Armada is one of the best games I have ever played

I finished another game last night, and each time I play I find something new where I think the game design is truly excellent.

The command dials really force a lot of thinking, and when you reveal that concentrate fire command right at the exact time you need it, it feels really good. But, since you can (usually) take a token instead, if you guess wrong, it won't cost you the game. The struggle to stay in a superior position to your opponent is INTENSE. I get anxious over whether I can take Repair, or if I'll need to Navigate to avoid being shot down. Fighters, too, feel really fast and dynamic compared to the relative clunkiness of the larger ships.

And I think that's what's really great about the game, and that FFG does a great job of capturing: the game feels like a big starship battle. Maybe with the release of Wave 1, fleet building will be a lot more interesting, and a deep metagame will develop, but for right now, I'm having a blast just throwing ships and fighters around a star field while they trade fire.

I'm glad to hear you say that. I was worried that the command dials wouldn't add enough of that forward thinking tacticallness (which is such a huge (and brilliant) part of X-Wing in the form of setting your movement dial).

Anyway, shut up and go away - don't you know I haven't got mine yet? :@ (@mods - this is a joke, I'm not really telling him to shut up and go away)

I like to think of this as a resource management game and damage is the resource. Those dice are so mean but the game is about how to mitigate them. You can't just hope your opponent rolls poorly. You have to expect big hits and it's down to how best to use your defenses, maneuver to avoid it or how to recover from it. It's so interesting and fun. It's the chess to X-wing's checkers.

I have to say you need a LOT more forward thinking than X-Wing, simply because you have to think multiple turns in advance. It's pretty nuts.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say Armada players are much smarter and more forward thinking than X-Wing players.

Probably a lot prettier, too.

Awesome, I'm very glad it requires so much planning :)

I suspect on the Venn Diagram of X-Wing and Armada players, the number who play the latter and not the former is a pretty small slice of the Armada circle, so on average the aesthetic advantage cannot be great. Not saying it's impossible, mind you, certainly not if the people I play X-Wing are anything to go by...

Got the game last night, and I love it. In like it even more than X-Wing (and I like X-Wing alot). Så hat off to FFG for creating some excellent games. :D

Now get Wave 1 and Wave to to the stores, already. :D

I agree this is one of the best games I've played and I've been playing games like axis and allies and squad leader since the early 80's.

I love most of all the split between ships and squadrons

in X-wing, the large ships don't feel special, they just feel like small ships that ate too much. In Armada, the differences are drastic and the unique interactions between the two (Both in terms of damage and in the Squadron command) leads to some great interactions and incredibly engaging decisions to be made, all the while stressing the importance of your fleet's formation

Just an FYI that I play X Wing and Armada, and I am pretty. I'm also not gonna die. You know why? Because I am so... very... pretty. I am just too pretty for God to let me die. Huh? Look at that chiseled jaw!

okbutsrs, too soon for me to tell if it's the best game ever, since I actually need to, ya know, play against another human being and all, but so far it's very good.

It is fast becoming my favourite too. Playing my second 300 pt game tomorrow - every game I play I enjoy more than the last, so tomorrow should be awesome :)

Wait, does that mean I'm smarter and prettier than myself?

**** I'm good!

It also means you're the ugly, thick version of yourself. Loser.

I've played half a dozen matches with just 189 points and it hasn't come close to losing its charm. I've been thinking about playing it while at work and I'm checking FFG front page for updates and checking the forums every few hours.

I'm in the same boat! I can't wait for the Wave 2 announcement, get some more details on what's coming out.

I have spent hours at work whistling the Imperial March... My co-workers think I am nuts. I have only played 3 games, and have not thought of much else since the last game 3 days ago.

You're not nuts, you're patriotic!

Totally agreed. The game is awesome.

Shiney. I'm still trying to decide if I want to buy in (I do wish it was a little cheaper) but I'm leaning towards it now.

Well, the goodies that come in one core are totally worth it. Two cores not so much, because the extra squadrons probably wouldn't be required, but i am amazed with the love everything seems to have been constructed (the bases for example).

Yeah. The game components are really well engineered. The overall production standard is very high.

And the fun is off the charts :D
