Naming Obstacles

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

With obstacles now being a part of squad building how do you name your obstacles. Now with the debris clouds it is easier to name because you can make out the ship parts in the tokens. For debris clouds this is what I named them

  • Tie Fighter wreck (Big L shape)
  • Tie Interceptor wreck (big thick one)
  • Tie Bomber wreck (Big Y shape)
  • B-wing wreck (small squiggly shape one)
  • X-wing wreck (small bunny shape one- sorry can't think of a better description)
  • Hawk or Y-wing wreck (sort of F shaped small cloud)

Now as for naming the rocks so far the only one that is unique and has a name is the big one. I tried to name them from largest to smallest but of course unless someone performs the area integration to measure the exact area it is hard to tell which was larger or not. So here we go from biggest to smallest

  • The Big One (no brainier)
  • The Fat Cross (Thick 4 knobed diamond shape one)
  • Big Brothers (The 3rd largest with a single small knob)
  • The thin cross (the one that make sort of a cross with 3 or 4 asteroids pictured)
  • Small Brothers (The smaller one with what looks like a small knob)
  • The small one (the one that looks like it has a hole inside it it is the smallest one)

Now if you have better names (and pictures to go with the name) or no of a place where they are named let us know.

Not sure about the rocks, but the names I use for the debris clouds are pretty weird.

Tie bomber: the airplane

Tie fighter : the whale

the turbo laser/escape pod: walking penguin

The b wing: the terrier

The HWK: blob

The x wing: well, it's pretty clear it's just the x wing

Oh what I thought was the Y-wing is actually the Hawk. Okay still the Hawk wreck.

But debris are easy to name what about the rocks?

I had a pet rock once... now I have a pet debris field.

Whichever I pick are called; Larry, Moe. and Curly.

In Poland we call them potatoes and puzzles. ;)

I don't think that such precise distinction will be needed. If you post your squad you just need to write for example: "3 small rocks" or "2 small rocks and 1 large debris field". Small asteroids have no practical difference. As for debris fields, they have some differences, but still I think that 3 large and 3 small is sufficient distinction. (Besides, who wants to take medium one? You take either the biggest or the smallest one.)

Wrong on multiple accounts.

First, TOs will care because they have to verify you're not bringing duplicates or that you don't change them mid tournament. Second, every obstacle has a purpose, so it's a gross misunderstanding to say that you would obviously only bring one of 2 different sets of obstacles.

So does anyone have a better list of names for each of the asteroids in the core set?

A gross misunderstanding is what you read from my post. I didn't say players will choose from 2 sets. That's

ridiculous. If I build my squad at home before tournament, I choose one piece (from twelve), so I want it as small as possible or as big as possible, depends on my tactic. Repeat this for second and third piece. BTW https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/144449-updated-obstacles/#entry1527586

As for verification, I just don't believe it will be needed. Nobody will write silly names. Just like (almost) nobody counts damage deck before the game and nobody verifies that your deck has proper cards. What is the point changing one small asteroid for another small asteroid? See what I mean now?

EDIT: I've just read Paul's article and I can't believe that you misunderstood my post. All I see in that article is: "smallest/biggest/large/small/largest" adjectives. No "medium"? Interesting...

EDIT: I've just read your comment below that article. So you are TO and are afraid - don't be. There is no point of cheating as long as player write a type (Asteroid/Debris field) and size (S/L) for each of his obstacles. Or use Transmogrifier brilliant idea - have them trace the outline of all 3 of their obstacles on both their squad list sheet and their score sheet.

I think it would be nice to have designations for each obstacle token other than bigger or smaller asteroids.

Easy, you trace the shapes of your obstacles out on your list.

Fine for tournaments, but what about sharing lists online? We really need standardized handles for them.
