Just have the basic box. Is the new russian "expansion" worth it?

It's totally worth it.

Worth it. You get an additional (and quite mighty) new faction so you can play with 3 players. Also you get some Token of the month stuff, new map, new miniatures etc. For me, Tannhäuser seems incomplete without Novgorod.
