[New FAQ] This MUST be done now

By PRODIGEE, in CoC General Discussion

Ok, we already asked for this monh ago. But now the Julia cycle is other, we need to have something done right now about several points.

I can't remember everything, but there's something to be done on those purposes :

- Eye of the Deep (the name occurance)

- The word "Count" and its mleaning in term of gameplay (Arcane Grifter, Hoodlum). Does the card still owns printed icons? We definetly need something written in a FAQ !

- Unorthodox Tactics and the lack of characters to resolves story at this conspiracy once won.

- Precision about every "instead" effects are needed, in a way to avoid every lamento

- The cards that have the mention "Any phase", which has to be supplemented by "Actions"

and precision about how cards works (Julia and the terror struggle, Trent dixon and its Ghost,

- any other precision you would be kind enough to report on this post, so we should have a proper answer from Nae or anyone else !

Agreed!

With Worlds less than a month away this desperately needs to be accomplished.

Call of Cthulhu cannot afford another fiasco like Worlds '08!

Agreed, it will be coming this week!

Forgive my ignorance, what is "Worlds"?

Worlds is the Cthulhu Card Games World Championship, usually held in the US Midwest at a big game conference in late Summer.

I forget which big conference, (Gencon? Origins?) as they are all the same from here in Los Angeles.

Thank you.

That is reassuring.

I am also glad to hear of the staff tourney.

It gives me hope that those that make the big decisions

effecting the future of the game stay somewhat connected to it.

Is it too late for the forum members to help with the faq, for instance

submit potenial issues to be resolved?

I keep checking... as of today (8-2-09) there is still no new FAQ as was promised. I know FFGs stewardship of this game has been lackluster, but please don't make promises unless you intend to deliver. enfadado.gif

We have just short of 2 weeks before GenCon and Worlds.

To compete players must explore various builds to find what they feel will be most competitive.

Once your basic build has been established the tweaking begins. All of this involves alot of

playtesting. Certain rule and card clarifications need to be established so Worlds can be as

competitive and legitimate as possible. The sooner the better but it should also be thurough.

I would hope by this time next week, giving participants some time to do last minute tweaks

and playtesting. For the sake of the game's future and the work and passion of those participating

I wish the best. I would join you but GenCon has been a tradition for me for many years now

so I have a number of obligations and Worlds would demand too much time. Good luck to all!

Yep. sorry about that, I misjudged the GEN CON work that the various teams were juggling. It is up now.

Noticed something in the FAQ:

"A card attached to a domain as a resource does not have a text box, unless the card has a Zoog resource symbol."

Hint of things to come in Dreamlands, perhaps?

A minor question, as I am pdf impaired: is there any way to turn off the background image and colors and read the faq as plain text?

Well, on a Windows system using CTRL+A to select and CTRL+C will let you copy the complete text into the clipboard to be pasted into an empty text file using CTRL+V.

You can use the edit menu to do the same.

If you're using an .rtf or .doc file it'll also keep most of the formatting / fonts.

You can also modify the settings of Adobe Reader to hide the background graphics using CTRL+K (or the last entry in the edit menu).

I'm using the German version of Adobe Reader, so I'm not sure how the tab / option is called in English. The tab should be called 'page view' or something similar. In the block 'page content and information' (or similar) It has an option saying something like 'display large images'. Disabling that will get rid of the background pictures.

Oh, you've noticed it too gui%C3%B1o.gif !!

I feel like something is coming out of the Dreamlands too.

I might have missed it but the new faq doesn't seem to enforce revealing cards you put into your hand after having searched. (I'd point out A Call for Help or Hand Camera as a examples of cards which don't force you to reveal).

If revealing cards you put into your hand is never enforced (and I might have missed it, I read the faq with quite a hurry), the amount of abuse A Call for Help could generate in the hand of an unscrupolous player who would abuse it is quite extensive.

Can anyone confirm me A Call for Help wasn't touched?

Also: was the choice to make

faq 2.0.) If a triggered effect has no specified
duration, then the effects of that
ability expire at the end of the current
phase.

into:

faq lcg) If a triggered ability has no specified
duration, then the effects of that
ability expire at the end of the current
phase.

very wise?

I think not, as I previously pointed out -about the time faq 2.0. came out, so we are talking about the age of Stonhenge here- that there are events that need to be time bound with "until the end of the phase" or they create wierd situations.

I can count at least one in WB who could be read, since the new faq: "then, until the end of the times, that character must commit to a different story". Was this a wanted effect?

On the same account, Midnight Alley has become a problematic card, as it should be read to say:

Response: After you lose an A struggle, sacrifice Midnight Alley to choose an opponent. That player must choose one of his domains, then exchange the cards in his hand with the resources attached to that domain until the end of the phase .

Now, what happens when the phase ends? Resources and cards in hand gets switched back? What if a previously resource, now in hand card has been played? When tha phase ends, does it become attached to the domain again? What if the Alley'ed player draw cards pefor the end of the phase? do they get switched too?

BTW, thank you jhaelen

Concerning your first problematic, Carioz, I'd say something :

Like you said searching for a card with "A Call for Help" lead to a situation where the active player is able to cheat. That is right.

