X-Wing Squadrons

By NOPUNintendo64, in Star Wars: Armada

I believe X-Wing squadrons should've had a speed of 4.

They were faster that Y-wings but slower than A-wings.

Also if I recall correctly the X-Wing, especially the T-65 variant, could match a normal TIE fighter in speed and that's why the Empire developed the TIE Interceptor and later on the TIE Hunter.

You will probably find that it is game a balance issue. If they were faster they would also cost more.

Not with the S-Foils in attack position. ;)

Seriously though. Game balance and play trumps most obscure stats.

... Because this is a forum frequented by the kind of people who aren't familiar with such obscure facts. :)

So weeks of playtest and game design is wrong, because it isn't what you think it should be

if you want to give them speed 4, and make them cost a few points more... go right ahead. But i doubt many other people are going to join you

IIRC at GenCon they were speed 4 and TIEs were speed 5. They obviously felt they needed to scale things back a bit through play testing.

So they gave it thought, tried it out, and decided it didn't work as well.

The thing is, squadron movement is pretty granular. I mean, you effectively only have speeds 2, 3, 4, and 5 to work with. Very fast ships are 5, faster than average ships are 4, average ships are 3, slow ships are 2. And judging by the way the Bwing thread is going, 2 is VERY slow.

If its a game balance issue, then there should be at least one TIE squadron that does not fly faster than an X-Wing. Even the TIE Bombers are 33% faster. X-Wings can't even catch up on a Tie/Br. The X-Wing is not as fast as any TIE, its slower than all of them.

that isn't nearly as bad as B-wings having the same health as Xs o.O

ah well, it's a different game

I just explain it away as the relative differences in speed being too minor to differentiate on the scale of armada, ergo they're simply set at 3

I think they went for a blend of durability and dog-fighting maneuverability to determine overall survivability. If you do that, then it makes more sense; you have to shoot a B-Wing a lot more than an X-Wing for it to blow up, but it is also a lot easier to hit, so it sort of balances out.

On another note, that was a lot of "abilities" in one sentence up there...

Y-wings are not as slow as you think. They're about as fast as X-wings, just a bit more sluggish (meaning less maneuverable, not slower). B-wings, by comparison, are only about 75% as fast as an X-wing, and far less maneuverable at speed.
