Asymmetrical Droids

By Eruletho, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been toying with various IG-88 builds, both symmetrical and not, and feel like an asymmetrical list that plays to each individual droid's strengths ends up better than one with the same upgrades on both, especially if each one is really strong on their own. For example:

IG-88 B

-Autothrusters

-Mangler Cannon

-Sensor Jammer

-Predator

IG-88 C

-Autothrusters

-Advanced Sensors

-Heavy Laser Cannon

-Push the Limit

In this set-up, B is a tough ship to kill on his own with the sensor jammer adding to autothrusters, and his attacks reliably hit between predator and his built-in gunner effect. C is also really hard to kill, since he can boost before he moves to get an evade, and PTL into a focus, then clear the stress with a green maneuver; and he also hits like a mack truck with the HLC, normally aided by a focus. While both are alive, B can boost for added survivability and rely on Predator to make the attacks land, and C can sling attacks a little more reliably with the build-in gunner (though the HLC probably won't be triggering it much.)

Thoughts on the above in specific, or on asymmetrical vs symmetrical in general?

I like the idea of asymmetrical idea of IGs on principle. I have a real hard time running net lists and mirrored robots seems way more common and it's less interesting to me.

That predator/sensor jammer combo was one I've wanted to try as well, and that only reinforced my desire to run them asymmetrically since I only have one copy if each of those cards.

I like it. Run it and report back!

I played this list the other night, I can't for the lift of me remember what my buddy flew against it, but at the end of the game I had lost 1 shield on each droid. It was positively brutal. Sensor Jammer did some serious work.

[EDIT: Just remembered most of my opponent's squad:

Guri (Virago, Advanced Sensors, something else)

3x Cartel Spacer (Heavy Scyk, Mangler Cannon)

I plugged one of the cartels in the first turn for 2 damage, didn't take anything in return from all 4 on IG-B (sensor jammer FTW), from then on it was one dead enemy ship per turn until he pulled the last Syck off. One lucky shot from a mangler got through on B, and C took a single hit from a range 1 Guri shot.)
