Have you Homebrewed your own Planet, City or Species yet?

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Have you homebrewed anything big in your version of the Galaxy yet, like a planet, city or species? Or maybe something smaller, like a new and interesting type of droid or ship?

Or have you homebrewed the whole Galaxy and rewritten Star Wars history? A homebrew sector ot era perhaps?

Well, my character is a homebrewed droid.

The BS7-series Media/Group Relations droid from Cybot Galactica was the seventh in a line of high end model of class three droids aimed at the corporate and government market. The line was originally designed to fill the role of spokesperson or media interference for groups that found themselves overburdened with questions. These design specification meant considerable effort and processing power went into the unit’s speaking and ‘life like’ non-verbal communication efforts. Wide range translators and cultural databases were considered extraneous for the base model, who’s expected interactions would be limited to their owner’s primary culture and language. The BS7, as with every model after BS3, comes with two “expansion slots” in the chest area for unit customization.

The BS7, like the rest of the line, sold as well as could be expected within its limited field for the first few years. Sales dipped later, however, when news broke that a glitch in the ethics interpretation system would cause the droids on more “liberal” settings to argue passionately and rather successfully for their own emancipation. Cybot Galactica rushed out a firmware patch for this issue, but sales never completely recovered. The situation did, however, see a number of emancipated BS7s among civilized planets, where they have found work in hospitality, news anchors and, in the case of one pair, an extensive and award winning music career.

I've also used a few custom planets, but like so many in Star Wars, they're not really fleshed out except the specific location the players land in. "A civilized, terrestrial planet with a population in the low billions. Your at a major spaceport in a good sized city..." Things like that.

My players crash-landed on a planet called Luma in the Unknown Regions and met the indigenous natives:

The planet is mainly salt flats. I saw a cool picture of a salt flat and decided to make a planet like that. The natives are bright yellow aliens with four arms and a little head stump instead of a full head.

After they left Luma, my plan was for them to land on a civilized planet in the Unknown Regions called Elo'oo.

The natives of Elo'oo would be distantly related to Chiss and other humanoid species, but they would communicate entirely through a melodic and harmonic language which sounded like they were singing all the time. When multiple Elo'oo speak at the same time, they end up harmonizing with each other. Someone raising a voice of dissent would be in disharmony.

Our campaign was put on hiatus but I still hope to make use of this planet sometime.

Oh, I also featured a planet called Kalandra, near Hutt Space:

Kalandra and its capital city are mostly canals, and there's a high proportion of aquatic races there. Narratively it was inspired by Casablanca, from the film, being a way station for refugees trying to escape the Empire. An Imperial moff was on the planet trying to crack down on Rebels.

Oh, and a retired Cad Bane is the "Rick" of the Casablanca scenario, running a cantina under an assumed name while pining for his lost wife. (The wife turned out to have left him because she was possessed by an ancient Sith spirit and went to the planet Luma to build a massive temple that would destroy the Galaxy.)

I've homebrewed a handful of locations... I can find the write-ups on them at home.

Doradol, private Ord Mantell spaceport city. Relatively civilized, site of much past Black Sun activity. Most major Black Sun players here were run out of business by the then up-and-coming entrepreneur Avery Simril (former smuggler, gambler, and self-styled duelist). This was the site of one of our earlier and largest-scale adventures (our early Ord Mantell saga is a legend of our table).

Pavaro, a small backwater town in the middle of the swamp on Cartao. The only reason for its existence is the Imperial research facility established there to observe local flora and fauna - the outpost attracted a few private businesses and settlers and formed a small town. After Imperial bureaucracy lost interest in the outpost, civilization declined to the whims of the desperate and swoop gangers.

Amber Base, a small rebel forward position on Taanab, valued for its strategic position on the Perlemian trade route. Amber Base plays host to Amber Squadron, a mixed X-Wing/Y-Wing unit, a platoon of Alliance Army troopers, and a squad of SpecForce commandos. The base is located out in the wilderness near the plains of Taanab, kilos and kilos away from the nearest agrarian settlement. Most of the structure itself is built under a large hillside, one of many that rests by a lake. The main hangar door is on the edge of the lake - it is a common (and beautiful) sight to see starfighters spray water as they come in to land. (Inspiration taken from the Force Awakens trailer, of course). Our party's Nautolan Emergent tends to meditate in the lake - quite serene, if you ask me.

Myself and former poster Cyril (along with a couple other folks) created homebrew stats for a plethora of species in the Unofficial Species Menagerie, with the bulk of them written prior to the EotE core rulebook being published, much less any of the supplements that would demonstrate just how far out of the box that the FFG writers would go in designing various species.

There's a link to in the Resources thread, though I don't think the initial post has been updated to contain the proper link now that the Gamer Security Agency website has been taken down.

Have I built planets and species? Not so much in EotE (or at least nothing online), but I built plenty under the D6 engine. Anything from a whole sector to just some planets. I find that games with a handful of well fleshed out planets - about 10 or so - and a pretty solid selection of NPCs and some interesting locations and features work better than just randomly flitting about the galaxy.

Mind you've we've done that too - we'll have games on the other side of the galaxy, but somewhere to come back to and call home gives the game some weight.

Oh hell yes.

Vestare - home of the creeping carpet. A extremely fast growing grass that will latch on and grow over anything in less than an hour. The only outposts are the stilt stations. Huge tripod like stations, equipped with plasma rings that fire down the legs to burn off and scorch the grass off them.

The reason this dangerous planet is colonized is deep underground, protected from the carpet is a source of spaceship fuel.

The baron administrator of this world, Simeon Boleo, has standing orders, and maintains a large private fleet and communication satellites, that any ship that lands and tried to take off rather than dock at a stilt station, will be destroyed to prevent the 'creeping carpet' from spreading across the Galaxy. While not a bad person, he is cutthroat about his mandate. It is talked about that Simeon Boleo has asked the empire to set up a Garrison for the greater good and help prevent the spread.

There is also a somewhat large population of Ithorians who wish to study and care for the world.

Also :

In the sector of space I run my games in, thers is a common saying when things don't go as planned or turn from bad to worse: when the fit hits the Shan.

Shans are large, easily spooked herbivores that or prone to violent and erratic outbursts of destruction. Picture a land dwelling, armoured furry Hippopotamus. If you are award of the death toll of our earth hippos imagine them with armour and aggression 'turned up to 11'.

These are just a few of the things in the Ghallo sector. Rumours also abound that the ancient Duros cargo ship, Gatzfireld Dnumde is lost in the dangerous nebula known as the Witch of Novem. The nebula has ion storms that will fry any ships systems. But the full cargo holds draw people to look the ancient ship. Perhaps the Duros pilot, Kavis Foon, who swears he knows where the ship is, can be convinced to go into the Witch of Novem to find the Gatzfireld Dnumde.

A replacement for the Wheel called the Yirt. A derelict Venator cruiser severely damaged and thought destroyed during the last days of the Clone Wars. It's now a semi-shadowport with a unique history and a few aged crew and their descendants still aboard, not just the scavengers and miners who have moved in to call it their home. 11-page history and details below:
