An experiment in degeneracy

By Antigoth, in UFS General Discussion

Last month (June) shortly after the SOTG post came out announcing the Mini-block format, we were sitting around league, and I asked the players about what formats they wanted to see for the July events.

One of the players sarcastically remarked "Instead of Mini-block they should have done No Block."

Another player jumped on that and said "A Legacy No Block tournament, that would be amazing." Suddenly the room filled with the sounds of "yeah, do it!"

So, with the rubber arm that I have, it was twisted, and I booked July 21 as "Legacy - No Blocks" tournament. (Of course your starting character could have a block.)

After the event, all players unanimously agreed that we have to do the format again as it was a blast.

The games were fast, and the winning deck was :.:Zangief:.: but not because of damage reduction, but because of Screw Piledriver .

We're debating on whether or not to ban it for the next time we do the tournament. (Yes, it's beatable, yes there are a number of ways to stop it, but basically the deck running it runs Ring Vets, Yoga Mastery, Roam The World, The Curse Broken, Psycho Style (etc), to commit out all the answers so it can assure that it's E goes off for the win.)

Just thought I'd float this out there for other to try.

Amusingly enough there was only 1 Tycho, 1 Lizardman (promo), and only 1 deck running Reversal.

Oh and in celebration of Zangy winning... our store owner showed us THIS

I laughed alot when I read what that enhance did.

No CP?

Dynamic Dream Team is awesome and full of win.

Ladder for UFS character now plox.

when you say "no block" you mean none of the 5 shuriken stuff?

At first i thought you meant no cards with a block on them, and thought would be epic win

I'm pretty sure he means cards w/o blocks only, and yes - it sounds like epic win.

This is what he means

I agree with tanner, that's hilarious. Sounds like mad fun tho, Blue Sky Adon, Reverse Waterfall + Shinobi, Psycho Focus...

If it's no blocking that's one thing. If there's no cards with blocks on them, I'll be packing Enigmatic Maneuvers, thanks.

And Zangy will still use Roam the World to Commit it before launching Screw Piledriver at you.

- Yes guys - It is literally Outside of starting character, no cards may have a block symbol printed on them.

Hatman - CP?

Water's really cool because Momentum's Waterfall picks reversal back up.

Yeah, I was thinking about Reversal...kinda makes those throws not guarunteed...now if only there were a way to control the present/yoga mastery that enhance...

Might just have to Start Over on those Roams. Either way, fun stuff. I've thought of doing it before, but we never got around to it...nice to see someone else did.

Criminal Past. doesn't have a block on it.

Screw pile driver needs banning in this format -(

it's an instant mill. Hence forth Zangy could just topdeck a 6 and win instantly, not to mnetion the charcater himself could be busted in THAT environment. ¬_¬ I'll have to try it out but honestly i see this environment as OP and somewhat of a slugfest :/

Cheers

Hanzo

Now that I've thought about it, I do have a deck I'd like to pit against that Zangief. Too bad I can't make it to World's or I honestly would like to see them face off.

I admit it would require a lot of luck to get past the first 'gief turn, though. :( What's a guy with that much health doing with a handsize that big anyway, lol?

Zangy himself wasn't that bad. Because amusingly enough, cards like Self Diagnosis Program become actually useable. Even with his reduction, you're still slapping him when using cards like this and Koku.

But yes - Screw Piledriver needs banning in this format. What you described is exactly why he won. He didn't try to do it first turn though. He simply waited until he could lock down all offended cards to stop the E, and then went to war.

Poor Hanzo didn't stand a chance in hell against that Gief, even without the E I would have been decimated, 20 health with these 12 damage throws being whipped at me... and my only way to block is to make a CC against the damage +2?! Not happening.

jeez. that is brutal. insta mill is busted. pretty much the only way to beat it is to kill t1-t2. simply ridicoulous.

Now go spend some time looking at 2HD and checking out the various attacks that don't have blocks.

Yesterday I was playing a foundation, eating You will not escape. Chucking Clones or Forsaken, and then continuing my foundation spamming. So killing T2 isn't all that out of the question, because it's not like most opponents can block. One of the guys was playing Ryu, and was blinding tossing Seichu Nidan Tsuki first turn, fully multipled.

The crazy thing is - while it's "degenerate" everything is on that level, and there's a pile of staple cards that people hate that have blocks.

What was interesting was - normally after an event everyone's done, and there really isn't any extra games going on. Everyone was interested in throwing down and playing more after the event.

To me that really says something.

Kinda flips a bird to Cody and to reversals for the most part (not all, Tycho/Lizardman, chars/ways that play them without blocking), but sacrifices.

If it lets me play Reversal, I'm for it!

i never said killing t1-2 in't posible. i just said that is pretty much the only way to beat the insta mill deck.

Thats awesome! I wanna try this..

6*Ryu + Condor Spirit + Kanzukiryu Kakutojutsu + Seichu = 6 Seichu's.... 8th Bill right after if you want to to make sure they'd be dead (if for some reason they played Reversal or About Face)

That's why it's a degenrate format :D
