R7 Astromech question

By SirEmilCrane, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi

At what point does the R7 Astromech force the attacker to re-roll dice? Is it before or after the defender rolls defense dice, or eve some time during the attacking step?

Sorry if this question has been asked before, I looked through about five pages of the forum before posting

In any case when you modify dice it goes like this.

Attacker rolls dice>defender may modify those dice>attacker may modify those dice

Defender rolls dice>attacker may modify those dice>defender may modify those dice

Or, if you roll the dice you get the final chance to modify. I hope I wrote that clearly. peace

Before.

The steps are...

Attacker rolls attack dice

Defender modifies attack dice

Attacker modifies attack dice

Defender rolls defense dice

Attacker modifies defense dice

Defender modifies defense dice

So you'd use R7 in the 'Defender modifies attack dice' step. That means the attacker could use a TL to reroll any dice that R7 didn't reroll.

Ok cool, that makes a bit more sense, thanks guys

I wish Adv. Targeting Computer wasn't TIE Advanced only. How cool would it be to have an E-Wing with the computer and R7?

I love E wings so I would be all over that, would probably replace FCS as my go to corran upgrade

While the attacker can not reroll any dice that R7 rolled he can modify the dice in other ways. If you use R7 and roll a [boom] [kaboom] into [blank] [eye] your opponent could still spend a focus token to convert the [eye] into a [boom] and may even have things that modify the [blank] which could eventually make it good.

don't forget any dice that has already been rerolled cannot be rerolled again. So lets just say Tar-7 (Tarn w/R-7) is defending against 4 dice. 3 hits and a blank were rolled, Tarn may spend the target lock to re-roll 3 hits and leave the blank or may chose to reroll all dice. If Tarn chooses to re-roll just the hits then the attacker may use a TL to roll the 1 blank. IF Tarn chooses to reroll all dice the attacker cannot spend the target lock to reroll any dice.

Why is that? I've never really understood why dice can only be rerolled once.

Because the rules say so, pretty much. It's somewhere in the core rulebook, I'm sure someone can provide the reference.

I believe that's what I said...

As was said above, because the rules say so.

From the sidebar on page 12.

a die that has already been rerolled cannot be rerolled again during this attack.

As in, why is that the way they created the game? Because it makes things so much simpler. That way I can't stack 3 reroll abilities and just keep rerolling until I get the result I want. The game takes long enough without making dice rolling take longer.

Also, if I use R7 to reroll your hits and get some blanks, and you were able to just use a TL to reroll those blanks, then that would make R7 pretty lame.

I've got no idea why you'd want to reroll an enemy's [blank] attacks for them but I guess R7 can do that. There's some question about rerolling [eye] results when they are sitting on a Focus but I'd rather let them use their own abilities to turn a [blank] into something that is not a [blank] 75% of the time.

Alright then. Thank you for the clarification regarding re-rolling dice.

I appreciate it.

It was more for scenario sake to explain the reroll rules. True probability wise you would not want to reroll blanks even if the attacker had a target lock. It is better to force them to spend the target lock on that one dice and hope for an evade result then to give them a free hit and they keep the target lock. However R7 astromech allows the defender to reroll any dice the defender wants. So if the defender wants to reroll blank or focus results the defender may do that even if it means a higher chance of getting hit.
