So Disney approaches you and asks ....

By Conandoodle, in X-Wing Off-Topic

"What Star Wars products would you like to see?"

What do you answer?

I'd ask for a live action series that focused on a new character each episode. It would show different elements of the SW universe that did not include main characters. Maybe a mechanic dealing with Black Sun crime syndicate, a jedi in training, a freight transport who through a series of events ends up running from the empire and joining the rebels, etc. The story possibilties are endless.

I think it could be fun.

I'd ask for a continuation of the EU.

EDIT: and the re-opening of SWG

I want better Star Wars video games. A high quality space sim, that can act as a throwback to the old X-Wing Alliance type stuff, with all the bells and whistles, and highly configurable skirmish type modes. Also give it multiple ways to play, like give it an "Arcade" setting that will make it feel like a user-friendly game, but then give it a "pro" setting that will make it handle more like the classics.

The other video game things I want are more like feelings. I want the ability to fly a ship - LAND it, get out of it, via climbing down a ladder, or opening up a big ramp, and being able to walk out of it. I don't want the game to LOAD inbetween. I want all of this in real time. Kind of like how vehicles work in the BATTLEFIELD universe, but with spaceships. Allow multiple crew, and allow three of us to get aboard my YT-2000, look around the inside a bit, find a seat, take off, fly to another planet, and land... all seamless. No loading. I want to be able to land anywhere I want. Like, in an open field, or at a docking platform. This could be combined into the previous type of game, so make a moderately good MMORPG that doubles as a Space Sim - almost like a Star Wars Galaxies 2.0, but less of a grind, and more of a "Fun" time.

And lastly, between kinect, and that Playstation Move thing from years ago, why have we not come up with a realistic lightsaber game yet that lets you SWING a lightsaber?

2 things.

1) A Star Wars T.V. show that follows a new Jedi through keeping order in the universe. Like cop show meets the travel channel.

2) A new video game that allows epic scale space battles with single ship piloting ability. Like Wing Commander meets Rebellions space combat.

I want a game that is Privateer meets No Man's Sky meets X-Wing/TIE Fighter.

The ability to take jobs as a smuggler or bounty hunter, wander around various dens of scum and villainy, take off and fly to any planet in the system, and capture bounties in thrilling shootouts in the cantinas and slums of the galaxy.

I want X-wing vs. Tie Fighter for Xbox. I want a game that has different missions and the different ships in each mission. You go through missions with real people online to pick ships and run the missions. Doesn't have to have a single player mode. I don't care. I want it not something that requires a PC and additional flight simulator pedals and such.

Ooh how about an open world X-wing/Tie game!

Yeaaahhh....that whole seamless thing? Not as easy to implement as you'd think. Loading screens exist for a reason...

Oh I totally understand. It is possible however. I'd even be willing to allow LIMITED loading screens - like once you get high enough in the atmosphere you LOAD into the planets orbit - and that is one large zone - the Planet and a huge area going out to it's moons and allowing for a huge space battle. Then inbetween different space areas you could "LOAD" - to simulate hyperspace.

The key, is I want to be go from being on the ground, to piloting my ship, without loading. Similar to how Battlefield handles vehicles - they are objects. This isn't exactly new. The new part is that eventually players would want to customize their ships with modifications and paint jobs - and this might become load-intensive at some point. I totally think it's doable though.

If Battlefront has this type of passenger capable ship design and huge battlefields... that might be a good example. Though it'll obviously lack the RPG elements, but it coudl still be a step in that direction.

Droid World theme park.

I want the video game license ripped away from EA before they do unto X-Wing Alliance what they did unto SimCity.

I want RomCom set in the Star Wars universe. No light sabers, no blasters, no "wars". Show me something silly and light in the world being created.

Along those lines: a Colombo-style cop drama set in the Star Wars universe. Again: no, or minimal violence. Show me a Jedi bringing peace and justice.

Also: buy Squeenix and bring some discipline to that publisher. Along the way, make Kingdom Hearts cannon.

I also want Lightsaber Nunchucks.

I'd ask them to invite the better EU authors to write their new cannon. I was raised on the EU and if HttJ is any indication then my son(20months) already tells better stories.

I need Republic Commando 2.

Also a new X-wing free flight game. Might be able to do it on a console.

