Opposing Chaos Gods

By LucienLandau, in Dark Heresy

Has anyone noticed that they're wrong? (pg. 241)

Khorne opposes Slaanesh? Since when?

For my entire gaming life, Khorne has hated TZEENTCH, and gone to great lengths to protect himself and his devoted warriors against magic. Slaanesh is opposed to Nurgle (as you'd expect - the last thing the God of Pleasure wants to see is a fat, smelly blob of puss).

I know it changes very little in the game, but it's just weird that this error got through to the published volume...

In my mind, it's always been Tzeench and Slaanesh vs Khorne and Nurgle. But yeah, that is odd....But to my mind, they simply chose the other nemesis :P

It's not a mistake nor and error. It has been this way since the old Realms of Chaos books.

Slaanesh has always had a special hatred for Khorne. In Slaves to Darkness [pg. 16], Slaanesh who's "...particular enemies are the followers of Khorne, whose belief in pain and death is completely opposed to Slaanesh's principle of a life of unrestricted pleasure." It goes on to state that the "...followers of Nurgle and Tzeentch, the other two Powers of Chaos, are subject to Slaanesh's usual neutral attitude." On pg 17, when giving the breif low-down on Khorne, it goes on to state that "the two Powers [Khorne and Slaanesh] personify entirely opposing concepts of the nature of Chaos."

The other Realms of Chaos book states similar things about Tzeentch and Nurgle's relationship. So, it has been that way since the by-gone days of 1988 or so.

Edit: I believe the the dynamic of the four Powers were set as they are based on the ideas of Life vs Death (Slaanesh vs Khorne) and Change vs Stagnation (Tzeentch vs Nurgle). Although I would agree that it doesn't quite sync up with the who and what the Powers are. Take Nurgle who seems to really enjoy a good bit of rot and entropy which,m when looking at it in an alchemical way, purification was seen as the ultimate symbol of change as it is a alteration in the state of mater as well as the ultimate symbol for the changing of life to death.

Now that you mention it ... I am wondering too. What did the old Chaos Codex say? There were rules in the Chaos Codex for Warhammer 40,000 written by Andy Chambers on Daemon princes and which chaos factions did not match. IIRC though, it was Slaanesh and Khorne who did not match.

Khorne vs Slaanesh and Tzeentch vs Nurgle have been the oppositional powers for a long time now, as Graver said. However its not like Khorne and Tzeentch get on, Khorne still despises cowardly magic and will guard his warriors against it. Nurgle stole one of the eldar gods away from slaanesh which Im sure caused all manner of bother.

The Chaos Gods all war with each other and will equally ally together at times, even with their hated opppositional power. Its Chaos after all!

The reason for Tzeentch and Nurgle hating each other is because of their core emotions: hope/ambition versus despair/resignation. When something is wrong with your life (not counting listening to the advice of the Ruinous Powers), Tzeentch urges you to change it while Nurgle wants you to accept it.

Khorne and Slaanesh have multiple points of conflict - Slaanesh is the youngest chaos deity while Khorne may or may not be the oldest, Slaanesh is all about the living while Khorne cares more about the ending of life and the Dark Prince emphasizes style and elaborate elegance while the Blood God likes simplicity.

Although I was aware of the rivalries between the Ruinous Gods but what does that say about Chaos undivided? Obviously every Ruinous God has his own particular cult(s) that adheres to their particular values but would they cast their favor on one who would try to appeal to all of them or would other Daemons try to fit the bill?

Also, Daemon Princes, what are they and how do they fit into the hiearchy of Daemons and their assocation with a particular Ruinous God?

Cifer and Graver answered well, but I'll fill in a few things.

While Khorne despises magic, he respects power. Tzeentch has power in abundance.

Fundamentally, Khorne believes in death, Slannesh believes in life - Tzeentch believes in change, Nurgle in decay.

Those that follow Chaos Undivided know that without balance between the opposing forces, stagnation inevitably results - Khorne's chosen would slay until there was nothing left to kill, Slannesh's followers try every vice until they all pale, Tzeentch's cults try to change everything, regularly, even systems that were working just fine, Nurgle's lads just want to have a laugh at the break down of everything, etc.

Daemon Princes are specifically one-time mortals who transcended their flesh. They are "successful" Chaos Champions who were rewarded with daemonhood.

Excellent, thank you for the response, now I have sufficent brain candy to use against my players.
