Which Expansions to get first?

By muaddib33, in Runebound

I was hoping to get some opinions on the expansions for runebound. I just purchased Runebound for my 8 yr old son and I to play. We have been doing the Tailisman thing for a while and he loves it. We are also having a great deal of fun with Runebound. I am looking at some of the cheaper expansions...the decks...until I can scrounge up the change for Descent.

What I would like to know is what you good folks have used and which ones you would recommend so I can make sure my local game store can get them for me.

Thanks a bunch

You can also find many other reviews and comments about Runebound and its expansions at:

www.boardgamegeek.com

Board Game Geek is also the most comprehensive board game site on the web so well worth adding to your favorites list as you can read up on evergy game that was ever made. Plus the site has lots of great photos of the games and cool fan made expansions for the game. As one of the biggest Runebound geeks around, I've posted a lot of new Runebound material on the site, such as new Runebound heroes and the Cities of Adventure variant. There are also a lot of really well done Doom Track variants which increase the speed and tension of the game.

All that said, my favorite "big box" expansion is Sands of Al-Khalim. I'm also a huge fan of the third wave of card expansions as I think they were superior to waves 1 and 2. I'd avoid the class decks until last as they add a lot of complexity to the game and that is probably not something you are looking for.

Cheers,

Judd

Thanks Judd

I was kind of thinking the same about the class decks...but he is a pretty sharp kid and might like the extra abilities.

I will look into your suggestions.

I also highly recommend Frozen Wastes.

For me, all of the card deck expansion that integrate into the core game are must haves. They make the variety of encounters and market items so diverse that each game will always feel fresh and new.

I have all the expansion (and love them all) but it's these decks that I get the most out of.

Thanks for the website recommendation, wasn't sure which expansion to get but now Mr S easy guide has put me onto a winner!

Can you help out some new Runebound players? We'd like to know which expansions by title are the best two or three which are purely supplements to the core game. I've looked through the suggested links but am still uncertain and would like some more opinions.

Well, judging from the posts, the two best big box expansions would be Sands of Al-Kalim and The Frozen Wastes, but those are alternate games and feature new map boards. For starting expansions, I would reccomend either the Items &Ally expansion decks or the Challenge Card expansion decks as they do not change the game, only provide more variation in terms of challenges/encounters and Items/allies, making it more replayable. Unfortunately the extra challenge cards only really work with the core game. Items and Allies will work with any adventure variant and even the big box expansions.

Good to know! And thanks... I hadn't thought about the fact that "events" are likely geared to a specific endgame, so might not be usable with expansions that included a new one.
