My spouse actually played a transgender Devaronian. We got into a long debate while he was considering his Devaronian character for my AoE game about which of the female types to use. I personally like the furry ones, I just think it's neat th st they look so different from their counterparts (and it makes sense considering how different the two genders have developed culturally).
But I don't like closing the door on other players possibility (what if I get another player that wants to play the horny variety of female and I've said that Canon is they are all furry) so my hubby came up with the compromise of there being a third race of Devaronian.
It mentions somewhere, in the wiki I think, that some devaronian females, have another set of teeth or some other minor genetic abnormality (it's been a while that might not be exact, this is hitting some serious head Canon here so bear w me) and we made those culturally accepted transgender Devaronians. Basically they acted as the bridge between the females th st stayed on the planet and the men who wandered the stars.. in ancient times these ambiguously gendered Devaronians would settle disputes between the genders and have prevented one side from out right conquering the other.. maintaining a balance of sorts.
The red skinned horny females could just be those that "transitioned fully into their roll.. the technology is definitely there in the setting.
But it sounds like The Mouse has spoken, which is too bad, I like the furry versions stylistically and will likely override Mouse Canon with my head Canon.
The Mouse have gone away from the furries?
Too bad.. It would be awesome if, as suggested, different gender roles or even three genders.
As was noted earlier, the change away from Devaronian females being furry in the Essential Guide to Species already happened prior to when Disney took the reigns, and long before the canon reset occurred.
I know people like to blame Disney for this, that, and just about everything else they perceive as being "wrong" with Star Wars these days, but there's a lot of it that sits squarely at the feet of Lucasfilm well before it became a part of the House of Mouse.
The internet has taught me that just because most females might naturally be covered in hair in certain places, an absurdly large proportion will be displayed without it. Could be the same with Devaronians.

Hey, I`m all for disney taking over! It was about time someone took responsibility and got this train(wreck?) back on course! I am very grateful to the Mouse!
Was the Essential Guide to Species concidered canon?
Is it from before or after whatever this picture is from? Looks like an rpg pic:
You could also explain the furry and non-furry females as members of different ethnic groups within the Devaronian race. If you need a good character picture, you should google "female Tiefling" instead.

That pic is from WotC's Ultimate Alien Anthology, from back when they had the RPG license.
You know, this thread went in a couple directions I was not entirely expecting...
In the new cannon novel: The Weapon of the Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, Luke went to Deveron, and encountered a young female, and she was depicted as the non-fluffy hornless version.

They went with the most boring one? No fur, no horns... Weird.

How young? (For someone's head-canon, maybe the horns or fur develop as they get older.)

Wasn't blaming Disney, just pointing out from a few different sources that it is now Canon. They could have gone either way with it. There is nothing about female Devaronians, in the movies and show that received the Canon blessing from the Mouse. So they could have decided the furry was cool and ran with that.
I was just expressing my preference. I think the House of Mouse is overall doing a great job and I'm glad to see my favorite universe get some love.
Does anything that isn`t in the films, one of the series or books that are canon, need to have a canon definition? Is Disney defining if things that is between the lines or "in the shadow" is canon or not? Seems unnecessary if they are.
Edited by RodianCloneMaybe its weird and jumps around? Or, more likely, the artist had their own ideas on what Devaronians should look like
These were the two pictures I used when I asked our artists to depict an NPC for our game. (Which, alas, I can't show here
)
But I'd have imagined anyone could just house-rule them to look however they want, surely? They already have multiple versions of Aqualish because of the inconsistent way they are depicted.
Just go with whatever you want in your games. Nobody will come and kick your door down if you want furries.
Disney's 'canon' was necessary to make the new movies with a clean slate. It matters to my games as much as Lucas' did - i.e. not at all.
Arguments about canon all feel a bit like 'angels dancing on the head of a pin' to me. I'd sooner discuss Infinite Backpacks.

Good point!
Thanks for the two examples... Why they would go with the most boring version of all three, I don`t know :-/ Hope they decide that there are more than one canon version in future.. They can be clever and creative and do that, right?.. Right?... Oh yea, disney might have trouble with touching any non-traditional gender themes.. even with aliens.. Yea well.
I typically avoid canon arguments, I traditionally hold to it, but will deviate if it benefits the game. Any of my deviations haven't gotten any complaints yet.
This is just a personal pet peeve so I'm weighing in. Lucas, and now Disney, have this annoying tendency to take freaky lookin aliens, slap breasts on them, make them look a bit more human and call them "females of the species". I want my lady aliens to be just as weird as the dudes.
Like I said, it's not a serious complaint.. just annoying.

Droids I have a little bit less of an issue with, just cause they are often built by traditionally Republic races (aka human centric), so those values and perceptions get passed on as well.
There are some examples of droids being appropriately alien, The Gree I think were one. Some insectoid race has some weird ass droids if I remember right. In my games if it wasn't built with Core Worlds in mind, it gets more and more weird and alien.
I agree! Same with droids. Why do they Even need genders? It isn't just annoying, it is embarassing and portray fans and star wars writers as pubecent, little Boys or maybe just chauvinistic jerks.. sorry 'bout the mini rant..
I'm a 46 year old woman with a crush on Leia Organa.
Please don't take away my 'pretty' species or my female droids.
You have lots of exotic species already.
The easy answer is that you can make 'em look like either as your tastes prefer.

Best answer evar! I'm a male and I still have a crush on Leia, especially in the white dress from ANH. I also love Mara Jade. Make up your own species and leave the gender identity politics out of it.

I agree in general. I like my Star Wars full of hunks and babes too. As I said, this isn't a serious "Star Wars needs to change" thing. Only reason I spoke up is because of the Devaronians and relating the OP to the similar debate I had in my game. I admit I got off on a lil tangent. For the record I do not think Leia should look like The Thing from the Fantastic 4.
Hey, I love Leia and sexy aliens too! But I think it is silly when the weird and ugly aliens are given a feminine make-over and a dash of human to make a female versjon of it.. Peace
