Weird interaction of bombs and edge of the play area

By Klutz, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I was looking for something else in the FAQ today and noticed this entry on page 15:

Q: Can a bomb token be dropped outside the play area?

A: Yes. The portion of the bomb token that is outside the play area is ignored

How would you resolve this situation:

The A-Wing performs a 3 hard turn, with the template going completely off the board.

The off-board section of the template overlaps the off-board section of the proximity mine.

Does the proximity mine explode?

Well the rules just state that if your ship base or maneuver template overlap a prox you roll for damage - you've fulfilled those conditions and there aren't any additional conditions stated.

So I'd say you treat it as normal.

So, you ignore the FAQ entry I quoted?

"The portion of the bomb token that is outside the play area is ignored."

Edit: I know this probably isn't what the FAQ intended, and would definitely play it as you described.

I just thought the FAQ entry was weird and gave rise to a bizarre edge-case and felt like pointing it out. :P

IMO, the answer in the FAQ should have simply stated "Yes" - why bother saying to ignore anything?

RAW the bomb wouldn't go off. If you ignore the part that extends off the board, then it for all intents and purposes does not exist. That means your template doesn't overlap it.

Based on the FAQ ruling, I'd say it's clear that the mine does not detonate--as long as the only area of overlap between the mine token and the movement template occurs out of the play area.

That is my interpretation of the RAW as well, Vanor and Vorpal.

However, I have some serious doubts that it is what was intended by the rules. :P

Apologies - old man's eyesight coupled with small phone screen and strong American pale ale ( say what you like about Shermans but they make great beer!)

Given the FAQ entry I'd be inclined to think it's not considered a collision with a mine - but I'll await clarification.

I can't imagine the circumstances necessary for this situation to ever arise

Highly unlikely sure, but definitely possible. I think this question falls into the "1 in a billion chance this will ever come up, but what if it does?!" category. Definitely worth a good scholarly discussion :)

I'm trying to picture doing that in a game. I think I have screwed up on dropping mine. You fly in at a crazy angle. Then you make the perfect maneuver. You don't fly off. You don't hit the mine. Probably have one hull left and just lined up the perfect shot. Don't know if I would congratulate you or tell you off in frustration.
