New squadron Keyword

By Lurtz, in Star Wars: Armada

So I love role playing and game modification, I am working on new squdrons that will be Elite or even ace. I want them to be better than their vanilla counterparts but have a slight edge i have some ideas of my own id like to throw at you but i would love everybodies opinion. My main concern is i domt want them affecting the game balance too much, but give them enough umph to be thematic for Role playing.

New keywords. I was thinking along the lines of.

Elite: this could be somthing like

"Re-roll 1 attack die per attack in addition to other modifiers"

Or i could just give the fighters an extra attack die.

I was also thinking about

Ace: every squadron phase this squadron may make a move and attack

though i relize that one is very op, it was really just a thought.

So does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

also id like to not mess with squadron speed or health for instance.

I'd think the simplest way to modify a squadron to being Elite would be to give it a single defence token; maybe a Brace token for Elite and a Scatter token for Ace.

I do like the idea but if i can id like to stay away from that simply because i want the elite squadrons to feel powerful and cost more but not be unique, the only squadrons to recieve defence tokens are the unique aces. So ill probablt give those to aces but im not totally convinced 'elite' squadrons should get them

If there was going to be an 'Ace', Wedge would have gotten it.

Pressure sure there will be a keyword for the light freighters coming out with Wave 2. 'Heavy' doesn't seem fitting for them, but they should have a dynamic that's different from normal fighters.

When i mentioned ace, if i decided to implement that somehow it would be for all aces (unique pilots basically) though again would that not be a bit op?

IMO, nothing is OP if it is costed appropriately.

Fair enough, so what then do you think is a good cost increase for something like that?

ive had a look at the cards and as of yet don't have a good grasp of how they go about determining cost. Wether there is a system or not.

and what do you think a good cost increase for something like 'elite' would be. Does and Elite tie fighter squadron cost 10 points as opposed to 8?

I was thinking 11, but certainly 10-11-12 is the right ballpark.

Your upper boundary issue is whether I'd rather be sitting in an X-Wing at 13 or in your elite TIE. I think the X-Wing is superior, so it's got to be under 13, but a re-roll is very powerful (even though you're only rolling 3 dice to start), so 11 feels right to me. YMMV.

Only reason I think most aren't really focused on these issues is because the squadrons are a bit of a sideshow. I would guess that FFG's approach is that with distinctions among the types of fighters, plus having exceptional personalities is more than enough in something that is not in the spotlight.

Id also say 11-12 ti keep it under an x wing. thiugh an elite tie in a warm would get 2 re rolls which is no joke. But then your looking at apoints upgrade of 3-4 so taking that into account it coupd be applied to other fighter types.

Well i disagree, i don't think ther'ye a sideshow. I think fighters are extremely important, can make or break strategy in this game and are awesomesauce/thematic but its fine if they dont wanna give me feedback on this its not as though it will become an official part of the game. Its just a side project i've got going because i like to over complicated things and introduce roleplaying elements everywhere!

of course thats one of the reasons we like this game no? Because it darth vader who made that last attack run against those rebel scum x wing survivors, or it was wedge antilles who came to save the day right before the victory 2 blew our corvette to high haven. If i can in a 1000 point game have a mainstay of regular ties and then have the 'Deaths Heads' Squadron of elite ties make that flank that just makes my opponent shudder well thats a game i wanna play.

And making up squadrons and backgrounds is just tooo much fun.

So an alternate to a re roll might be to just add a dice to the total attack pool? Though i think im against that personally but what are erebodys thoughts on that?

And another reason to Not do defense tokens on non unique fighter squadrons is youd have too keep track of them with multiple of the same squadron cards.
