[ADVENTURE] Hunting down Vooz Nooxoo Una (JUST THE FACTS)

By CrunchyDemon, in Game Masters

First, thanks to mouthymerc for their work on converting these bounties to our Edge of the Empire! You've inspired me. Below is my investigation adventure for hunting down the bounty on Vooz Nooxoo Una (the Patriot).

My favorite tabletop RPG is a grimy little dystopian game from the early 90s and the UK, SLA Industries (pronounced "slay"). It's grimdark, gritty, "rated m for mature", and takes place on a fithly, gigantic metropolis where the government is absolutely corrupt. Reminds me a lot of Coruscant, actually. So I'm placing the adventure there. Did I mention that SLA Industries is gritty? Star Wars is cleaner, and EotE's rule system isn't clunky.

In SLA, the players are company operatives and they take hunter sheets (just like these bounties). Also the PCs are usually pretty morally reprehensible anti-heroes. They're usually hunting things like rival corporations, blood cults and serial killers. When well-run, these adventures are a darker reflection of the PCs . I like SLA's game world better, but we're playing EotE, so I mashed em together in this adventure.

This is intended to be a grimy investigative/assassination adventure in the places of Star Wars you'd only see on a live-action television series run by HBO after 9pm. I was going for "wierd", "grimy", and "corrupt" when I wrote this. Consequently I've taken some (mostly just fluffy) liberties with the Legends information available on the characters and locations in this adventure.

I wrote this as an open-ended investigation, basically I just took places the PCs should visit and what information they could find in each locale. Below I've posted JUST THE FACTS that they can find through investigation

DISCLAIMER: I don't expect this adventure to hit two hours' playing time. You might need to add content. Anyway, here are your facts...

Edited by CrunchyDemon

THE FACTS FROM THE "IMPERIAL QUEST GIVER" (given freely) (I'm using a Coruscant Guard officer):

  • Bounty for Vooz Nooxoo Una (means "Patriot" in Bocce), 7500c, disintegrated. Wanted for murder.
  • Particles or ashes for lab testing acceptable as proof of demise, bounty payable upon positive laboratory identification.
  • Brilliant human male botanist (39 years of age), Botanical Research division at the University of Coruscant (Main Campus, surface level of Imperial City), unwed, no children, all other personal information classified.
  • Some type of plant armor, grew it and tested it on himself, all other research activities classified.
  • Attacked and killed 3 Imperial Officers in the lower levels of Coruscant. (Lt. Rhane age 22, Lt. Flouret age 26, and Capt. Brixley age 41, all human), murders took place out back of a cantina in sublevel sector 12-T, "Lekku You" (it's closed until plot).
  • "Lekku You" cantina was last known location (closed until plot).
  • Three Stormtroopers sent to apprehend, Coruscant Guard, one returned (CC-9940, "Niner"), currently in the medical bay. Has already been questioned and debriefed.

THE FACTS FROM PROFESSOR KRAUS (Human Doctor) - UNIVERSITY OF CORUSCANT, BOTANICAL RESEARCH DIVISION

(given with encouragement, or found from Vooz Nooxoo Una's notes, the Imps did a clean sweep, but if PCs are perceptive they can find notes):

  • Prof Kraus does not know a "Vooz Nooxoo Una", he knew a Professor Vincent Moreu, who was recently terminated from his position, circumstances unknown, some sort of legal trouble, his lab is nearby but has been declared a crime scene.
  • Prof Moreu, like most Professors at the University, had a certain level of clearance to participate in and contribute to classified Imperial Military operations, they're essentially defense contractors.
  • Prof Moreu was a withdrawn, awkward, eccentric individual with a taste for super hero holo-flicks and comic books, zealously patriotic, spoke often of a "perfect" Coruscant, free of vice.
  • Prof Kraus has a key to Moreu's old office.
  • Moreu's research was done on the Vesuvague tree, a carnivorous, semi-sentient, barked tree from the planet of Ithor; bark colors ranging from dark red to pale green.
  • It has the curious predatory mechanism of being able to invade its prey's corpse post mortum and feed off its body fluids.
  • The tree can be taught language, but it is unknown to what extent.
  • Moreu had just made a breakthrough and was able to successfully engineer a material from the Vesuvague with applications in ablative combat materials.
  • No physical evidence of the wood left behind, but large, empty planting pot sits under the skylight of the lab, large enough for a small tree roughly the size of a human.

