Can you suffer a crit with shields still up?

By Munk888, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I've only played the entry level training wings game, with myself so far. (Super sad confession there)

Reading the rulebook now that i'm familar with more of the games advanced jargon. I do have one question at the moment: suppose you have a ship with shields and it draws a critical hit card, does that crit apply even with most of your shields remaining? To me, a crit is a hull based strike that really impacts your craft's ability to perform. However, if crits slap theough shields, i want to make sure i understand the core rules correctly. Thanks!

The only way you'd be drawing a card would be a hit from a proton bomb. Otherwise any time you suffer damage, it comes off the shields first, then once the shields have been depleted, you would draw a damage card for each uncancelled <hit>, and a faceup damage card for each uncancelled <critical> you took.

Can you take a Face-up damage card while you still have Shields? Yes.

Can you have damage cards, face up or not, on a ship that has Shields? Yes.

Can an attack that rolls an uncancelled [crit/kaboom] result in a face up card being dealt to a ship with Shields? NO!!!

When a ship "suffers" a certain kind of result it must first remove all Shield tokens before damage cards will be dealt. Only if something SPECIFICALLY instructs you to deal damage cards to a ship will it ignore shields.

Ok cool! Thanks guys. Makes sense now. During normal volleys, shields go bye bye first before the damage cards are dealt. Doi. So if an xwing had 2 shields and recieved uncancelled Hit/crit, the shields would simply be removed. Cool thanks!

Yes, do keep in mind though, that regular hits are always resolved before crits,

So an X-Wing with 1 shield who received crit-hit would suffer the hit on the shields and then suffer the crit on the hull through a face up damage card.

-edit- dur I read good

Well, on a related note, I have a question I've always wondered about, though it has never come up in a game, and i don't even know if it could. Drawing on the theoretical examples above, let's say you have a ship with one, or two, shields left and 1 hull left. If I take damage that directly hits me (ie, Proton Bomb), would my ship be destroyed even though I still had shields?

Yes. A ship is dead when it's damage cards is equal or greater than it's hull value.

So a Direct Hit via proton bomb on a phantom = insta death. It does happen, I've done it on a couple of occasions.

But if you get something like Console Fire via a proton, the extra damage (assuming it causes extra damage) would hit your shields first.

It can happen which is why ships with only 2 Hull need to be especially careful around Proton Bombs. Give an E-Wing a shield upgrade (now it has 4 shields!) and a recharging Astromech and it can still go down to a single Direct Hit getting dealt to it by a Proton Bomb. A-Wings, Phantoms, and Z-95s also need to worry about that risk.

Wait, so my console, that is inside my ship just above my knees, catches fire and then the damage has to go out of the ship and then try to return to the ship through the shields??? Maybe I need to read console fire again....

Strangely yes. Maybe it's just burning out the shield generator :)

If you happen to get a Minor Explosion turned up underneath the shields the roll from that causes the ship to 'suffer' damage which means removing a Shield.

Just another one of those amusing quirks that is X-wing.

Aye, my younger and much luckyer brother just blew up my fully loaded and healthy Corran with a proton bomb from Emon: i draw the crit and... Direct hit! Alas, my precious Corran!

I once popped an undamaged R2-D2 etahn with a proton bomb from my decimator. It was beautiful. Double so because I wasn't really aiming for him, I just wanted to kill the already damaged z-95 that was on my tail, I clipped his e-wing by happy accident.

Maybe someday we will get ordnance that has a similar effect and with directly deal cards.
