imps 'cause you're rebel scum?

Blue Squadron B W/Fire Control System x3/ Biggs w/R2-F2. One core three B-Wing expansions.

Boom, 2 lists, the rebel one is even under $100!

You can get a solid sized force for X-Wing for $100 as well, but that doesn't seem to be what you're interested in.

If anyone is driving him away, it's himself. I think what he ultimately wanted was for someone to validate his sense of entitlement, and not everyone here is going to do that.

The controversy surrounding FFG's business decisions vis–à–vis the inclusion of important upgrades with certain ships (especially those of the huge variety) is nothing new, and isn't going to be resolved here, in this particular thread. What we can say, objectively, is that X-Wing still has a lower barrier of entry than almost any other miniatures game out there. If OP is bothered by the fact that he can't get a Dodge Viper for the cost of a VW Beetle, that's just too bad. The rest of us, I think, are content simply to have a car in the first place.

since the x1 title is not yet released and you like the tie advanced. Why not try a couple of games. I'd try this list. Just show up somewhere and borrow some ships even if you have to proxy them. see how you like it. If your goal is to win tournaments then you will need to spend the money to get the most optimal list, as in any game. If you want to have fun, just fly what you like. The list I suggested can put out 20 red dice in one round. Sure it's only one round but could take out a big ship in 1 round. Tie advanced are fairly tough so getting the shots off should be doable.
