If you're building your own fleet, do you *have* to pay the 38 points for Tarkin? (or 20 for Dodo?) I know you have to identify a flagship, but must you use a Fleet Commander? I really don't want to pay for Tarkin.
Do you have to use a Fleet Commander
You must have a Commander. However, Tarkin is awesome, so you should totally be ok paying for him.
Yes. For a ship to be a flagship, it must be equipped with a commander, so buying a commander is mandatory.
Edited by kerokoI'm pretty sure you do.
On page 6 of the rules reference guide it defines a flagship as "a ship equipped with a commander card."
Ergo, no commander, no flag ship, which violates the 4th bullet point under the fleet building section on the same page.
I agree that he's awesome. But he's obviously more awesome when you have more ships deployed. So if, for example, you're only playing a 180 pt. game, it kind of sucks to pay 38 points for only 1 ship to benefit.
Also, is the fleet commander deployed to and only effects a single ship? (Unless the card reads otherwise) (And thus, he is killed if that ship is destroyed)
So for example, Dodonna's ability is only triggered from attacks from the ship he is on, right? or does it kick-in when any ship in the rebel fleet deals a faceup damage card?
Tarkin is amazing.
Commander abilities affect ALL friendly ships unless otherwise stated. They really come into their own in 300+ point games.
Commanders affect all ships.
In the core set Tarkin specifically says "each friendly ship..."
Dodanna affects all attacks, even the ones from the x-wings to the victory. (Which was awesome when luke's crit landed)
When the flagship is destroyed, the upgrades associated with it are inactive, which includes the commanders. (Under "destroyed" in the RRG) An inactive commander will no longer affect the rest of the battlefield.
Tarkin is great for helping to mitigate that 3 command stack or adding tokens for a liason/Wulff to work with. He'll be even better with a second ship to boost.
PG 22 of the L2P guide is also specific on the requirement of a Commander.
Yeah Tarkin is legit, no doubt. I played a game last night, 300 pts. with two Vic-1s, both armed with missiles, hangar bay and gunnery team. Thanks to Tarkin, you can go straight in at speed 2 and have enough tokens for when you engage.
Rebs did not have enough time to scurry out of my front arc...and let me tell you that what those two Vic-1s did with black dice was pretty **** rude. Vic-1's are brawlers, that's for sure.
Are you sure Dodonna effects star fighters as well as ships? I was under the impression that ships were a very specific, "capital" category versus the star fighters.

The final version of Dodonna says nothing about the damage coming from ships. It even triggers from asteroid collisions.
You also have the option of proxying a different Commander in casual play if your opponent let's you. We now of a couple more, and even if they change in the final printing, you could use their current rules (obviously if your opponent agrees, which seems reasonable considering that Tarkin shines so strongly across a whole fleet.)

So we're talking about "General Dodonna" here? Which Clearly states when a friendly "ship" is attacking.... Ship = capital ships/big stuff and squadrons = fighters ?
Or have I missed a card some where?
Edited by NefferDodonna changed between the spoilers and print. No more ship reference.

O so I see I had to go Look in the box. I've only played 5 games so far and as the Imperials. Thats an odd last minute change?
I also think they may have increase the number of damage cards you look at as well when his ability triggers. Didn't it used to be 3? Or am I confusing him with Marek Steele?

Nope, you're right. It used to be 3. And he was MORE expensive than he is now.
