Squadron/Flagship ID tokens

By Guest, in Star Wars: Armada

Has anyone found a use for the squadron ID tokens? I am trying to think of reason they are included. Same goes for more than one flagship token set, in the game there are large tokens for 1 main flagship each and 4 other flagship tokens.

Considering you're only allowed one flagship, the big token sits on the ship card and one of the smaller ones fits the slot on the ship. Leaving 2 of the flagship ID tokens as superfluous.

The only justification(s) I could come up with are.

Squadron tokens are included in case someone needs another piece of information as to what fighters are theirs i.e. someone who doesn't have clue about Star wars and can't tell a Tie from an X wing.

Or somewhere down the line there is going to be a multiplayer rules set where you will need to differentiate between your sides ships and squadrons. And following on from that you'ed possible have a couple of flagships per side.

Or the other possibility, FFG needed to fill up the counter sheets with something :-)

Also wondering why we got 6 round counters instead of a dial type counter for keeping track of turns.

I am going to use a big giant D6 to keep track of the rounds. I suppose you could even combine the Initiative marker with a round marker. But those round markers cost money and it is much easier to fill up the cardboard counter sheet with things.

I used the squadron markers to mark the locations of squadrons as I moved my ships. But obviously it allows you to mark the Squadrons if you are playing with someone using the same ships to know which ones belong to one players

All that I'm able to figure out is that the squadron ID tokens are for Mirror matches.

Regarding the ID tokens, I think its to help with mirror matches when both players want to play the same faction.

The rebels had a dark and a light set for their flagship, so if both players are playing rebels, one uses the dark set, the other uses the light set. Imps are probably the same way.

Ditto for the squadrons, if its two rebel forces, the squadrons ID tokens will indicate which squadrons go with which player.

Regarding the round counters. No idea, probably 6 of one half a dozen of the other.

As I'm going to paint the fighters I hadn't considered the "who owns what" use and hadn't thought of tournament mirror matches.

So they may not be wasted after all :-)

Technically, if you're talking about the tokens versus a dial, it's "6 of one, 1 of the other."

This is from page two and page four of the tournament rules. Note that if you have a duplicate ship, it needs a token.

2. ... Players then assign flagship or ID tokens to any duplicates
of ships on the same team. If both players are fielding fleets
from the same faction, they assign ID tokens to all ships and
squadrons (see “Mirror Matches” on page 3). One player
must exclusively display the white versions of his or her ID
tokens; the other player must display only the black tokens.

------

To facilitate a mirror match, each player is required to assign flagship
or ID tokens to each of his ships and squadrons, including those with
unique names. One player must exclusively use ID tokens with white
backgrounds, and his opponent must exclusively use ID tokens with black
backgrounds. If players cannot agree upon color assignment, the winner of
a coin toss chooses the color of their ID tokens.

I hadn't read the tournament rules. Didn't think they had multi player rules yet.

That solves that :-)

I use those number tokens to keep track of which squadrons goes with each ship.
