Getting People to Play...

By sgtkneecaps, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hey everyone. I know I haven't been around in awhile, and that's because - well - I haven't been able to play Arkham :c

Its hard getting everyone mobilized to play! I've done solo's but its not as fun.

I've also been working on my thesis sure, but, I do have free time and its such a long game. What do you guys do to encourage people to play a game instead of just slouching in front of the TV? I'm thinking of getting Eldersign, which is shorter and similar. Maybe playing shorter games more often will make people more likely to want to play a longer game?

You could also consider burn their tellies.

But, if you can resist the luddite temptation, then, yes, go with something shorter. And try to understand what your friends didn't like in the Arkham experience: if it's only the length of the game, or something else.

You could also try Eldritch horror: it's quicker, more streamlined and while it has a ton of tokens and cards it's nowhere near as much components as arkham.

How about having each player control two (or more) investigators?

It really is the length of the game, I feel. We always opt to play pandemic or a shorter game instead when I'm voting for Arkham. We're talking about having game nights too, so hopefully setting aside the day is a good idea.

Still, its hard because I love playing so much and don't mind sinking the 2 hours or so into the game, and its getting harder because we don't play that often anymore, so now its harder for them to remember the rules. :I

That's something I really never understood. My Arkham games last 75 to 90 minutes max; with Eldritch, it's usually a minimum of 180 minutes. There should be something wrong in the way I play the latter...

Well, if it's only the length, then, yep, Elder Sign could be a good alternate solution. Just beware that the core game is rather on the easy side, you possibly need to expand it to bring up the difficulty and keep the game challenging

Try moving to my neighborhood. :) or, have you tried hypnosis? If you turn the Terror Level up to 11....

It sucks when you love Arkham but the non-fanatics around you don't want to get into a long game. I feel for you.

I do like Elder Sign as a quick fix, especially with the Gates of Arkham expansion, which in my opinion is a must buy. With the expansion, it really does have an "Arkham Lite" type of feel, and you can play in as little as 45 to 60 minutes, so it can hit the table more often than its bulkier cousins. For me, both Arkham and Eldritch both take about 2-3 hours, depending on how many humans are playing.

Sometimes though, nothing else but Arkham is going to scratch that itch. Question: It may not be quite what you are looking for, but would you be interested in play by forum? I've run several of them for me and a couple of friends. You can find the threads in the forums on BGG.

I WOULD LOVE to play by forum. I think that would be so much fun. And it does suck because all my geek friends are online (I moved) so its hard to coordinate something like that.

I think elder sign might get them in the mood maybe? But I don't want to overwhelm them... yeah they are NOT gamers usually haha

Do you have an account at boardgamegeek.com? If you do, send me a PM there. If you don't already have an account there, you might want to create one. My username there is the same as here.

Okay I'll get right on that thanks! *sorry for the later reply*

You know what. I had a better solution. I asked for mansions of madness for my birthday. Now Arkham won't seem so bad !!! LOL
