Sharing pilot abilities for ship types other than IG-2000

By PaulTiberius, in X-Wing

I'm wondering about the implications of introducing a new EPT card to the game, a la the IG-2000 title, where ships can share pilot abilities. Something like this...

* Idol Worship

Once per round (or per game?), at the beginning of the Activation phase, you may select another friendly ship at Range 1. Until the end of the End phase, that ship gains your unique pilot ability.

I thought this up specifically in relation to Lt. Blount. How cool would it be to have a pair of Z's that each get guaranteed hit effects from equipped splash-damage-type munitions? On the other hand, you could end up with Corran and a wingman each getting double-taps at the same time, which could be so devastating at a key moment of the game that it's effectively broken.

Everyone wants Rogue Squadron title cards chaining abilities for X-wing pilots.

Well, I'm not a fan of the name, for starters.

And if we take what makes IG so special and give it to everyone else, there would be no point in the IGs anymore. Yes they're still a fine ship, but you''re greatly taking away from them.

I think that a rogue squadron title would be neat IF it swapped powers instead of shared them, and was limited to X-wings. This would give x-wings that little boost everyone thinks they need, but it would be highly situational.

It would make every x-wing a candidate for a Wedge Attack, or the furthest x-wing be the Biggs for a turn.

Abuse Biggs to high Hell and back.

Like you said, Corran's ability is already so broken that it makes the awful E-Wing amazing. That's the first combination I would run.

Other fun stuff is a Green with it combined with Tycho. Two Tychos!

Corran and Wedge for the win!

Corran and Wedge for the win!

No doubt. R2d2 and r5p9. Who wants to see an 86-pt EX list win some regionals?

Not a good idea. An upgrade that applies to pilot abilities could not account for the different costs of pilot abilities.

Let's say that this EPT ability to share costs 3 points. Would you buy it to get Wedge's ability? Of course. Would you buy it to get Imperial Kath's ability? Of course not.

Applying a single cost to incorporate things that have different costs is bad for balance.

rogue x wings just need plot armor (+1 hull or shield) and an extra attack die when at range one of another x -wing. limit it to x wings with a pilot skill of 3 or better.

Note that I devised it as limited use (even one-time, discard-this-card type if you wanted it as once per game), and restricted to Range 1 friendlies. So it's not the hive-mind perpetual effect of IG-2000. I deliberately did not want to completely ape the IG-2000 effect, which makes thematic sense only for an artificial intelligence.

And yeah, "Idol Worship" as a name was just a placeholder notion. However, it captures my thematic intent: which is that once in a while, a pilot is so enamored of his hero that he temporarily gains his ability through sheer confidence and enthusiasm.

I will say that I forgot to include in the OP that I intended it as working only on a Range 1 friendly with LOWER PILOT SKILL.

It would probably need to cost an action as well.

I think it would be cool to have a title that allowed X-wings to share astromech abilities. Would be a cool unique way to give them a boost and it would be thematic since Astros could link up communications.

Xwings desperately need the title so Luke can make them viable

Biggs **** is not properly worded for it though and will create untargetable ships (need to errata it to work like Escort in armada)

"Rouge squadron" title ps 4 or lower.

"Rougue squadron may use the ability of rogue leader"- 3 points

*priced so you can't run wedge or luke and three rookies.

Instead of sharing abilities I'd rather see some squad titles that allow other sorts of interaction between units, kind of along the lines:

- At the start of the Combat Phase you may spend a Focus Token to acquire a Target Lock on any ship in range 1 to 3 that is Target Locked by a friendly ship that also has this title.

- At the start of the End Phase, if you do not have a stress token, you may transfer one from another friendly ship with this title that is at range 1-2.

- If another friendly ship with this title at range 1 would be destroyed by an attack you may suffer the damage instead. If you do, assign a stress token to this ship and to the ship that would have been destroyed.

any interaction between squad mates is going to have to, first and foremost, address how easy it is to kill X-wings (Either through improving defenses or non-existent post-manuever options)

The IG-2000 title is a mechanical representation of their linked mind. Were NJO not cast into deep Legends obscurity and overwritten by the sequel trilogy I could see the StealthX Jedi Mind Meld using the same mechanic, but beyond that we're not going to see it again without good thematic backing.

Why limit squad interactions to X-Wings?

Rogue Squadron:

X-Wing and E-Wing only

1 point

When defending, you may reroll one of your own dice for each friendly ship at range 1.

Helps E-Wings more than X-Wings, doesn't do a _whole_ lot for Luke (good, he's a defensive beast already), helps get more value out of Biggs, and promotes the synergy that Rebels thrive on.

I'm costing it at 1 point, because I believe it is worth 3, and I want to help counterbalance the overcostedness of the affected units.

Think of the Epic Games where you super chain off of quad-88s...

I was thinking Tycho and Jake.
