IG-88 paint color suggestions

By cubsfan4life, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I would like to use an actual metallic paint for IG-88, not a silver or grey. Any sugggestions?

Are you looking for true metallic or Non Metal Metallic?

im going to prime with a grey, then try a silver dry brush with a little brown mixed in, then a nuln oil wash. add details, scratches, bandoleer and red eyes

Sorry not actual metal in the paint, just want the metallic look.

Then what I did with mine is start with a dark grey. Then do two wash of black. Then I started doing the highlights with a dark grey again and going lighter as I painted shorter and shorter highlights, finishing with a very light grey at the end. I then made a very clear brown wash so that the metal look oxyded, making sure that there was not any accumulation in recesses. A clear black wash at the end helped because I thought he looked a little too clean. Look metalic without being shiny, I'm very satisfied with the end result.

how did you make a brown oxide type wash?

If memory serves me right, I used GW Dark Flesh paint with a very little bit of black, that I diluted a lot.

A good choice for a brown oxide/dirty wash is Citadel Colors Typhus Corrosion. Use a little sparingly until you get a feel for how it flows and the effect it gives. Sorastro's painting guide for the AT-ST shows him using some Typhus Corrosion on that model for a weathering effect. Skip to Stage 5 (about 10 minutes in) to check it out:

That's what I did with my probe droids, but less highlighting and I was really happy with how they turned out.

Personally, I think IG-88 should always look pristine and "new off the factor floor" since it is constantly rebuilding / upgrading itself.

I use Vallejo's paints and GW's shades, but I am sure there is a GW analog for these.

Vallejo has a metallic color called "metal azul" which is basically a dark blue metallic.

1) Prime black.

2) Mix 3 parts black with 1 part dark silver metallic (I use Vallejo's "Oily Steel"). Cover the majority of the model in this color using a "heavy drybrush" technique. Don't need to get into the nooks and crannies, but you want a dark, yet metallic coat on the majority of the figure.

3) Drybrush the "Metal Azul" onto the figure.

4) Go over with a shade of Nuln Oil (GW shade) or some other black shade.

5) Mix 1 part "Oily Steel" and 1 part "Metal Azul", drybrush up the highlights.

6) Pick out some little edges with Oily Steel, but not too much.

7) Color the sensors and doohickeys on IG-88's head with the bright colors of your choice. (Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, etc..)

8) Dullcoat model.

9) Start hunting bounties.

This technique also looks good on the probe droids, but you may want to do a gloss varnish on the large "eye" sensors to give them a mirrored look

I always think the opposite. I always saw him as constantly rebuilding, so oily and with blaster damage. like a rusty can opener. that's how i painted mine

Black>Leadbelcher>Runefang Steel>Nuln Oil>Detail eyes/gun/bandolier and wires on legs>sprayed with a sealer that is a "super matte". The sealer reeeeally dules metallics so he looks metal but not shiney at all.

Hmm...I'm thinking to rust / corrode this bad-boy up, and make him look like hell-on-steel. This droid is suppose to be a scary intimidating bad-bot. So, once I get him (likely soon), I believe that's the route I'm taking.

I'm considering of using Citadels Warplock bronze, then drybrush the upper sides with Necron Compound, wash it with brown/black shade and finally add Humbrol's rush wash partially.

i did a metallic silver then i dry brushed over it with brown and black to make him look more dirty and rusty

I'll post a picture tonight.

My steps:

A) Prime in Black

B) 1-2 coats of Mechanicus Standard Grey All Over Ig-88.

C) 1 Coat of 50/50 Mechanicus Standard Grey and Abaddon Black mix on the gun, at the same time hit his gunstrap/sash with Rhinox Hide

D) Wash entire miniature Nuln Oil

E) Dry brush Leadbelcher really lightly all over IG88

F) Dry brush 50/50 mix of Abaddon Black and Leadbelcher on Gun

G) Drybrush or lightly paint wires with Hashut Copper Citidel layer paint.

H) Rewash with a really light level of Nuln Oil on entire miniature

I) Used Abbadon Black and Mephiston Red to fill in details on the headpiece.
J) Testor's Dullcote the fig to take away the shine

K) Crush all of your enemies in Skirmish with your newly painted IG88 Fig

Heres the IG88 from above he needs a few finishing touches still sorry about the flash.

Here is my IG-88. Used Sorastro's Probe Droid video with the exception of using Hashut Copper for the arms and thigh bands. Wish I could do more to it but I anything else would detract from the current paint job.
