Hot water bending?

By FrozenFlesh, in Star Wars: Armada

All my Tie Fighters look like this: )o(

Has anyone tried the good old method of bending plastic minis?

(Dipping them in hot water until they Arme flexible, bend then, and then put them in cold water)

I did it with descent and tide of iron minis, but the plastic of the SWA minis seems to be more stiff.

Thank you

my ties tend to flare out at the bottom....not really the top. I haven't tried your fix, but might give it a try later.

It works, is what I did/am doing.

I used that trick with Rune Wars and Dust. I am prepared for Armada.

About half mine are bent like that. I may try this.

Also, if you plan to paint them, this will also clean them, so the paint sticks better to the minis. :)

For cleaning, for whatever reason, for the softer plastics, I have added a few drops of vinegar to the water. The paint seems to stick better in my opinion. I did this with all my Rune Wars armies before I painted them.

How hot do you make the water? Like boiling hot, or just out of the tap

No, that doesn't work on these models as they are 'proper' plastic and not resin type, got a nice bend in my Neb-B I can't straighten, not fully painted either :(

That blows ... I tell you with all this talk about crap nebulon b's I'm so glad I bought mine at a Local Gaming Store so I could look first.

Yeah, I do that with my Dust minis but like Major stated it's not the right kind of plastic to use this method.

Hmmm, well, it worked fine for my bent X-Wing lasers.

I, too, have a somewhat droopy Neb-B that I was intending to try this with. Sucks to hear it might not work, but I'm going to give it a shot anyway since there's nothing to lose by trying.

Almost boiling hot. The hotter it is, the faster it works. But put them out quick, until you figured out how long it takes. And only put parts of the mini you want to bend in the water.

Water bending? Wrong storyline fellas.

Just joking.

Someone in another thread reported they had a bent Neb-b. They contacted FFG support, said FFG dropped a replacement in the mail immediately.

Just to be clear, this WILL work on the fighters. I had the same problem with bendy ties, I put got a little bowl of recently boiled water cooled with a little cold tap water, so it was hot but not burning me hot, dropped them in for literally 10 seconds and they come out very soft and easy to straighten up.

edit - but yes I do expect it wouldnt work on the ships, I think they are a different material

It sorta works. Normally the hot water allows the model to immediately reshape itself to the original mold. Here, you'll need to apply pressure to reshape. Once happy with the reshaping, drop in cold water to fix it's shape.

Some of mine are still slightly warped, but look fine once painted.

Ive never seen heating a model up to make it magically retake its "as designed" shape, it always needs to be manually move back to the right place in my experience...

I will also add that the models are so tiny that they had cooled enough to be hard again within ten seconds or so just through air convection and my hands, so I had to reheat a few to get them as i wanted them.

The trick I found with the ties was to apply pressure only to the centre of the opposite wing whist trying to straighten the opposite side

I did it today, and it worked really good. I did one wing first, and then the other. Now all ties are in perfect shape, and ready for painting!

Try using a blow dryer with hot/cold setting. First you heat up the bent section (watch your fingers), then you move it into shape, then you pour on the cold.

Works like a charm. :)
