Escort

By Voloch, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi

Sorry, but I simply don't understand the wording on "Escort".

Please, someone describe it to me without just repeating what the booklet says.

Cheers

Until the fighter expansions come it it won't be of any use.

Basically if you have a squadron without the Escort ability (e.g. Y-Wing) engaged with an enemy squad (e.g. TIE), and you also have a squad with the Escort ability (e.g. X-Wing) engaged with that same enemy, the enemy can only shoot the squadron with the Escort ability (e.g. the TIE cannot shoot the Y-Wing, it can only shoot the X-Wing). This does not apply to Counter attacks though (which some of the new fighters will have).

I really like the way they have thought about the fighters aspect of this game.

It makes it imperative that you escort your bombers. Just need my bombers now! :)

When you explain it that way, it suddently makes sense :)

Thanks.

Well, they're on on the boat :D

So the bombers cannot be shot at, but are the still considered "engaged"? Or can they move off while the X-Wings and TIEs go at it?

As I understand - now - is that the Escort providies a screening for the bombers (non-Escorts), so you HAVE to target the Escorts and eliminate them before you shoot at others in same engagement. And the bombers are still considered engaged but cannot be shot at. Otherwise you have to engage non-Escorts out of engage-range of the Escorts if you want to shoot at them.

ok my question is do you HAVE to escort.

say you there is some a wings close enough to get escorted and you want the A wings to get attacked first so you can counter?

Yes. Its not particularly sensible to use X's to escort A's. Seperate them out and attack different enemy units.

Preferably, you don't want your A-Wings to be attacked in general. If you want another ship to throw in combat, go for X-Wings. A-Wings have lost their ability to dictate the terms of the engagement thanks to Intel.

However, an interesting bit with A-Wings is their black dice for anti-ship and the fact that they can keep up with ships at speed 3. Throwing the A-Wings to attack ships to deal a couple of damage, then get intercepted and countering the enemy with Counter 2 seem like a good strategy.

But for frontline anti fighter/anti-bomber duties, the X-Wings are still king :P
