My friend has invited me to play Descent with him and several of his friends. However, it is my first time playing Descent. I am somewhat familiar with the rules and such, but I do not know which hero to select for my first play. We used to play D&D together, and I'd usually play the melee DPS (like a rogue, or melee ranger). Is there any hero in Descent that plays like melee DPS?

Any recommendations for a first-timer's hero choice?

You might try playing Grey Ker . He's some type of ranger, focused on ranged attacks, with a useful ability espacially when opening doors.

For melee

Base game: One Fist, Steelhorns or Mordrog

If he has Well of Darkness: Take Nanok over everyone else

If he happens to have Altar of Despair: Potentially take Tahlia over Nanok, since its debatabe which is better. IMHO, Tahlia is better.

If he happens to also have Tomb of Ice: Still take Nanok or Tahlia if they are availabe.

Thanks for the recommendations! He's only got the base game (he just got it himself, recently), and after looking at the characters, I think I'll try One Fist. Grey Ker is a little too ranged for me, Mordrog seems more like a tank, as does Steelhorn.

Plus, I like the hook hand, because it adds more flavor

Just remember for the hook attack, you do roll you Melee trait dice with it.
