Serpent From Yoth

By Amante, in CoC Rules Discussion

Serpent From Yoth's text box says, "Forced Response: After Serpent From Yoth enters your discard pile, each opponent must choose and sacrifice a creature.".

Does that response trigger if Serpent From Yoth is discarded from your hand to your discard pile? Or does it only take effect if it's alive as a creature and then killed / discarded through some effect?

From FAQ 2.0

"(v2.0) Card States

If a card has an ability that triggers in response to said card entering the discard pile, that effect does not resolve or trigger if that character had blank text, was attached to a domain as a resource, was discarded from hand, or was insane before it entered the discard pile. "

That answer gives me trouble. I only have two 'Transient' cards, but they both have: Action : pay 1 to return this card to your hand if it entered the discard pile this phase.

This seems a much less useful power if it cannot be used when discarded as a resource. Are there "Transient" cards that do not have this ability?

erm where its not useful? Transient cards discarded from Play when you use their domain to pay costs, so you then can play 1 to return it to hand. Why not?

And if you drop it from hand, its too enter discard pile. How you planned to use it if not this way?

I think he's referring to this portion of the text.

"...was attached to a domain as a resource, was discarded from hand..."

That would make his pay 1 to return to your hand both not function if discarded from hand or destroyed from a domain.

Hm.. if he about Local Sheriff - then i again don't see why he can't use his action to get back to hand, after he entered discard pile.

ps. its kinda hard to tell not knowing about What cards he talked.

Good question... So let's say I have the Local Sheriff in my hand and I get hit by a Byakhee attack. So I discard the Local Sheriff (and something else).

The question becomes, can I pay 1 to bring Local Sheriff back to hand?

We have the FAQ saying

If a card has an ability that triggers in response to said card entering the discard pile, that effect does not resolve or trigger if that character had blank text, was attached to a domain as a resource, was discarded from hand, or was insane before it entered the discard pile.

and the Local Sherif saying

Action : pay 1 to return Local Sheriff to your hand if it entered your discard pile this phase.

So I guess my only question is whether Local Sheriff's ability triggers in response to entering the discard pile. It looks like the trigger is "Pay 1" and that "entered your discard pile..." is a condition, but I'm not positive....

Problem is that there just one thing to which get all cards, dead or discarded - and its Discard pile.

Sheriff say - Action: pay 1 to return Local Sheriff to your hand if it entered your discard pile this phase.

It doesnt says if he was discarded or something.. it ask for him to get in to that pile this phase. I don't see problem here as long, as he got to discard pile in same phase when you trying to play his ability.

Faq 2.0.

"Note that some cards, like Local Sheriff, are not
triggered in response to entering your discard
pile, but have "Action:" effects that can be triggered
from your discard pile. These effects can
be triggered from your discard pile even if the
card was blank, insane, discarded from hand, or
attached to a domain as a resource before it
entered the discard pile."

Edit: ninja'd

Edit: and yes Sheriff and his cronies are not extremely useful as they give you a permanent 1 resource disadvantage; you should use them only if they allow to finish the game or to get a 2-3 resources advantage (the Rip-Off, Cleaning House, Urban Renewal).

I was thinking there was something wrong with my notes there but I didn't have the card in hand. I was almost positive I'd returned Local Sheriff after he was destroyed from a domain before. I'm glad that I didn't have to go back apologize to a previous opponent now. Because I hate apologizing. I'm sorry, I just do.

I suppose that means Serpent From Yoth's forced response definitely only triggers when it dies in play, otherwise it'd probably be an action like Local Sheriff?

The distinction between "response" and "Action" is noted.

I use the Sherif in the way described, because my decks are still a bit erratic. Several times, I've been able to play big characters sooner than I might otherwise, sometimes several times in a row. Once got three Ancient Ones out in three turns that way.

Exactly right, JgzMan, the Sheriff and similar cards have an Action which can be used at any time that phase, not a Response like that of the Serpent (which only works if discarded from play).

As for the utility of paying one to return Transient resources to hand, I would suggest that it's a very quick form of acceleration for Turns 1 and 2 for a deck structured to be full of high-cost cards. It's not great as a mid-game option and awful for late-game. Having said that, there are certain deck types (e.g. sacrifice decks) for which cards like "Repairer of Reputations" can be quite handy.

Just to be clear. If I have Gibbering Soul attached as a resource, and it somehow gets destroyed. I can or cannot use its Response to go get a character from my deck?

Gibbering Soul

Cost: 1

Skill: 1

Undead

Response: After Gibbering Sould is destroyed, Search your deck for a (Shub) character with a (combat) icon, reveal it, and place it in

your hand. Then, Shuffle your deck.

I also was wondering where I can get a copy of the most up-to-date FAQ?

Thanks
