Hi gang!
My name is Syphon, and I am an avid fan of the Cthulhu mythos. As such, I've obviously got the CoC RPGs, played Dark Corners of the Earth on my PC and have played Arkham Horror more times than I can remember. Since I want to do something memorable for my first post, here comes a story I wrote fighting Cthulhu in my first solo game of Arkham Horror. It features ... well, you'll see. Enjoy!
Only moments before, the few brave souls with the insight to see what was coming had been in various strange dimensions, fighting their own battles. They knew of the others fighting on their side, but never had been in contact much. There was Marie Lebeau, the beautiful entertainer, who was well versed in the more obscure arts, though less so after she suffered an injury in her race against the clock. Following the same path as she did was the musician Jim Culver, famous for his golden trumpet heirloom and his uncanny ability to blindside any undead creature. Lastly, there was Rex Murphy, the seemingly clumsy reporter, who in actuality came from a cursed family line. Each of them had earned their stripes in fighting back the horrors from beyond our sanity, but the worst was yet to come. When another gate opened in the middle of Arkham’s Independence Square, the earth started to shake. Being the nexus that it was, the Massachusetts town of Arkham was subject to the focusing of alien energies. Soon after, the investigators had been dragged back to the town. They felt relief as they saw one another alive and well, back on Earth as well. However, Cthulhu had awoken and loomed closer.. “So…it’s come to this” Jim spoke, looking at the monstrosity heading their way. It was quite some distance away, but already the investigators felt their resolve weaken. “It has” sighed Rex, ready to fight but sure his curse would be the death of him.
The singer only looked at the two men at her side, making the most of the time that it would take Cthulhu to notice them.
In what seemed an eternity to Rex, but what was really mere minutes, Cthulhu had pinpointed the source of his opposition. Mere mortals who had caused him so much trouble, they would be the first to die. The three investigators looked up, with Rex muttering a prayer, Marie tightening her grip on the knife she carried with her, and Jim raising his trumpet to his lips. And so, the battle began.
Striking first, the beast surged forward with a burst of speed. However, instead of attacking physically, it emitted a sound that was unlike anything the investigators ever heard, even during their sojourns to strange planes of existence. They felt themselves weakening as their minds seemed to bleed, groaning as they underwent their fate. But when it seemed to be too much for them, Cthulhu stopped. “Now’s our chance!” Rex shouted. Jim, however, held him back. “Not yet…wait for it…” he said. And Rex saw Jim was right. The creature before them seemed to shudder, possibly still weak from slumbering for so long. Feeling strengthened by the fact that the Dread Cthulhu seemed to be struggling, they attacked.
Nimblest of the trio, Marie slashed at the creature, cutting deep but doing little actual damage.
Then came Jim, who struck a blow with his brass knuckles. Again, it failed to do any consequential damage. Last came Rex, who rang his Chime of Ra before attacking with his strange device, gained from his voyages. The massive creature shuddered but otherwise remained unfazed. Again, the creature attacked. The group was almost ready to attack when it did, but caught off guard it tore into the group with its mind. They found themselves reeling from the psychic blow, as if pages from the book of their memories were torn out. Yet, they rallied and tried again. Marie missed, as Cthulhu brought a tentacle about, not hurting her but stopping her dead in her tracks. Likewise, Jim was stopped from harming the dreadful creature. Then, Rex tried to attack but found himself unable to, shaking too much to handle his weapon. Seeing his chance to strike, Cthulhu once more attacked, its many tentacles lashing out in an attack on the mind. The investigators had no choice but to submit, finding comfort in the fact that Cthulhu could not keep this up long. When the attack had gone, the investigators braced themselves. There was no telling what the creature would do next…
Leaning down to the level of the investigators, Cthulhu quickly grasped them with his tentacles and bore them towards it mouth. The mortals had to attack quickly, or they’d be done for. Crying out for a concerted effort, Marie brought her enchanted blade to bear.
Again, however, she failed to do any damage, not even connecting with Cthulhu. Her blade swung right past every time she slashed at the monster. Jim quickly punched the creature with his brass knuckles in desperation, and to his amazement, it did damage. The tentacle holding Jim began to bleed, and he was sure that he could get loose. In the mean time, Rex attacked as well but never inflicted any damage, foiled again by his family curse. The maw was steadily looming closer. However, in a show of bizarrely warped fate, Rex wrestled free with the strength of a madman, falling to the ground. The others were not so lucky. Jim and Marie were eaten alive by the foul creature, their cries echoing in Rex’s mind as well as in his ears.
“You won’t get me too!” he cried, shaking with rage now. While Rex stood still, furious but not acting, the creature shot forward to attack before he was ready with a crackle of energy. Rex cried in pain as he was hit, feeling the now familiar sensation of his brain being squeezed down upon. In return, Rex felt a surge of energy but with his spells ripped from his memory before, he had nothing to cast. Regardless, he swung at the monster. Yet again, he was foiled by his curse and missed. Then, he came up with one last idea. He knew the plan was wild and reckless, but what else could he do? The battle was hopeless anyway. He attacked, bringing the device he had stolen from a temple what seemed so long ago over his head in an arc, smashing it on Cthulhu. It did nothing. With contemptuous ease, the Dread Cthulhu picked up Rex and devoured him, as easily as he had done with Jim and Marie. It was all over.
Arkham was subjected to Cthulhu’s whims and soon all the other Great Old Ones would find their way to Earth, leaving it in shambles for millions of years to come…
