BBBBZ: Tourney Report

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing

Played in a really fun event this weekend at the MM retail store in St Louis. Great event with pizza provided and over $100 of scum ships as prizes all for a $5 entry fee. I had never played in a competitive setting before so I went with the simplest of lists, BBBBZ.

Out of around 30 entrants, I managed third place and scored a shiny new Scyk as well as some alt-art cards. The event was only three rounds with pairings based on record and MoV. Tabled my first two opponents and lost a close one at time in round three.

BBBBZ is a strong (if boring) tourney list. I debated Adv Sensors or Acc Corrector in place of the Z but the old Z-95 seems like the way to go. The Z-95 doesn't attract a great deal of fire and can supply an extra arc when trying to pin down a slippery foe. The lack of control from this list could really hurt against someone who plans on taking out one ship and then running away until time is called but throwing down a list with 36 hit points and 14 red dice can intimidate a lot of lists.

Round 1

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Sensor Jammer (4)
Ion Cannon (3)
Weapons Engineer (3)
ST-321 (3)
Colonel Vessery (35)
Predator (3)
Cluster Missiles (4)
Academy Pilot (12) X2
Opponent (Paul I think) lined up his AP's and shuttle to joust with my entire list along the edge of the board with Vessery as flanker. I screwed up and target locked the shuttle with a couple of my ships and both my opponent and I rolled lots of blank red dice so everyone managed to limp away from the initial exchange. Exchanged the Z for an AP and then a long range exchange managed to drop the shuttle with a direct hit coup-de-grace. Vessery died the following turn after losing one B-wing leaving an AP vs three untouched blue squadrons. Opponent conceded for a 100-34 win.
Round 2

Dash Rendar (36)
Push the Limit (3)
"Mangler" Cannon (4)
Kyle Katarn (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Outrider (5)
Corran Horn (35)
Fire-Control System (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Opponent (Tim) tried to dodge through the asteroids but I managed to keep a pretty good spread of firing arcs and Corran never really found an opening. Dash dropped some pretty good damage as about half my list focused him down. By the time Corran got in the fight for real, I had Dash on the ropes and my Z-95 ended up being the MVP of the match dropping the final damage on both Dash and Corran. Lost a couple B-wings before the curtain for a 100-44 win.
Round 3

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (46)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Ysanne Isard (4)
Darth Vader (3)
Gunner (5)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Mara Jade (3)
Tactical Jammer (1)
Academy Pilot (12)
This list belonged to my friend who invited up to the event. He was also 2-0 at this point so the only good news was that one of us would go undefeated. The bad news was that with our tankey lists, neither one of us was likely to table the other in the time provided. I set up along one side of the board opposite the AP. He managed to aim his two large ships through an alley in the asteroid field. He turned his AP away at the beginning and I tried to turn and meet him in the midst of the rocks. His Decimator made a nice turn to the outside and started running around the edge of the board. I was able to drop the shuttle in the second round of shooting before Mara Jade did too much mischief. His Decimator ended up at range 1 of an injured B-wing and rolled 1 hit. Of course I manage to roll an evade triggering gunner and his second roll brings the B-wing down to 2 hull. Vader drops a crit and of course it is the dreaded direct hit depriving me of a four dice attack. After some pretty good flying on both sides, time is called with three hull points left on the Decimator. Result 25-44 loss.
Michael walked away with a Starviper and second place. I took home third place and a third Scyk for my scum fleet. A great experience and I want to thank MM for putting on a really nice event. They certainly didn't make any money on our entry fees after the prizes and pizza. Of course, they probably sold a fair bit of product to the participants but getting internet prices with no delivery or wait is almost magical in itself. Best (or worst) of all, I managed to find the willpower to walk out without buying a copy of Armada...

Good report and congrates. You should post it in the actual bat rep sub forum, though. :)

I'm bit low on Bs, got only 1 :D could something like BXXXA with refit work as well as this?

Out of curiosity, how much health did you have left on your 2 B-wings and Z-95?

Z was untouched. One B was down to 2 hull IIRC because he had gotten the PS zero crit. The other B was untouched I believe. If the game played to completion it would have been very close.

Just a little bit of information for future Tournaments. If your opponent wants to concede, they are agreeing to a complete loss, meaning they get zero points destroyed and you get 100 points destroyed (i.e. 200 MOV score for that round). That could have been how the TO was scoring points, so you never know.

Yup, got to kill that big ship, otherwise you pretty much automatically lose in a timed match. If there were partial points you would actually have been ahead 76 - 60 at that point, assuming his TIE was at full health.

That is not correct.

Conceding is equivalent hitting an auto-destruct button on all your ships.

It does not affect how many points you destroyed before conceding and does not automatically give your opponent an MoV of 200.

If I am playing someone and destroyed 67 points, but am down to 2 injured Academy Pilots against an untouched Bounty Hunter and I concede, I will have destroyed 67 points and my opponent will have destroyed 100 points. This gives me an MoV of 67 and my opponent an MoV of 133.

For reference, the Tournament Rules state: "If a player concedes the match, treat all of his remaining ships as destroyed."

There is no mention of them giving up the points they destroyed before conceding.

You've got to kill that big ship to win a timed match or an untimed match. ;)

Kidding aside, do you know what your last game's opponent's MOV before you played him? I was at that tournament on the other undefeated table, and I had heard he'd been doing well (he also beat the 4th place player if I remember correctly).

Yes but in an untimed match the optimal way to achieve this is frequently to go after the surrounding ships first. Unless your opponent plants the Fat Ship at range 1 of your entire fleet, then it is a no-brainer decision. In a timed match the Fat Ship can stay at range and play keep-away, drastically increasing the effectiveness of the support ships. There is actually some underlying math here that points to a higher squad-level jousting efficiency if you have a Fat ship in a timed match.

That is in addition to whether or not it is "fair" to get Admiral or Han down to 1HP and lose MoV and the match outright on time because he killed a single Z-95 or TIE Fighter.

I understand. It was a joke, but a bad one I suppose. I think half points for half damage might be okay in the game, but that's not really a discussion for this thread.

Ha ha, yeah. The shortest path being a straight line theory doesn't always work in timed matches.
