Bounty Hunters getting a bounty

By RusakRakesh, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Disclaimer- I am sure this will get into the Bounty Hunter Book :P

Also, inspired by this facebook thread- https://www.facebook.com/groups/370595006481881/permalink/397945947080120/

So, how do you do it in your game? if you have a character who is a bounty hunter, or a group that are into bounty hunting, how do they search for available bounties?

Just to start this off, here is my example-
I have a player who is a bounty hunter for the Sector Rangers. He has a data pad which connects to the local broadcasting system, or a hyperspace transceiver. He scrolls between targets and info on them.
Mechanically, he throws Knowledge Underworld or Streetwise, and mechanically speaking the Sector Rangers have their own imperial hyperspace transceivers and local cells who broadcast this news about criminals. This will work for bounty hunter guilds as well.

To make it interesting and harder >:-) for him, he has to connect to a localized port, for example in a spaceport, to a data kiosk or their own transceiver on their spaceship. Usually localy he gets info on bounties on a system wide scale or grouping of systems, which are usually local menace like gangs or pirates. On the hyperspace communication he might get sector wide menace, which are usually bigger targets with wide range of description, like "any member of this big underworld organization".

Obviously, the disadvantage of an unaffiliated bounty hunter is manually searching for available bounties, or working on retainer with some underworld boss, who occasionally sends of a bounty.

Carousing, streetwise and even know (underworld) can all at least provide leads to either finding bounty posting, and also be helpful in tracking down bounties in urban/civilised areas.

Computers can be used if you've sliced into some surveillance system to track and search by facial/voice recognition, but is also harder and requires more skill and equipment. And isn't technically legal I'd think :) Of course coercion, charm, deception and negotiate be used to get the same information from a slicer or employee of some surveillance service provider.

If you're with a guild, law enforcement agency, the Empire or some crime syndicate, finding bounties wouldn't necessarily require checks, but could be given as missions, side-missions and just be posted on a wall at the syndicate's HQ...

That's about what I said :)

Was hoping for more sharing, less tips...

It depends on the posting of the bounty: Legal or illegal.

Legal bounties can be posted by the administration for things like commiting crimes, skipping on bail etc, companies put them out for pirates/con artists, ...

Unlicensed Bounty Hunters only get half the listed reward to discourage amateurs.

Illegal ones get issued by crime syndicates or private parties/persons and usually want someone dead for something he/she did (not) do.

In your case it seems that your players only deal with legal bounties.

For personal stories:

My players have a certain distaste for slavers and pirates. In order to get closer to their targets they rely on Knowledge (Underworld), Charm, Coercion, Cool, Negotiation, Skullduggery and Streetwise. Their problem is that when they start to hit several (in this case 10) people of influence the Underworld will react most likely with a bounty on them. They do disturb the business dealings of (small) powerplayers of the Outer Rim.

Also it seems like some places will have a local "Bounty board," I seem to recall Ventress pulling some bounties off a terminal on Tatooine.

Since "Bounty Hunter" is a pretty broad term in the Star Wars universe, often covering hunters, mercs, hired guns, hired goons, and security contractor types, I'd also go with a holonet show akin to "Big Shot" from Cowboy Bebop. Something kinda campy that can be used to drop plot hooks or narrate the foundation of an adventure.

Given that people post bounties with the intention of having them filled, (a secret bounty has no point) one can assume they're easy to find out about. Local boards, a kiosk at the Police Station, and the guild itself are all easy and good sources of what bounties are available at the moment.

Sounds great, but still sound like a story to get to the character story. You can make a long story out of finding blue milk but what it really be fun? Or would our 4 hour session be more fun provided that the Blue milk was poison and as you order it and drink it you are at the mercy of the guy who bought it for you. That jerk set you up with a poison that only he has the antidote. Now you are working for him. I like the op idea if the group is mostly bounty hunters.

I use bounty boards in local cantinas when PCs are in the Outer Rim (like Ventress did in the Clone Wars). If they're on a civilized world, they will have Bounty Hunter Guilds they can go to if guilded, or local police stations if they're Licensed Imperial Peacekeepers.

If they're both, like my group's bounty hunter is, then the Guilds considers them "sellout scum" if they catch wind that he's also carrying an Imperial Peacekeeping Certificate, and proceed to interfere with their hunts.