I'd want a highly-realistic Star Wars starfighter sim with peripheral support for OculusRift, TrackIR, rudder pedals, and HOTAS sticks. I'd want redesigned cockpits to update them for the present day, as our tech has already outrun a lot of Star Wars in terms of user interface and avionics. I'd want multiple sensor modes, helmet-mounted displays, and concussion missiles and proton torpedoes which behaved like proper missiles. The torps should be the equivalent of BVR engagement missiles, with the concussion missiles serving as the close-in sidewinders. They should also model the A-wing's amazingly well-thought out ability to rotate its cannons up or down, by slaving the cannons to your helmet-mounted target designator, so with the A-wing you can actually look your guns onto the target at up to ninety-degrees off boresight along your lift vector. I'd also want differential throttle controls for different engines, so with all multi-engined ships, you can use asymmetric thrust to make yourself super-maneuverable. For the A-wing, this should include thrust-vectoring.

Add to that a single-player campaign mode that lets you fly Rebel or Imperial, and an open-world sandbox mode for being a bounty hunter or privateer. Then, give us multiplayer support which enables not just dogfighting, but larger-scale conflicts within systems, wherein teams can obtain objectives in individual missions which then progress and change in accordance with the results of the previous mission. This would enable online squadrons of real players to take on the role of imps and rebels in swirling dogfights which actually matter in the larger scale of the galactic civil war.

And yeah...that'd pretty much do it I think. Not too much to ask.

Edit: Oh, and no consoles.

Nightshrike, I think the game you're looking for is Star Citizen...

I haven't read Heir to the Jedi yet, but every review I've seen says it's really uneven. I had honestly expected that tightening up editorial control over the EU would be the first thing they'd do, but it seems like the same editorial policy is just like the old one.

Hopefully they'll at least manage to avoid hiring Kevin J Anderson again.

As for what products I'd like to see, like others I think a big-budget live-action TV show would be a great expansion for the franchise. I don't know if it would fly for Disney, but I'd like to see the peaceful, monastic Jedi at the height of the Old Republic represented--we've never seen them in film at all, and even in other media they're almost always just short flashbacks.

Alternately (and much more likely), I'd like to see a Scum and Villainy TV show. Joss Whedon is awfully busy these days, but the core conceit of Firefly is something that could easily be lifted wholesale from the 'Verse and set back down in Star Wars without a ripple: you have a crew of basically good but by no means law-abiding beings trying to keep their ship flying by whatever means they can. Tycho at Penny Arcade once said what I regard as a Really Smart Thing:

There was once many ways to explore this setting in videogames, as the pilots, mercenaries, and soldiers forced to live in a place where insane monks engage in perpetual religious war. It’s the better story, frankly.

It looks like Disney is branching away, at least to some degree, from Lucas' vision of Star Wars as the story of Anakin and Luke Skywalker (and Artoo, obviously). The Rogue Squadron movie is a huge, positive step, but I'd like to see them take more.

It's not that I don't like Jedi, because come on: they're space wizards with samurai swords that are made of fire . It's just that I'd like to see some other stories, too.

Nightshrike, I think the game you're looking for is Star Citizen...

It still has Vietnam-era avionics, though I won't lie that I'm super-tempted. Also, their ship design is sort of...odd I feel like. There is a reason every modern jet has a bubble canopy positioned high atop the fuselage. It gives you all-around visibility. Why people designing starfighters can't seem to figure that out I don't know.

Because it looks cool! Also, I can't speak for all of the ships, but the one I want, Origin 300i, doesn't look Vietnam era to me: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Standalone-Ships/Origin-Jumpworks-300i

Yea I want Zahn, Denning, and Allston back (but Allston's dead ;_ ;) .

The StarFury (the early model, not the Thunderbolt) had a great cockpit design, in that the pilot sits in front of the fighter, and close to the center of gravity.

The other question is: how much will a future pilot rely on their own eyeballs, anyway? Can the human eye and brain reliably estimate distance and such outside of Earth's atmosphere? If not, then a sensors-reliant pilot would be better off behind at least some armor. Being able to enclose the pilot without their needing a view would open a lot of design space.

Not that I think Star Citizen is doing that, mind. Just that someone should.

  • Action figures, (new stuff and original Kenner stuff.)

leia in slave outfit love pillow.

:D

I also want Lightsaber Nunchucks.

Some awesome ideas.

New flight sim would be fantastic. I loved the X-Wing games and a revamped version would be bliss. I can't see it working on console due to the complexity of the game and lack of options on the controller. Unless it came packaged with a flight stick and small keypad of course.

I think Crabbok and Nightshrike had some grand ideas towards a new game.

I really enjoyed Mass Effect and a gritty SW bounty hunter RPG would be fun. ME found a great balance between story and action. A greater range of weapons and customisable components would be a nice addition though.
