We know ancient ones are mostly evil, but if we were to rank their 'niceness', their good thoughts and deeds, how would you rank them?
The 'nicest' ancient one
I dunno, in the stories Yig is really nice to his children, snakes and snake people. I mean, he is pretty darn brutal otherwise, but still he's got to have some nice points for that. Not like Abhoth, who just eats his children/spawn.
Tsathoggua always seemed like a ****. Yog especially. He basically loved 'em and left 'em in the Dunwhich Horror to poor Lavina. That's just a **** move all around.
Is a little difficult to put them into human terms, as they are mostly unknowable horrors. Nyarlthotep has got to be high on the ****-osity levels, though. Dude is jerk through and through.
"Nice" Ancient Ones, eh? Hmm....
In the Dark Pharaoh expansion, one of the allies you can get is The Messenger, who is an avatar of Nyarlathotep. That's kind of a nice gesture.
Azathoth just destroys the world on a whim, without any real malevolence guiding him.
Bokrug can feign pity on the investigators.
Yibb-Tstll gives really good back rubs.
Bokrug doesn't seem like a bad guy, he was just too busy to get revenge on Sarneth for a thousand years or so. Nyarly has mostly human servants so he's probably a decent guy if you work for him. He hates the other AOs and isn't planning a human genocide so that's nice of him. Hastur just wants people to appreciate the arts. It's not his fault people these days can't sit through a play w/out freaking out.
Since good thoughts and deeds require intent, no ancient one would be capable of 'good' deeds, as humans would see them.
However, it would be a safe bet to put Nyarlathotep at the top (since he jokingly interacts with humans) and Azathoth at the bottom (he can't think).
Though I would argue that no thought is more benevolent than diabolical intent. In a way this puts Nyar at both the top and bottom of the list.
I agree. If Azathoth can't think, then he's no more evil than a tornado. More dangerous than a tornado, to be sure, but not more evil.
Yog-Sothoth doesn't seem especially 'evil' (consider, for example, their conversation with Randolph Carter in "Through the Gates of the Silver Key") though their powers generally get used for evil by humans.
Bokrug... yes, definitely vengeful rather than evil (and I like the way that the IH card fits that)
