Engineering Too Strong in Core Only?

I get that. If the opponent has his own core set you could just borrow his corvette. Once wave one drops fighters will mean a lot more with effective bombers and 300 points means there can be a meaningful amount of them. Not to mention a better ability to focus fire
If he is stacking Engineering he isn't using Squadron commands, so I'd personally keep my X-Wings together, jump his TIE Squadrons (depending on initiative of course) and once they have been reduced in threat (usually goes super fast if I have the initiative), then spread out and commence bombing runs on the SD.
I find those crits to be well, critical, when assisting the small Rebel ships.

When people are talking about stacking engineering commands they are taking about in the later rounds. You still have Rds 2-3, maybe even 4, to take other Commands such as the Squadron CommandIf he is stacking Engineering he isn't using Squadron commands, so I'd personally keep my X-Wings together, jump his TIE Squadrons (depending on initiative of course) and once they have been reduced in threat (usually goes super fast if I have the initiative), then spread out and commence bombing runs on the SD.

This is the issue. My opening Commands with the VSD are usually something along the lines of Navigate->Squadrons->Concentrate Firepower. After I see how turn one is shaping up, I'll either go Concentrate or Engineering depending on what my opponent's ships did. If they are running away, then Concentrate. If they are attacking, I'll go engineering. You can play a bit of a cat and mouse game, but no matter what you will typically go full-on engineering from then on.
The thing that makes it weirder/more powerful still is the Dominator title, since if you have it you can then basically start spamming Engineering turn 3 and just using your shields as pseudo-Concentrate Fire Commands and then just heal them back up. If you start getting low, just stop using the title =).
I'm going to try 3 Rebel Ships ad I actually think that has a better chance of getting the kill presently then 4 X-Wings. Simply due to expected attrition/delay and lack of force multiplier upgrades coming in Wave 1.
