Kavil, Torkil, Palob: The two ship list killer??? Thoughts and suggestions

By ctsparky, in X-Wing Squad Lists

By no means is this my list. I saw the list on List Juggler and it won the Mr. Nice Guys Store Championship as I recall.

Here is the list:

Scum 100 points

Torkil with ICT, Greedo Crew, and Feedback Array (27)

Kavil with Opportunist, Blaster Turret, and R4 Agromech (34)

Palob in the Moldy Crow, with Opportunist, Blaster Turret, K4 Security driod crew, Hull upgrade and Feedback array (39)

Play:

In essence have Torkil Nerf PS of the Big bad down to zero.

Have Palob strip the token away from the target.

Then pound on the target with Opportunist procing. K4 and R4 provide target locks, and you are doing some serious damage.

Otherwise use feedback array or Greedo to finish off if you can't get past green dice.

Pros: Great against a big ship or two ship list. Very control oriented.

???

???

Cons: Ships are slow, not very maneuverable.

???

???

Questions for the hive mind:

  1. How would you play this squad against the usual suspects?
  2. How would you play against this squad with your choice of warband?
  3. What would you do differently in build ?

Thanks as always.. this has me searching for a second HWK.

I'd be worried about running a list the depends in Blaster Turrets for almost all of its damage. A list that brings Wes, Carnor Jax, Dark Curse or much in the way of stress dealing is going to be a pretty hard counter. A list with a rival Palob that loses initiative is also likely to be a tough match up.

I also don't get the suicide load out on Mux.

Ya, I'm not a big fan of having feedback array and Greedo on a ship with only 5 hp.

With four hull I don't want to be flipping over cards, and again with five hp, getting ioned and dmg in exchange for 1 dmg doesn't seem worth it.

With that much firepower something should die without the need.

Though I guess it's there specifically for jax.

I like the three of them and I came up with my own similar but different upgrades.

But as mentioned I'd be afraid of jax, Wes, even roark since his ability activates at start of combat vs end of activation phase.

Luckily don't see roark much In competitive play

The combination of Blaster Turret and Opportunist will make your ships relatively easy to block. The stress from Opportunist can only be gotten rid of by a small number of green moves on each ship. Neither ship can afford to take white maneuvers while they are stressed because they'll need to focus to fire their turrets. Palob will be better off than Kavil but the Moldy Crow token bank runs out quickly when aren't filling it up with Recon Specialist.

Hey that's my list. I guess I have to comment then.

Greedo isnt necessary but the crits can help.

Feedback array on the scum ships was because I knew I would face at least 1 Carnor Jax and it's my lifeline against them. It definitely saved me in the first round of top 8. Torkil is almost always the last target and he's not going to win the game by himself.

I think out of the 8 games I played I actually ran out of focus on Palob and that target lock I get form k4 helps a bunch and I wouldn't change it.

As far as Wes goes, Im not that afraid of him with Torkil and noone was running him. It may be the meta where I am but I really never see all these "Panic Attack" stress lists and if I do they're at the bottom so I don't play against them. Carnor Jax is the biggest issue I've run into.

They had me stream a game yesterday, I'll post a link to the video whenever they put it up.

You'll get to see Lambot beat Luke and some B wings when the videos of our stream hit YouTube today. Surprising damage output from this list.

both Mux and Palob become a lot more valuable the more ships you have (especially against two ship lists)

Mux shuts down an elite enemy, allowing all your crappy ships to get damage off before they get one-shot by a super modified hlc or something

Palob strips them of defensive tokens, giving even two dice ships decent chances at hitting through 3 agility and reducing the damage certain elite ships and output by removing offensive focus.

Also, blaster turret without moldy is a huge **** "no-no" as are HWKs in general, imo. I'd be hard pressed to find another 3-point upgrade that skyrockets a ship's viability as much, apart from PTL on interceptors

Here is Lambot's game against the Rebel Master aka InstantAequitas from last night. This list is nasty.

Store Champion Skirmish! X-wing Featured Match-B'…:

I think this list is a great outlier. If you aren't expecting it, then this list can put the hurt out fast. it is a turreted list too.

In the match above it seems the rebel player didn't really give enough room to turn around and be able to stay at range 3.

Several of the people I played told me they weren't prepared for it

Several of the people I played told me they weren't prepared for it

makes sense

I put Palob by himself on the table for a local tournie and all but one of the players didn't know wtf I was doing (the **** is that thing? **** it's slow. Wait, why aren't you removing your focus at the end of turn? Where the **** did he get that extra token from? Oh, it's mine!?)

not in those exact words, of course :P

point being, I don't think a HWK is a ship many people expect to ever see, let alone in pairs

You're right ficklegreendice, It really isn't, but FFG did a good job at making a reble ship that was almost never played except for in 150pt games, a scum ship that can leave you wondering where all your ships went.

they learned from their past mistakes

So I was just musing about a Kavil + Palob Opportunist list last night, but mine goes like this:

Kavil (24)
Opportunist (4)
Blaster Turret (4)
R4 Agromech (2)

Palob Godalhi (20)
Bodyguard (2)
Blaster Turret (4)
Recon Specialist (3)

Mandalorian Mercenary (35)
Tactician (2)

Total: 100

Kavil — Y-Wing 24 Opportunist 4 Blaster Turret 4 R4 Agromech 2 Palob Godalhi — HWK-290 20 Bodyguard 2 Blaster Turret 4 Recon Specialist 3 Mandalorian Mercenary — Firespray-31 35 Tactician 2

The Mandalorian is just basic filler, with a twist > :) I was considering putting a StarViper, some Headhunters, or 2 Flechette Scyks (kinda my favourite from these, might actually switch to this)

Kavil (24)
Opportunist (4)
Blaster Turret (4)
R4 Agromech (2)

Palob Godalhi (20)
Bodyguard (2)
Blaster Turret (4)
Recon Specialist (3)

Cartel Spacer (14)
Flechette Cannon (2)
"Heavy Scyk" Interceptor (Cannon) (2)

Cartel Spacer (14)
Flechette Cannon (2)
"Heavy Scyk" Interceptor (Cannon) (2)

Palob will spend 3 focus per turn if he gets them, in order of priorities> Shooting Blaster turret > Bodyguard > Modifying dice. Kavil will survive more. If Palob dies, the Mandalorian might get a good setup for Kavil's Opportunist.

My main worry would be that several of the two ship lists tend to have a good (defensive) action economy.

Corran Horn with PtL for a focus+evade. YTs with Recon Specialist and possibly Jan Ors. Kyle Katarn crew. Decimator with Isard, IGs with PtL... all of those can have two tokens, Palob takes 1, leaving another that stops Opportunist from triggering.

That being said, I applaud the original list, and look forward to using a HWK myself, once my Most Wanted set finally arrives... *grumbles about delayed shipments, limited stock and other things that left me waiting for up to a month*
