Greetings all I will make this post short and to the point. I am a low vision person that enjoys high quality board games but one of the downfalls of having low vision is that we are restricted to the classic board games like chess, checkers, monopoly, etc.. I wish to fix this problem. While the rest of the world has developed great board games the niche market of the low vision individual has stayed in the stone age of board gaming. My plan here is to gather all of you for a bit of a brainstorming conference in this post. I am aware of most of the challenges that come with porting the game into a format that a blind or low vision player can access so instead of focusing on what we can not do lets focus on ideas to make adaptations that remain faithful to the source material.
[Project] Talisman 4th Edition Revised - Low Vision Edition
I have 1 idea, but it would remove the theme. Just draw random numbers from bags. 2 bags, 1 for Strength enemies and one for Craft enemies.
I have no experience with this issue not sure how much vision is needed. But you could even put those plastic numbers that little kids use on Refrigerators. Get a few sets for each bag.
Not sure if this is a valid idea, just trying to help.
I have experience in developing accessible websites. I would think that all changes would have to happen from the roots up, but could be done in-house with patience and the right tools and resources. Taking that experience, and applying it to the game, here are some thoughts:
1. Simplify the artwork on the board to a relatively plain canvas with minimal graphics to distract the eye.
2. Remove all game text on the board, and replace with large corresponding numbers that reference to a gameboard booklet
3. Design this booklet with very large, high contrasting fonts and diagrams.
4. Remove all text on the cards, replacing with coded numbers. Add this text to the booklet as well.
5. Larger dice, with high contrasting colour.
6. Be aware and modify any instances where colour is a defining guide: For instance: Light and dark fate, the colour of the dragons and tokens, Strength, Craft and Life tokens, etc. These would all have to be reworked graphically to show the difference, rather than by colour.
I think this game would need a big underaking for the visually impared, but it could be done for sure.
