Some Rules Questions

By el pollo diablo, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

These questions came up the last time I played:

1. The GOO was Ithaqua and one of us was Michael McGlenn.

Does his abbility of ignoring 1 stamina loss also count for the -1 stamina when on streets at the end of the Mythos phase when Ithaqua is the GOO?

2. Can the characters trade any items and money between each other and in which phase would this take place?

Are there exceptions or is this not possible at all?

3. For the third question I need the help of other german players. Hopefully there are some here...

My question is, did they mislabel the spells/abbilities cards (Zauber/Fertigkeiten) in the rulebook? Because I had to get rid of all my spellcards at one point and if I would have followed the description of the rulebook I would have had to get rid of my abbility cards which didn't make sense. So I guess it's just an production error of the rulebook?

1. I should say the Gangster can tough out the 1 stamina damage, taking none

2. Investigators may trade money, common items, unique items, spells and deputy items before/during/after movement, but NOT during combat. Every other card does not count as items, and clues and monster trophies cannot be traded.

3. I can't help you there.

Yes Michael does just shrug off Ithaquas icy winds.

The 2nd question is answered.

As for the 3rd question, I speak German, but dont have the German edition, so how do you mean? What part of the rulebook are you referring to? Spells and Skills (the English word used for Fähigkeiten) are not the same thing of course, Spells are classed as 'Items' (not sure what the German word used is) along with Common Items, Unique Items and Exhibit Items, so any time the game instructs 'lose X items" it means choose from these things.

Im not sure if this is part of your confusion though, I need to know more about the situation and the part of the book you mean. It sounds from what you say though as if there has just been a printing error.

The part about spells and skills, I'm guessing

Thanks for the quick answers.

Michael seemed very ovwerpowered because of that.

The Player playing him didn't lose any stamina at all the whole game...

Hm, I traded clues as well, so we did that wrong... ^^

Thanks for the list.

In the rulebook the cards with books (the purple ones) are called skill cards and the ones with scrolls (the yellow ones) are called spell cards.

But one card (don't remember what it was) made me lose all my spells which didn't make sense because I would have lost cards that give me skills like "luck +1" or "reroll any combatcheck" if I followed the description in the rulebook (it's somewhere on the first pages, where every tokens, cards and so on which come with the game are described). So I guess it would have to be the other way arround in the rulebook: yellow cards are skill cards and purple cards are spell cards?

What about Sanity, lose any of that partido_risa.gif ? Michael is nice if Ithaqua is GOO or Cthonians are messing about town. Most times I haven't found his ability to be a big deal. If Colour Out of Space (from DH expansion, same as Cthonian, only does Sanity damage instead) is messing about town, I'd hate to have Michael.

Yep, some sanity loss but he never was insane.

Overall it was a pretty lucky game and although it didn't look very good after a while (the terror level got very high and lots of monsters were on the board and most of the time five open gates) we never really were in danger and in the end we could close the gates very very fast, because of many clues, "finding gate" spell, choosing other world cards with one character (forgot the name) and a card that allowed us to seal gates with just three clues (which stayed on the board for a very long time).

I guess Michael is not overpowered in general but in this particular game his abbility was very lucky to have and made playing him very easy....and kinda boring...

Don't have a expansion yet but because the last games were very easy and I always won with sealing six gates it got boring and I didn't play for a while.

So I thought about getting DH but wanted to play it normal again to remeber the rules which seemed to not have worked very well (getting old...). ^^

Had to look up so many things, didn't remember how trading works and so on...

But now I'm thinking about getting DH...and a new table... ^^

Ok, Danke. ^^

You spelled that wrong. It's f-l-o-o-r partido_risa.gif !

You serious, diablo ? they really made a mistake on that ? that is unbelievable, and yet, I do believe it, because it is SO like translation. But such a huge mistake... ****... That's unlike german games edition, though. Aah, believe me, there is nothing, absolutely nothing better than original and authentic stuff happy.gif

Yep, seems like they did a mistake like that. ^^

I wouldn't mind the english version but the guys I play with don't understand english that well.

It's not that much of a problem with arkham because it's cooperative but still I wouldn't like to have to translate every item they could buy or every location card they get and so on. And at games where oponents have to keep something secret it just isn't possible so I get the german version if available.

And overall the translations are good and well done.

But you're right, to make such a mistake at the description part of a rule book is kinda big and until you get to a point where this doesn't make sense anymore (trading "skills" for example) you don't think they made one.

Oh, you're right, I just took a look at the german rules, and they really mixed that up. The component overview (40 Zauber / 20 Fertigkeiten), however, is correct.

There are at least two further things which are mistranslated in the German edition:

  • On the Ithaqua sheet, you read "Gefecht" (combat), which is wrong. You have to make a "Kampfprobe" (fight check) against him, so you cannot use weapons.
  • The Necronomicon tells you to discard after use, which would make it worse than certain other tomes. The proper way is to just exhaust it after use, so you can use it again and again, if your sanity allows. ^^

I'm not sure if there's more in the base game. If you get Dunwich Horror, note that the expedition leader can use his special ability once per turn, not once per game. And - not sure if this was mistranslated, too - the entertainer can remove the doom token (Verderbensmarker) only once per game, not once per turn.gran_risa.gif

If you want to know more, read the German F.A.Q.: http://hds-fantasy.de/uploads/tx_boardgames/documents/arkham_faq_deu.pdf

...or ask in the forums: http://forum.hds-fantasy.de/viewforum.php?f=19

Thanks.

One Doom token per round would be a boring game. ^^
