Upgrade Card Critical Hits (Assault Missiles)

By Cuthawolf, in Star Wars: Armada

Heya,

So the question came up today about whether or not a critical hit is "spent" to trigger the effect on Assault Missiles, thus losing the extra point of damage. I know you can't apply more than one critical hit effect at once, but if using a critical result on a die for Assault Missiles, does it still do a point of damage?

TL:DR: Do Assault Missiles hit the target hull and the two adjacent hull zones for 1? Or do they only the adjacent zones and not the one you targeted for damage?

From the FFG article: Star Destroyers!

"For example, the Victory I can equip the Assault Concussion Missiles upgrade. Then, whenever your attack includes a swm01_crit_hit_black.png result on a black attack die, you can deal one point of damage to each hull zone adjacent to the defending hull zone. You can only trigger one critical effect per attack, so if you trigger the effect from your Assault Concussion Missiles, you won’t deal a faceup damage card to the enemy ship; of course, the exchange is that you will deal an extra two points of damage."

I believe you do three damage as well. One to the primary hull attacked, and one to each adjacent zone :)

That's how we read it also. Trade the face up damage card for the damage to the defending hull zone and the adjacent ones.

So along the same vein, would that mean Overload Pulse would also contribute a base point of damage as well as flipping all the tokens?

Yes, it will still deal it's one point of damage.

Critical damage is a damage point, it just has associated rules to go with it. So every instance critical damage is dealt, regardless of its effect, it is still a damage point.

AHA! There's what I was most looking for, thank you very much. Appreciate all you guys answering my Nub questions :P

No such thing as a noob question...

Just aspiring pro questions...

glad I could help :D

Ah, geez, I was under the impression that the critical effects fell under the "Cost:Effect" template, with the Cost being spent. There are some effects in the game that involve spending dice already, too, which further cemented my incorrect understanding. The two games I've played so far would have been much, much different.

Having to spend a critical die to flip a damage faceup, or to activate Overload Pulse/Assault Missiles makes it like a different game.

This sums it up nicely :)
