Find Luke a home

By ficklegreendice, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey guys,

So I never actually thought to put Luke Skywalker on the table ever when I got into playing this dice (ability involving green dice = stay the **** away) and it wasn't until the Stress Wing that I had to take a serious look at the viability of this core set pilot. The original stress wing (Vi/R3-A2/Eu) was Wes for his hilarious ability to piss off decimators by slapping off target-locks, but his ass kept getting one shot by bull luck. This left with me Wedge and Luke, and since Wedge isn't exactly great without dice modifications (on those turns you use engine to boost) Luke was selected as a default. Together with two tactician B-wings and a humble little proto-type, Luke won me my first store championship ^_^

So now that the phantom errata has hit and its presence has died down in my local scene, I wanted to see if I could use Luke as something other than a hard counter. I am particularly interested in seeing what he can do with Predator and R5-P9, only problem is I can't find a squadron that would fit.

I keep thinking of silly things like 3 Blue Squadron pilots :P and I'm sure they'd appreciate Luke murdering Ties for them, but it seems too one dimensional

toss in any ideas you have

I did some squad building with him and it is hard to find good pairings imo. I think three BSPs would be a good tough reliable backup for Luke. But this seemed fun too:

LUKE'S SQUAD

100 points

PILOTS

Luke Skywalker (34)
X-Wing (28), R5-P9 (3), Predator (3)

Gold Squadron Pilot (23) x 2
Y-Wing (18), BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0), Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Green Squadron Pilot (20)
A-Wing (19), Chardaan Refit (-2), Push the Limit (3)

Offers control and the awing for blocking

I ran Luke at a store champs a few eels back:

Wedge Antilles (29)

Predator (3)

R2-D2 (4)

(36)

Wes Janson (29)

Veteran Insincts (1)

R3-A2 (2)

(32)

Luke Skywalker (28)

Veteran Instincts (1)

R5-P9 (3)

(32)

He was a second punch/end-game for the list that always found himself as the last ship on the table. R5 is good because Luke's defensive rolls are already modified by his native ability. But honestly, out of the dozens and dozens of games I had with the list, XXX was super good until I started forgetting triggers and laying down the wrong maneuvers at the tournament. :(

thanks for the contributions guys

I guess the hardest part about building a rebel list for me now is that it is very difficult to find inspiring pilots that just slot into set roles after Wave 5's brown-"water" deluge of Dash and Han. About the only pilots I've gotten to use since then have been Luke (stress wing), blue squadron b-wings (naked, fcs, tactician, doesn't matter, I just love em ^_^), the Prototype Pilot (kicks the **** out of a single headhunter when looking for filler), and Jake Farrel (diet Soontir)

I was hoping to revisit the faction post-scum to see what interesting things I could break out, especially regarding different Luke builds, but I can't escape the mold :(

the biggest thing is probably that rebels lack a sure-fire high agility counter apart from boring as **** turrets and the Stress Wing (that stress'll wreck certain pilots)

I'd feel much better if they hurried the **** up and gave X-wings boost or roll, already <_<

Greetings ficklegreendice,

I just recently started using Luke (My first son was born a few weeks ago and that's what I named him) and your load out for him is pretty much what I use for him now, except I use R2-D2 instead of R5-P9. I can see merit for both though.

I won my store championship with Jake Farrell, Tarn Mison, and two Blue Squadron Pilots...but now that we are trying to both use Luke in a similar way, what about something like this?

Luke + Predator + R5-P9 - 34

Jake Farrell + Lone Wolf + Veteran Instincts + Autothrusters + Chardaan Refit - 27

Tarn Mison + R7 Astromech - 25

Bandit Squadron Pilot - 12

98 Points

Jake Flanks and engages those high agility arc dodgers with some shifty maneuvers. Luke and Tarn are tough targets to want to shoot first because of the damage mitigation...the Bandit becomes the low hanging fruit but you can move him up to block or use the time he's focused on to get some strong hits in with the X-Wings.

The last two points can be used for a flechette torpedo on Tarn, upgrading the bandit to a Tala and/or as an initiative bid to help Jake take down the slippery PS 9s. I don't like running Jake normally w/o Proton Rockets, but I had to make an exception here.

I'm on the same quest as you, and really just wanted to get some ideas flowing. Hopefully we can come up with something cool that isn't the standard stress bot setup.

cheers Deepspace,

I actually came home thinking about how to get the only two combat X-wings I personally find viable in the same list (Tarn und Luke) and basically came up with the exact same combination :P (albeit R5-P9 Luke and Outmanuever + PTL Jakes)

Only problem in that list is the lone Bandit. I've had my experiences my lone Bandits in the initial outings of Stress Luke, and they've done nothing but hold the squadrons back <_< If I could find the 2 points much needed upgrade to a Prototype Pilot, we'd be in business but they're sadly not going to fall out of the sky unless I gimp Jakes' offensive output, and then there's not much reason to take him along :(

Luke + Tarn leaving 41 points to work with has been incredibly awkward and frustrating (FCS, VI, R2-D2 Corran is 42)

I went back to just Luke and got

Luke (Predator, r5-p9)

Blue Squadron (fcs) x 2

Prototype (refit, thrusters)

[99]

which is just my stress wing list with Stress Luke swapped for Predator Luke, Tactician Bs swapped for FCS, and an auto-thrusters because what else can you bring for 17 points? (naked blount...ew)

I got kind of close satisfied with

Luke (predator, r5-p9)

Tarn (R7)

Gold Squadron (auto-blaster) x 2

[99]

but I can't get r2s for both Ys....argh!

******* rebels are hard to design lists for :(

Here's my list that went 4-0 and got top seed at store champs before I made a boneheaded move after a long day and lost right as time was called in elimination.

Luke with R3A2, EU, and VI

3 Prototypes with Refit

Green Squadron with Outmaneuver and a Refit

This is a great list, but unfortunately we are trying to look at a solid Luke build w/o the stress bot. I think he is still good w/o many phantoms out there, but when you run in to lists that don't care about stress you just have wasted points, unless you run someone like Eaden Vrill who benefits from it regardless.

Yeah fickle, 41 points is such an awkward place for points. You could fit a fat ship in there but I dislike 3 ship builds...maybe Corran Horn, R2-D2, FCS. I also feel the same way about the bandit..he is just...there. it's hard to move him up as a blocker in front of everyone because he can get blown away so quickly...it'd be better to slow roll him with everyone else and joust away. I think to unlock that point total we just have to look at getting rid of Tarn or running something like 3 bandits/talas with some upgrades (either munitions or hull/shield to taste).

Maybe:

Luke + R5-P9 + Predator - 35

Blue Squadron Pilot + FCS - 24 (or Gold + Ion Cannon Turret + R2 + Title)

Blue Squadron Pilot + FCS - 24 (or Gold + Ion Cannon Turret + R2 + Title)

Green Squadron Pilot + Chardaan Refit + Calculation - 18
