Enough of all this positivity! Time to discuss the worst ship paint scheme.

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Rebel Ys are kinda wimpy.

And Decimators are kinda bland. They work. But they're so uninspiring. This must be what it looks like to stare at a cubicle all day. Imagine some giddy Imperial officer with a new promotion: Welcome, you get a new gray cubicle.

Nah, my cubicle is much more entertaining than the Decimator looks.

I'm also not crazy about the red Interceptor... Just does nothing for me.

The StarViper paint job leaves a lot to be desired. The plain black and white scheme is supposed to be indicative of the Black Sun organization, but there is no symbol to identify it as such (like the one on the wings of the Black Sun Z-95). It's just a very uninspired look. It feels more like something you'd pick your kids up from intergalactic soccer practice in, instead of being a sleek, dangerous, highly advanced starfighter.

You have seen the actual mini itself, right? Massive Black Sun logo on one of the upper wings?

The HWK looks like a flying turd. And without a turret it might as well be one.

I immediately thought this when I read the OP. You beat me to it.

Speaking of which, brb in 5. I've got a HWK in the hangar bay waiting for clearance to depart.

Tie fighters seem pretty basic to me overall just black and gray...XP

I like the HWK's paint scheme :(

As for worst, I'm willing to vote for Rebel Y-Wing as well, or the original rebel X-Wing paint. Though the latter may purely be because I really prefer the Escort X-Wing paintjob, and only ever play Wedge in that X-Wing.

I consider the Scyk to be more maroon/olive green, not mustard/purple. It works just fine for me.

Anyway I am a big supporter of custom paint jobs, and I was talking to my fellow Golden Demon winner buddy about Scum ships the other day and he was also saying how much he likes the color combo on the Scyks, and would likely paint some S&V ships to match them :D

WRT to the StarViper, not sure how you guys missed the Black Sun emblem on the upper wing. Either way, I'm looking at repainting mine since it is indeed a bit too bland. Considering a dark metallic with an iridescent sheen added. Make them real insectoid looking.

The stock Lambda paintjob is very poor.

Lambda...

Definitely the Lambda...

Though Y-wing comes close.

At least the ones I got...

I would certainly not say that the Lambda or Decimator have bad paintjobs. Boring perhaps but that's the Imperial way. Uniform and boring, with little to no distinguishing markings.

I agree, Macross. I love my Lambda. It looks straight out of the movies.

Worst paint scheme goes to the dress. Is it black and blue or is it white and gold?

I know it's black and blue, but it is soooo much prettier white and gold. I saw it in white and gold and was like "I want that dress!" and then I saw it on the website and was like "Ohhh...."

Every time I have seen it, it looked blue and gold. Has not changed once.

I'll say Rebel Y-Wing as well. Just kinda a lifeless shade of yellow... with a bit of wash and polish with detailing it looks much better though. One ended up as a Grey Squadron/Hired Gun though as a result of looking just awful.

I'll also go for the M3-A. While I don't like the ship in the first place I just can't stand the colour at all! Looks like this odd bug... tortoise thing.

Any of the TIE models after the Fighter/Advanced. Aside from the Royal Guard (that isn't a very nice shade of red), they're all blueish. Why? The light grey of the first two wasn't great (decent enough, but not very nice), but the blue simply doesn't look right - made even worse when used alongside those earlier ships, as the normally-uniform Imperials now have some strange variety in their ranks. Only positive note is that they were the reason I started repainting my ships (metal/silver with deep black panels), something I've very much enjoyed doing.

From a technical point of view, my M-3As have been the worst: colours aren't great at the best of times, but there are major pools of black wash on various places, instead of the neater paintjobs all other ships have. Ah well, they were going to be repainted anyway...

I put 'nail art' imperial cogs on the sides of my shuttle and decimator (courtesy of my mate Simon who is a poster on here) and they look tons better for just that small add on.

I agree the Y wing paint job for rebels is appalling but the scum one is brilliantly done.

the rebel Y paint is insipid urine yellow and pale grey but the scum scheme is a cracking 'red oxide and black scheme with nice weathering

I had to partially repaint my rebel y wings to give them any real definition and make it obvious they have a roof weapon on the cockpit... the scum Ys needed no such help.

From the wiki:

"Industrial Light & Magic's (ILM) Colin Cantwell created the concept model that established the TIE fighter's ball-cockpit and hexagonal panels design for A New Hope. Initially given a blue color scheme, the TIE fighter models for the first Star Wars movie were grey to better film against a bluescreen; TIE fighters in the next two movies shifted back to being a muted blue."

Yep and wierdly some of the early FFG core set ties were grey/white.

I always wanted a couple of those as escorts for the much lighter tie advanced as 'vaders wingmen' but i've yet to be able to track down any.

Any pictures of the different looks for ties? I'd label my tie fighters as white gray and my other types of ties a blue gray.

Can you explain this nail art thing and post some pics? I'd greatly appreciate it. Beautiful Y-wings btw.

I can put imperial cogs on my nails??? Why did I not know this before today?

"Gives it a Babylon 5 feel"

Dude. That can only ever be a plus not a negative.

Well, no one's mentioned my least favorite paint jobs so I'll put my vote in for the rebel aces repaints. I hate the yellow on the A-wing engines and wish they had picked a different shade of blue. And I think the B-wing paint scheme is pretty uninspired. I'm not very creative but I think I could have come up with something better than just painting parts of the ship red. I realize they were trying to duplicate the artwork on the Dagger squadron pilot card but I still think it looks lousy. Maybe if they had picked a different shade of red or a different color entirely. I think the color choices are a big part of why I dislike the Rebel Aces paint jobs.

BTW, those Scyk repaints look great. I like the grey metal coloring for the ship body combined with the purple and orange.
