Armada Epic play

By stuh42asl, in Star Wars: Armada

Armada is just screaming for massive fleets. I have three core sets now with two more on the way, plus the add on kits

which I will be getting in the near future. My goal is for 2000-3000pts per side with actual mission and campaign objectives......300pts is way to small and yes it is okay to enter in tourneys but a 4 x 8 table filled with asteroid fields

and ships plus a planet or two and players who actually" play the game", that is my goal. This system will allow for actual squadrons of capital ships, fighter wings that can be deployed. Go big or go home. Tourneys have no appeal for me,

unless of course FFG allows for 1000 pt games then maybe that could be arranged. So are there like minded people out there????

Problem with games that large is ships will just get alpha'ed and destroyed before doing anything. So you spent money and time to set a mini on the table to just pick it up and set it aside.

I have three core sets now with two more on the way,

Oh man, I wish I had that kind of disposable income!

We are already planning a missive battle of 3v3. We will start with ~1000 points per team which after a while may go up. The teams will be devided into a grand admiral, CAG, and strike force commander. The grand admiral will play the capital ships and flagship as well as be the architect of overall strategy. The CAG will report to the G.A. And will control all fighter squadrons. The strike force commander will also report to the G.A. And will be in charge of the frigate/corvette picket/QRF.

So in essence the grand admiral will take advice from his team as well as issue orders ("like cover the right flank" or "provide a fighter screen for that ship") and it would be the CAG/commanders job to figure out what ships to send where to support the overall strategy. An actual chain of command.

We have already discussed larger fleet games. It just seems like fun here and there. I would say it would require multiple players to get the true feel for it.

For some reason I feel like time would be a huge factor here...opinions or experience here? I don't want to play a 9 hour game.

Definitely will never happen for a tournament. It would take way too long and take up too much space. That being said it could be fun if you can leave it set up some place for several weeks and play it out over that time.

@ Moodydoody..

In my experience fleet battle games where you try and have a "Grand Admiral", "Operations Officers" and whatever tend to be a mess. I have had more success with groups where we divvy up resources and fight over objectives on a map. More akin to a "Border Princes" campaign if you will. Still, if this game lends itself to the model you described above, I would be very much interested in your feedback.

I'll be sure to let you know how it works out. I think player personality will be a large factor in if it works well or not. It will be interesting either way I think.

I have played many large fleet games over my many years of gaming experience. You have two sides that can muster sizeable fleets, So why not

real fleet engagements. And yes capital ships will get hammered but that is war. 300pts are great if it is a quick game. I am almost 50 years old now and can't stand huge crowds like I have seen at the tourneys. I spend much time studying history and I am a Star wars nut as well. So I consider this the big league, with huge numbers of "toys" . So if you lot like to experience a real game and are none to shy about spending a Sunday in a gaming store then a fleet engagement is a must. If you can muster up 4 or more friends and get a good point base, don't really concentrate on boosting up your ships, just get the max number you can with an admiral and squadron commanders. Then select a real mission not some weak knee'd idea where each player battles over several objectives that are placed at random like flames of War etc. Now spend time researching and planning

say a two or three stage planetary invasion, or blockade running. As I said you really want to learn how to "play". Don't select a few ships that are hopped up on cards and gizmos set up true squadrons with average stats and crews, set real orders for each squadron and then stick to them.

Yeah the company says you can only have 300pts per side hoorah................. :( about as much fun as watching paint dry. Have tourney with 1000pt limits , so what if you can play 2 or 3 game a day. Think for yourselves and enjoy a real game.

That's only for Wave 1 tournaments. Once Wave 2 comes out, the point limit will be 400. Of course, no one is preventing you from playing whatever point levels you wish. No need to be rude.

Sorry not being rude..........had a bad experience with a group only way they would play was a set limit which never changed, rude players, and

competition that ended up in a bad environment etc.I Iike a game with meaning, comraderie and a good sense of sportsmanship. I hate games where you bring your _____pts and I bring mine and we beat each other senseless.

I could see "epic" games as more of a dungeon crawl. One side played by a DM/GM with a lot of fleet point and a good narative at their disposal. The other side commanded by two or three players, leveling up and buying upgrades or warping in reinforcements as they progress.
