Just checking... Game is played on a 3x6 area, right?
I wish it was the same size as an XWing table:(

It is .. see image:
I believe I've marked the setup area correctly. But there is a lot more space on the board than X wing.
And when playing at the 300pt level.. It really makes a lot of sense. Playing 300pts on 3x3 would not be very tactical.

Seems like it would be better on a 4x5 surface. That would be an extra 2 sq feet. But, a 4x5 surface would be hard to find.

Not really, most other large scale wargames are on 4x6. Though having the width be 3' helps push engagement which for a turn limited game is critical.
Edited by IndomitableI don't think it'd be better on 4x5 at all. It's just take longer to reach each other.
Don't forget FFG also planned on us using that 6" space on the table to put our cards on.

I'm not really a fan of putting cards on the play area. I don't think they intended for us to do so. They certainly were not set up like that at the demos at GenCon.

Though if you are at home you can just use a counter or fold-out table to put them on but at a LGS you will be taking up Too much space if you needed more than a 4x6 space.
Edited by BeattySorry, that is what I mean. On a 4x6 table there is a 6" empty space from the play area to the edge of the table on each side. Just like in X-Wing this is where I will have my cards, dice and other supplies so they are off the play area. If it was a 4x6 play area then you would need some other spot for your stuff.I'm not really a fan of putting cards on the play area. I don't think they intended for us to do so. Ah. My fault. I read that as 6' and assumed you meant the area outside the setup area on the ends. I bought a 4x4 piece of plywood and made it nice for X-Wing. I'm going to be heading into Home Depot today to look at options for Armada. Probably going to grab a 4x8 something and have them cut it into manageable pieces. I don't have the space for a proper gaming table, so I need something that can rest on the dining room table.

Same, also I live in an apartment but I still want to have a 4x6 top and hopefully I can get it varnished and looking nice too. I even played with the idea of having hinges and have it be a foldable table made of two 3x4. The Hinge arrangement is what I want to play with so it looks good and doesn't get in the way of game play.

My X-Wing board, while not perfect, is similar. It is a 4'x4' cut in half. The underside has a 4' piano (continuous) hinge. I used 3/4 inch plywood IIRC. It is rather heavy and difficult to handle, to be honest. Had I gone thinner, I would have needed different screws for the piano hinge as the ones that came with it were 3/4 inch long (a few just barely poke through). Then the paint and sealer I used made it slick. However, the official playmats by FFG (or any playmat) solved those problems.
For Armada, I want something not as cumbersome. Perhaps thinner wood that somehow hooks together rather than a hinge. Then the pieces can be carried separately rather than the entire surface at once, reducing weight. Making that board for X-Wing really helped me figure out what I would and wouldn't do again. I think if I engineer it right, my Armada board will be able to be downsized to double as an X-Wing board without needing to use the full thing.
For me I was thinking of having the hinges topside to use gravity to keep the boards flat since the edges will be over the dinner table's edge. I can just see someone leaning on the board and the center just lifting up. That and I don't want the hinge digging into my dinner table.
Been considering this for a couple years but haven't had the good excuss to do it. Now I think I do.

To prevent this, I have mine set up so that the hinge goes across the table (from player to player). But it is a large dining room table, its just around 38" wide which doesn't give much room for cards once you set out a 3x3 area. Anyway, there isn't much overhang to lean on because of this.
This time I'm going 4x8, cutting it into 2'x4' sections. I just need a way to fasten them together. Will probably be able to find something in the door hardware section. I plan to post pictures when I go through with it. Likely this upcoming week as I have friends coming over a week from Sunday to play.
nvm, i'm an idiot
