VSD Antenna Breaks Too Easily?

By Rithrin, in Star Wars: Armada

Three of my friends and I bought one Core set each. We all had perfect VSDs at our homes, but arrived at our local gaming store with broken antennas on our VSDs. I even ran into two people at my local store with the same issue on launch day.

So I wondered, is it just us? It seemed too much of a coincidence. We had all independently determined that the Core box was a decent way to store our minis for travel to the store, putting the VSD on it's stand on one side of the box's insert. The antenna doesn't touch the top of the box when closed, but apparently the insert is just low enough that if you put the manual on top, it can slide and will just barely nick the antenna if it does.

Of course, I'm going to try to see if FFG is able to sell me the antenna bit, so I can glue it back on. Figured I would warn people against trying to transport their stuff like this, and hoping that FFG might increase the height of their insert by a fraction of an inch.

The bit is a little weak...

I just store my minis in the transparent plastic support tray, rather than on their base and pegs; your VSD antenna will never get hit other than in play, or if you smash the box for some reason. The base and pegs remain constructed, and it's a simple matter to place the mini on the peg.

i removed the bottom plastic insert (the one that the ships came in) and i use the top plastic cover to put over top of my ships while they are standing on their bases. no broken antenna, and they're kept quite secure, even with a nice viewing window from the box!

i wouldn't recommend tilting the box sideways during transportation this way though

It is not just you, but I managed to avoid your fate by storing the manuals and cards in a separate binder. I'm working on a more ideal transportation solution, but of the several played with at my FLGS I know at least 2 people broke the top antenna, one when he was getting the ships out for the first time when he laid it on its side, not realizing that the weight would hit the antenna before the command tower.

My antenna bit is completely unglued. I can remove it and reinsert it with no trouble. That should prevent it from breaking, I hope.

Mine broke. Spot of paint to cover the break was all that it needed.

Both mine broke. Not completely off, but they look broke.

mine wiggles, and i broke the peg for the Corvette but just grazing it with my elbow, it now had a wooden replcement.I'm finidng that compared to X-wing that these things are way too fragile.

Mine is also also broke. Wondering whether it's even worth gluing it back on...

yep broke way to easy

If you guys know how to pin and have a small enough drill bit it can be put back on stronger than before. But that is if you know how to pin.

You can always replace it by drilling it and using brass rod. Never break then. However that said I threw it in a punch foam brief case right away after buying it. Discarded the game box. Put all the bits and tokens into tackle box type set up.

My MicroHangar for the VSD is designed to prevent exactly this:

The VSD rests inside at an angle so there's no pressure on the antenna.

Will do my best to do a new hangar where you can put in the Victory and a broken antenna, store it away over night (full moon!) and get a fixed one in the morning. Shouldn't be too difficult... ;-)

Heck, I've pondered removing it on purpose just to avoid it being a hassle. It's kind of an unnecessary affectation in my book anyway.

Mine lasted four days. Oh well.

Cheers

I broke a friends during play. I felt really bad about it.

Can't the VSD shake side to side and "roll"? Or does the lid stop it from moving very far?

Come on guys, admit it. You had a Lenny moment and hugged that puppy too hard. :P

Just got my core set yesterday. Looks like my VSD made it unscathed but my Neb B broke off it's peg almost immediately. The plastic seems far more brittle than I was expecting. It even feels odd. I've never played x wing, do they feel like the same plastics?

I have 2 VSDs and have not broken either. I use a Plano Case and just put them in the top part of the case. If I were to drop it, I guess it'd be technically possible to break it, but that's about the only way I see it being a problem. Before I got my case, I used the plastic inserts (cut down a bit to not be so ridiculous) they came in.

Mine came bent all the way to a 90 degree angle. I was able to bend it back, but it'll probably be weak now and break eventually.

Bought 2. Both broken before getting them to the table.

We have 6 people here with Victories, all intact, no broken parts on any ship actually  You guys all have big thumbs or what?

Nope, no rolling, the box provides a rather tight fit on all sides. A little shake won't do any harm.

I'm working on a box that will allow me to stuff my fleet in a bag and bicycle around with it, without breaking these fragile parts. I'm glad you all posted your experiences to give me warning on this count.