But the lake of "reveal it" clausis is, IMM, totally appropriate, as it keeps some surprise for the one who play the card. Showing the card he chose would be definetly unapropriate in this case. Paying 3 and then revealing the card you've searched ... I would'nt ever consider such a card to be playable.

Then, the matter of trusting your opponent or not is not to be ruled by a guru or a game designer. It's your will to play against someone. You trust him or not, well it only depends on you. Why would such a thing be defined by FFG ? In case yuo don't trust the player, ask a Servitor to check the card if you want to, or ask your opponent in casual play .

It is not a matter of trusting your opponent or not, but to avoid situation where cheating is easy, doable and your opponent can do nothing about (except having a ref sit behind your opponent just in case he plays A Call for Help or the Camera or whatever, and stopping play at all the instances such cards are used).

C'mon Carioz, you're discribing a potential problematic situation, which can easily be treated with discussion and sportmanlike attitude.

I don't think that the cards should there be taken for a potential threat.

Speaking about your last suggestion of a problem with cards like Midnight alley ... I don't see the problem, as this card as a Response (and thus is to be taken as a Trigerred Effect and not an ability.

CF Rules P. 13

Triggered Effects
A triggered effect is any effect with preceded by the following text in bold: Action, Disrupt, Response, or Forced Response.

Triggered Ability
A triggered ability is any triggered effect caused by a card already in play.

Look, clearly you think that cards should not be precise enough to avoid troubles: more power to you. I think cards should have built in enough precise wording an safety to avoid cheating. Avoiding potential troubles is not such a bad idea, that's why any sane person uses backups: it is not because you are planning for your system to fail, it is because if it fails, well, you can catch the problem and resolve it.

What? Midnight Alley effect is a triggered effect and a triggered ability, and thus subject to that specific faq entry. Why are you claiming it is an effect and not an ability?

As for MidAlley:

Now, if MidA response is a triggered ability (and I cannot see any reason to deny this), then Midnight Alley is covered by that faq entry.

Since it is covered by the faq, its effect last only until the end of the phase.

Since its effect lasts only until the end of the phase, its effect can be read:

"Response: After you lose an A struggle, sacrifice Midnight Alley to choose an opponent. That player must choose one of his domains, then exchange the cards in his hand with the resources attached to that domain until the end of the phase ." (emphasis mine)

Since the exchange part can easilly be read as a lasting effect and not a one time happening (like wound, kneel, exhaust or undrain), once the lasting effect stops (at the end of the phase) how are cards to be attached? What if some cards entered or exit play, meanwhile?

Gonna answer more precisely later, end of daywork here ... gui%C3%B1o.gif

I know what you mean saying the more precise the best. But What I tryed to say was that the text card preserve the card from being useless, showing your suprise-card to your opponent.

I really enjoy when you say I clearly love the text to be unclear (And I won't argue on this, time is money!). But I don't know why you claim this card's text would surely produce cheating and so, despite what you may think, I stand on my position saying this is not a point that should enter a FAQ.

This way, why don't we add a part of the FAQ libelled : "How to deal with card accidentally drawn ?", " How to react when your opponent just made a mistake ?" I don't want to be ruse or anything, but I still believe this is to be manage during play.

Servitor and tournament organizers are here to follow those kind of situation. And they are the only voice to be followed this way.

To me, "exchange" is an action verb, much like "exhaust" or "wound". You don't "exchange until the end of the phase", you do it once. It is not ongoing and doesn't have an expiration.

Good morning everyone.

Well, Concerning the Midnight Alley, I would like to explain a little further why I quoted the text from the rules :

Midnight alley is concern by a Response Trigger to a A struggle. It refer to an "Exchange" effect (which is not clearly defined in game terms in the FAQ but still get some description).

(v1.0) Exchange Control or Game Position
An exchange must involve two entities that are changing their status or position. [...]

There is no notion of duration here. This is a game term like, say, "Exhaust", "Move a success token" ... It's not really different from the "Usual Put into Play", "Take Control" and "Remove from Play". Ok, it's not specified as an exception, but the game text of the seven cards concerned

(North Church, Hack Journalist, Wave function, Pentagram, Keeness of two alike.... ) always specified a special duration everytime the effect is designed to last only a phase.

You might be right saying this should be an addition to consider for the futur FAQ 1.1 gran_risa.gif

Folks:

I have had to erase numerous posts here in regards to the 2008 World Championships. The continued references to "cheating", including the fake "Cott Cheaterton" card, must end. Regardless of opinions to the contrary, there is a legitimate 2008 World Champion, and continued claims to the contrary, veiled or clear-cut, are clear violations of FFG's forum policy, which is located at the top of each forum page:

4. Treat everyone (users or not) with respect, while enjoying the freedom to disagree with their ideas.

Just so we're all clear, accusing a player of cheating is by no means treating them with respect.

Thanks to the majority of Call of Cthulhu LCG players for making this a fun forum. We here at FFG apologize for the immaturity of a small number of users.

- Jeremy @ FFG

Wow, FFGs first (as far as I know) acknowledgement of Worlds '08!

Why no congratulations? Why no photo of the Champion with accompanying article?

A year of silence and suddenly we have a legitimate 2008 World Champion?

Why now Jeremy and not 11 months ago? Personally I have never posted accusing

anyone of cheating but I must question the timing of this announcement.
