Vigilant Bara

By jugglingfool2, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

The search function here is very bad so I appologize if this has been asked before.

I am very interested in the vigilant Bara deck. I have tried Tzumain but a lot of the decks there use older cards from before the LCG and I am only playing with the LCG cards. People mention that vigilant is a good build for Bara but I don't seem to understand or know where to get the cards that make it a vigilant deck. My buddy and I are splitting chapter packs and have several btu I am still not seeing what would make a bara deck a vigilant deck.

THe bannermen charecter seems like an integral part, but is there something more to it than that.

Lightbringer has the key word vigilant but that is the attachment not the charecter.

What cards should I look for or where should I look for more vigilant people for Bara?

The other card is Vigilant Stag from the Change of Seasons Chapter pack. Between it and the Bannerman, that is how you will bestow Vigilant upon your characters.

Fiery Followers, Royal Guard and House FLorent Scouts are three character who themselves have vigilant. (Sacred Bonds and War of the Five Kigns Chapter packs)

great question btw.

Another card that you could look at, though it doesn't hav the vigilant keyword, is Distinct Mastery from the core set. It lets you choose and stand a charcater with a crest (icon in the bottom right of the card) and bara has at least 9 characters with crests (and 3 of those you can hae 3x in your deck). This is good in addition to and in combonation w/ vigialant. It allows you to stand on defense or with a character who does not have vigilan yet. It combos with it by allowing you to kneel a couple of strong characters w/ crests to win the power challenge to attach bannermen and then use distinct mastery to stand them.

In the same vien of helping but not being vigilant is To be a Stag (Sacred Bonds), once you play your Fury of the stag (Ancient Enemies) plot this card allows you to stand a baratheon character, and in addition you can then search your discard pile for and return a baratheon character there w/ lower STR then the character you stood and return it to your hand. While this effect seems to do more, the card only works as early as turn two (because the plot would not be in your used plot pile until then, even if revealed on turn 1) and forces you to play the plot early (not necessarily a bad thing, but i like the flexibilty of waiting till i'm ready for it, especially if i have king renly out).

Also, Core Set renly has defacto vigilant and has some advantages over King Renly (The Raven's Song). And if you are running Vigilant Stag, you are going to be relying on influence anyway (the mechinism that Core Set Renly works off of).

Of those three, I prefer Florent Scouts. I like my first challenge to be intrigue and i like his cost to stat ratio. Fiery Followers has been too expensive for me so far, but they are a Tricon and has a holy crest so there are pluses. For me Royal Guard is not a baratheon card. Standing a 1 Str character every attack is nice, but not as nice as vigilant could be. Plus, stalwart really doesn't gain you anything in baratheon and they don't really need to be returning cards to the top of their deck.

I was messing around the other day with a Bara deck that used the Abandoned Forge to go get Icy Catapaults, then put the catapaults on the Royal Guards (As well and Jeyne and the Scavengers who I ran out of house). Then I used Prosperity and Plenty to bring the Catapaults back. It probably needs a few more Stark characters to make it reliable.

Bannermen are great, there is an event too that gives Vigilant until the end of the phase.

My favorite is the Vigilant character that gains Renown in Power challenges.

Ser Axel Florent can untap quite frequently too.

If you play a Vigilant deck, try to have the Initiative a lot, so you can attack & defend. You can use Overzealous Scout (+4 Init. and an Intrigue icon make it good). Fox's Teeth is great when you have Initiative too.

Duh! Arena Knight is the Cards name and its in The Refugees of war (i think) pack. great card, more for rush decks though (which vigilant doens't have to be).

would den of wolves work there as well? When you have a good run, finish them off with an extra challenge phase.

I just started tinkering with a Bara rush deck that uses alot of standing effects. It basically uses the cards that other people have been talking about except Distinct Mastery (I don't think I run enough crested characters, but there are enough out there) and the Robert, which I think is an auto-include. But the function of a Vigilant deck seems to be using events to make your good characters Vigilant as opposed to playing all the Vigilant characters printed.

So my advice would be to play the good vigilant characters (Arena Knight, Florent Scouts) as well as Renly and Robert so you have built in Vigilance and then fill the rest of the slots with just good characters that you can make vigilant if you want to. That's basically the shell I used and in the one game I've played with the deck I had thirteen power by turn two, so it can't be a terrible starting point.

I think if you pack in Fiery Followers and other expensive Vigilant characters it will be too clunky so rely on a core of 8-10 characters that can stand themselves and then play some odd number of Vigilant Stags and Banners to get your other powerhouse characters Vigilant. Also, Royal Entourage is nuts.

I would add Eric Storm first, an extra body, stealth and an extra power challenge when you need one.
