BoSS -Bureau of Ships and Services - License

By TXRyanLee, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Back in the WEG days, they had a Star Wars Gamemaster Screen (Revised) book.

Inside, they had this cool sheet document for a License for Ownership of a Starship.

I couldn't find one online and the one I had was used and written on, so I recreated it.

It's just a basic outline of the old sheet. I don't have those fancy skills some of you have. :)

It makes a nice prop for your player characters to hand over to the Imperial Officer after being stopped.

I still have some of the old ones with my sheets for my Indy and some of my Pirate and Privateer characters (The ones who obtained their ships legally at least though sometimes I had slicers or forgers arrange ones for illegally obtained craft.)

I may have that in my box of WEG stuff. I was just leafing through the old Tramp Freighter book and Pirates and Privateers last week before I ordered the beginner games for this system and thinking it'd be fun to play a Star Wars game again...

I had every player in a Star Wars game in the late '90s sign a copy of the "Letter of Marque" and "Ship's Articles" from Pirates & Privateers with their character's name as a mood-setting tool. It seemed like it helped get them into the spirit of the game.

I like that, i dont think you need fancy skills. I doubt BOSS cares much for art.
Would there be any rules to fill this in? I feel like I would just be making up numbers all over the place.

Feel like id end up having a "my password is password" kind of attitude to filling it out.

20 galactic credits if someone can show me what one looks like when its filled out lol, i just need to do a job for a hutt to get the credits.

It looks great!

Would there be any rules to fill this in? I feel like I would just be making up numbers all over the place.

Based on an example from the old license:

Captain's Accredited License

Name: Name of character

Sex: Sex of character

Date of Birth: (this is kind of a tough one, based on whatever time you're playing in)

Height: Height of character (feet, inches or meters - Imperial law probably wants it in meters)

Homeworld: Where you're from

Species: What exactly are you?

Captain's Accredited License Number: It appears to go in this order (A=letter, # = number)

(AAA - ##### - AA##AA): I've just been randomly rolling: d20 for the Letter and a d10 for the number.

Starship Classification: This may be "What kind of craft can you pilot?" Like Class A and Class C licenses. Example: Light Freighters, Medium Freighters, Heavy Transports, Cargo Shuttles

Registration with BoSS On: The date your character got this license (again, based on your time line)

Visual Identification: A pic of your character's handsome/beautiful face.

Ship's Operating License

Ship Name: Ship's name

Craft: Possibly the type of craft: Example: Stock Light Freighter

Type: The craft type; example: YT-1300, YT-1930, VCX-100

Manufacturer: Who built it? Corellian Engineering? Is it Nubian?

Starship Registry Number: It appears in this order (A-letter, # - number)

(AA## - ###AAA - AA##). Random roll it. d20 for the Letter, and a d10 for the number.

Port of Origin: Where did you start your journey from?

Current Owner: Possibly you or the person you're piloting this ship for.

Captain's Accredited License Number: As above in the Captain's Accredited License.

Visual Identification: A picture of your swift, rugged, and/or delapitated vehicle.

Arms Load-Out Permit

Ship Name: As Above

Starship Registry Number: As Above

Current Owner: As Above

Captain's Accredited License Number: As Above

Weapon: What're ya packing in this slot?

Position: Where does said weapon face?

Reason for Permit: Why are you equipped with 4 quad laser cannons? (Psst.. go with "Self Defense")

The 'Current Transponder Code Profile' - just draw some wiggly lines or wave patterns, in red, blue and yellow lines - just to add some flavor.

Here's an example, using what I've written above and using my current main character from our Edge of the Empire campaign.

Ah that's really cool. I'll prob print a few of these out. All I need now is a way to take a photo of my characters inner beauty

This makes it easier to understand what kind of problems could come up from having a forged BosS

I scanned front and back of a page out of a WotC book that had a similar form for the operating license and the arms loadout.

See https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/79813707/SW-EotE/Sheets/BOSS%20Ships%20Operating%20License.pdf and https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/79813707/SW-EotE/Sheets/BOSS%20Arms%20Loadout%20Permit.pdf

Let’s see if we can get them to link directly into this forum. First, the license:

Next, the loadout permit:

Note that one of the new books (Fly Casual?) mentions that there is actually a special datapad that goes with each ship, and that’s supposed to be heavily encrypted, etc…. That datapad is supposedly what you actually hand over to the people who are doing ship inspections, and so on.

So don’t EVER lose that datapad! Or muck with it! ;)

I remember one of my Rebel Privateers, who had purchased his current ship legally putting "Travel through areas with Rebel pirate activity" as his reason for permit on the ship's arms loadout sheet. The irony was very amusing to everyone in the group.

He was actually being honest about why he needed the guns he just didn't mean what the Bureau of Ships and Services thought he meant.

Well if anyone steals a ship (characters in the beginners game) this would easily become a problem, becoming only able to dock in shadowports or in the wilderness.

It does a little bit feel like your leaving the keys in the car, when you leave your Datapad.

Yeah the BoSS is a datapad, which I was thinking when I saw that BoSS sheet, because would be weird if there was a form that had the same information tripled. But it would really be like separate files on the datapad.

But its cooler having it all as one sheet just for RPGing. Im certainly not building my own datapad for my RPGs. (Though now I wish i could buy a big blocky datapad that looks appropriate for slicing, rather than happy, friendly, User friendly ipad/ or tablet)

Here are some images of what cards and such were in the bounty hunter's code crate.

That’s exactly where I was going next. Thanks!

These are pretty cool and I'll probably print some off for myself. One question though, can anyone tell what the convention is for dates? Just from comparing the dates on Boba's License it seems to go Year:Month:Day. And then how do should one define the year? BBY and ABY are good for relating OOC but is there an Imperial Standard that is used?

I've had some thoughts on the Date Convention, mainly Using the year that Palpatine established the Empire as Year 1 but keeping the standard months and day. I was thinking of using After Declaration(AD) or Year of the Empire/Emperor(YE) similar to Anno Domini or Before Christ or Common Era or Before Common Era. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

He stole the ship and destroyed the other prototypes.

But would love to see something like that.

He stole the ship and destroyed the other prototypes.

I never understood why he did that honestly. Stealing Slave One makes sense but why blow up the other prototypes? Did some rival shipwright put out a bounty for destruction of the prototypes or something?

To keep others from copying him I suppose... they're supposed to be a pretty BA ship unmodified. But something tells me that Boba Fett would never bother to fill out a BoSS License Application, especially after stealing one and blowing the rest up. And it's not like Kuat Systems Engineering wouldn't build replacement prototypes..

Another reason it doesn't make sense for him to blow them up unless someone hired him to do so. Unless he destroyed every copy of the blueprints all he did was delay production by a few weeks or months if that long and anger a very powerful corporation in the process.

I told a fib it was his father who stole Slave 1.

You're right... thanks a lot George!!!

Just made these up for my mando using my ship from Star Citizen

I must have missed it. Are there rules somewhere for what is Now required to have false credentials? A masked transponder? A fake registration?