THE FACTS FROM CC-9940 "Niner" (Human Soldier) - CAPTIAL CITY GARRISON MEDICAL BAY (given with encouragment):

  • Accurate physical description of Vooz Nooxoo Una.
  • Accurate description of fighting style and weapons.
  • Accurate description of the resilience of the armor, "maybe if we'd brought flame projectors".
  • The order to apprehend came after a call about a suspicious individual from the barkeep at the cantina "Lekku You", sublevel 12-T (still closed until plot).
  • Lt. Rhane, Lt. Flouret, and Capt. Brixley were commanding officers of "The Harrier", an Imperial Customs Frigate. Just one of many Imperial Customs vessles responsible for intercepting, boarding, and performing customs inspections on light freighters arriving and departing Coruscant.
  • The Harrier has returned to duty, under new command, all other information on Coruscant customs operations is classified.

THE FACTS FROM "LEKKU YOU" (taken with extreme encouragement):

  • "Tooth" is the owner, a scummy Twi'lek male with gold teeth.
  • Its security is made up of thugs.
  • Lekku You is a sleazy strip club with a lot of secured back rooms, exclusively employs female Twi'lek.
  • Most of the female Twi'leks working here seem strung out on spice and unusually tired.
  • None of the clientele look Imperial military.
  • The girls working here have been trafficked against their will.
  • "The Harrier" allowed the slaves and spice on Coruscant, its officers were dirty and profiting.
  • Tooth is not sure what he's going to do now that his slaves and spice will stop coming, he'll probably have to shut the place down, or find a new supplier.
  • He's certain the Imperials won't do a thing.
  • The swoop gang that sells spice for him every night hasn't shown up tonight, they were supposed to be here three hours ago (just prior to opening), Tooth doesn't know where they hide out.

CATCHING VOOZ NOOXOO UNA:

You've given the PCs all the facts they need to build a plan, but it should be THEIR plan. Here are some possible ways to get to him that I could think of:

  • Bait, Una fancies himself a comic book vigilante fighting evil off the face of Coruscant, maybe the PCs bait him by playing evil and he intercepts them
  • Follow the Blood, Tooth's swoop dealers are dead or soon will be, PCs investigate where their hideout is, maybe they catch him in the act
  • Return to Scene of the Crime, Una doesn't like Lekku You (I don't like Lekku You either, we're wanted men...), maybe he'll return to it
  • Return to Where It All Began, head back to the University, PCs should have SOME difficulty breaking in, but short of the "classified areas", it shouldn't be as well guarded as a proper military base, maybe Una left something there
  • OR, (my favorite) LEAVE VOOZ NOOXOO UNA ALONE! He's doing The Lord's work! He could hunt down and pay the PCs 3500c to simply walk away and let him do his Punisher thing (if he has any reason to think of them as honorable sorts). PCs get 3500c and a badass (if dillusional and psychopathic) ninja-tree assassin ally in the lower levels of Coruscant.

Dude... This is awesome. Too bad it doesn't fit with the style of game we're playing, but.... Wow.

You've gone my route in adventure-planning, but a lot more detailed - think of a reason for the party to want to go there, come up with locales, and a handful of characters, their traits, and their secrets... Always secrets. Some discovered by the party, some left forever to the unknown.

Anyway, I'll keep this in mind for a future campaign. Maybe next time (might get a Big Game Hunter in the party, this sort of op might interest him, though I'm not sure).

My congratulations and thanks for the effort. This makes me want to dangle this bounty even more.
